Bravo. Yes, there is something about this performance that you don't get with Dimash. Don't get me wrong, I learned of this performance through Dimash, but the pronunciation is authentic and the timing is original, especially 5:29. Daniel transitions lower sooner, which, when played all the way through, is truly beautiful. I've waited over a year to see a reaction to Daniel because no one thought to do one, and I stopped looking. So, I'm glad I found your reaction. What a coincidence.

The song is about a guy waiting for death because the love of his life (his only reason for living) just died in his arms, I feel this despair in Balavoine’s version. Dimash's version is more a performance to show his great abilities in a song contest. I prefer the original but everyone has their own sensitivity.

You may think the way he sang is modest (i take it as a compliment), Daniel feels every words of the lyrics wich is heartbreaking... not everyone or professional singers can sing this difficult song properly like him, please try it by yourself at home (he he ;-)). Not anyone could sing or is trained like Dimash, he is the best performer of SOS but for us who can really understand french we can't hold our tears when Daniel sings.

There are a few interpretations of SOS, but it’s true that nothing is like the original. It is inspiring to note that Dimash didn’t try to steal the songs, but interpreted them in a way that honoured the originals. Whenever I have heard Dimash cover a song, I have sought out the original to appreciate and understand (not compare!) where the song began. Lovely concept for your reactions. Cheers from Canada!

For me, performing a song like this doesn't require breaking records in the highs or lows, but just putting your emotions into it and conveying them. Daniel BALAVOINE knew how to do this, as did Grégory LEMARCHAL, another magnificent French singer. I'm not criticizing "Dimash" because I don't know him particularly well. However, I do admire the South Korean singer - Ko Eun Sung - because I think he interprets French songs very well. But that's my personal point of view.

Before commenting, I listened to the different versions and the different singers and Dimash's vocal performance is fantastic. But, because there is a but. It's yogurt, a random pronunciation of French, no emotion and why no emotion? Because he doesn't understand what he is singing and because in French song the music is certainly important but always less than the words and the stories they tell.

When I first heard Daniel sing it after hearing Dimash's version, it made me cringe so much that I had to turn it off part way through. Gregory Lemarchal's version was easier on the ears and I can see where Dimash got his version from after hearing Gregory's. It's like he took that as the base for his own cover rather than Daniel's version. The interesting thing is, both Daniel and Gregory died young - Daniel in the helicopter accident and Gregory from Cystic Fibrosis (but he won a big singing competition with this song before he passed away). Dimash seems to be attracted to songs that speak of loss and human tragedy, and this is certainly one of them. Not only is it sung on stage over the dead body of the hero's girlfriend, but two of the singers themselves died in tragic circumstances. Other examples are Sinful Passion (the lead guitarist of A' Studio was killed in a car accident) and Daybreak (the parents died saving their child). I'm enjoying this journey of originals that Dimash later covers. Great idea to do this. Kudos to the person who requested them, great job!

This song is about the deep inability of a man to find the meaning of life. The lyrics are tear-jerking. It’a all about human freaking fragility. In that way Dimash’s version, with its assurance and strong notes, is a misinterpretation and a total nonsense to me. Balavoine was this pure soul to convey the proper emotion of this song.

Phil, this original song was part of a rock opera, so it was sung in that context. Dimash’s rendition would not sound right in a rock opera. I love that Daniel’s French is perfect. Dimash’s French leaves a lot to be desired (I am French), so it is nice to have the language to back up the song. I suggest you also listen to Gregory Lemarchal’s rendition of it. He won a French contest with it and went on to perform it to large audiences. He suffered from cystic fibrosis and I still can’t fathom how he had enough breath to sing this song. Gregory also died young, at 23 I believe, waiting for a lung transplant for his cystic fibrosis. I would like to also suggest a very beautiful song sung as a duet with Lara Fabian; it is called “An Ave Maria”, here is the link; kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmjJkoivqLlpZrcsi=2YEw_Vl6w3pSzx8V Thanks for this journey, very interesting!

Yes, an original interpretation will always have an incomparable flavor and I think that it will always be less meritorious to cover it up by improving it because the flavor will never be the same. Know that Daniel Balavoine has an even more fantastic song than this one and it is called "Tous Les Cris les SOS" and I am very surprised that Dimash did not cover it because he would have an even greater success with this one. I don't think anyone will be able to recreate the unique atmosphere of the original by Daniel Balavoine even though I know that Dimash is an exceptional singer.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpiZc6KhqsSVh8U

Daniel Belavione was a very special singer, he gave his heart in every single performance. I have enjoyed more than 25 videos of different performances by Dimash singing this song always live. I would NOT want to start a debate, but it's natural that all Dears feel affected and tend to compare any version of "SOS de un terrien en détresse" with Dimash's. That is inevitable, that song is the one that opened the doors to his magical world to the majority of his followers. It goes without saying that no matter how good and emotional the previous or subsequent versions are since its premiere at Starmania, above all the versions by Belavione and Lemarchal, the song acquired a much superior connotation in Dimash's unique voice. That song IS already Dimash's, no one can take it away from him. When Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon composed it, they did not imagine that 18 years later its true owner would be born in Kazakhstan.

I agree with you. Dimash's performance is outstanding and I've listened to it hundreds of times, but the authenticity and the obviously natural French sang by Daniel is also beautiful.

Ok here is my view as a French native Dear :) I absolutely love Dimash's versions of SOS, except the Singer version because he absolutely murders the language in that one as I think he was nervous, but all other versions are just amazing. Daniel's version is also beautiful because as you so rightly say he is so totally absorbed in his performance and it is very emotional too. It was composed in 1978 for a rock opera so obviously it is impossible to compare it to today's style and DImash. You can't compare apples and oranges! They are both beautiful. Daniel is more in the emotion, Dimash is more powerful, obviously has a better voice and his emotions are beautiful too in a different way. I think Daniel's range is good too as although he doesn't go as high as Dimash he definitely has range and his technique is very different. I remember the first time I heard Daniel sing SOS many years ago and we were all amazed by the range in one line! There are many singers who have attempted to sing this song, some better than others and it would be really interesting to react to a few other ones too! Thank you Fil! ;)

Greatings, my friend 🤗 I loved your face expressions while listening 😅👌 I respect the original version, but... light years away from Dimash's, right? 😉 What Dimash touches and sings, he makes it his own, and with a gold cover ✨️ As always, a great reaction! 🫶 Kisses from Portugal, my dear 😘🇵🇹

When you hear a cover by Dimash of a song that is not in your native langage, i can understand that you are impressed. When the song is in your own native langage, things are differents. The langage, the way it sounds, proprerly pronounced, and thus the way the lyrics are given, convey the emotion. The "performance" is not a question of pure technique. That is why, although his technique, i think that Dimash rendition of SOS d'un Terrien en Détresse is not so impressive to my hears.

to my french hearing ears, he sounds like he's vibing in the airs, so light in this performance. It's ironic bc he died in a helicopter crash (the pilot was a known Swiss pilot, and a lot of things were named after him. (His dad founded Air-glacier)

If you grew up with this song or understands french, you see Dimash actually fumbles this song. Dimash turns the song to fit his voices capabilities. But in doing so he fails to convey he’s supposed to be a guy considering suicide.

How could you possibly think Damesh sang this song better than Balavoine? 1/ the song was literally composed for Balavoine (according to his vocal capabilities) 2/ Balavoine actually understands the lyrics and incarnates them with his voice and facial emotions 3/ Damesh is - to me - just an average good singer technically

YOu would appreciate even more the authenticity if you understood the lyrics . You can deliver more emotion when you know the words and their meaning ( Dimash does not, you can barely recognize it's french in his version)

I remember he was vers anxious before singing, he didn't sing it since several years, and didn't have a lot of time for preparing himself for the tv show. He wasn't realy happy about the result in the end I remember.

Everyone (or almost!) knows that “SOS d'un terrien en détresse” is a song from the musical STARMANIA, created in 1979. The story told in this show has not aged a bit, it is timeless , this is why its success spans the decades with many new versions over the years.

The vocal performance is not at all in the tradition of French song from France, which is more based on interpretation in the sense of the emotion released (Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel - who was Belgian -, Barbara... ). This notion of vocal performance arrived late in France via Quebec artists from Canada (Ginette Reno, Céline Dion, Lara Fabian...), it is more of a North American tradition. Incidentally, this song comes from a 1979 Franco-Quebec rock opera "Starmania" and was made possible thanks to the vocal abilities of Daniel Balavoine, but was not at all the initially most famous song of this rock opera. It was as part of a reality TV singing competition that a young singer (unfortunately he also died very prematurely), Grégory Lemarchal, covered this song from the perspective of vocal performance in the 2000's. And it was Grégory Lemarchal's version that inspired Dimash Kudaibergen for his own performance in a televised singing competition on Chinese television.

I was 4 when Daniel Balavoine died. Still, he is my #2 favorite singer, just after another great french artist, Jean-Jacques Goldman. When I discovered Dimash's version, and I'm sorry if I'm wrong, I felt like it was someone that has indeed a beautiful voice and could do amazing things with it, push it to even higher summits than Balavoine did, but just doesn't understand what he is singing, and was covering songs that can sublimate his voice just to get famous. Ni être heureux" which you can translate to "Little smartasses, singers of tomorrow on great choruses from yesterday. Stealing a bag, even to an old guy, it's nothing to be proud of. Nor happy about". So the only thing beside the quality of his voice, I can give to Dimash, is that he helped people around the world to discover the great person that was Daniel Balavoine. Thanks to reactions like this one, and to comments below them that can help to know all that he has done beside singing. One of the biggest being the instigator of a program to implant water pumps in/near villages in Sahara desert. This program was the reason he was in that helicopter that crashes in the desert. So we can say that this man literally gave his life to help people. I don't think Dimash would ever beat that.
