This is such a memorable, elegant and pared down tune. Perfect for experimenting. I’m tempted to see if I can perform the melody in other modes too. Fantastically clear upload. Thank you so much.

Sincere thanks Jared, iconic piece from a pivotal album. I once figured it out partially years ago but not to any degree of accuracy. So it fell by the wayside. Appreciate the nudge to revisit So What. Probably the coolest name for a hip tune ever, BTW!

Curious about your Tele pickups, strings gauge, pick gauge etc.
@soundguitar6 күн бұрын
Happy to share: My tele is a 2011 American Standard Telecaster with the stock fender pickups. I almost always play jazz with a Dunlop Jazz II pick. My strings are 10s - D'Addario EXL110.

Thank you for the great lesson. Are you using a specific app or website for the backing track when you're playing or did you record it yourself?

Thanks! Yeah, the app is called iReal Pro. I made a video on it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ3beYxon7SJias

Naive question: Is the Dorian Mode in the key of C (where D is the new "root" of the mode) called "C Dorian" or is it called "D Dorian"? Same question would apply to all the other modes, for example, "C Mixolydian" or "G Mixolydian"? Does the major scale that the mode comes from (in the key of C in this example) assigned to the name of the mode ("C Dorian)" or is the new "root" of the chosen mode assigned to the name of the mode ("D Dorian")? Thanks!
@soundguitar6 күн бұрын
Good question! It's the second option you described. So "D dorian" is the name even though it comes from the key of C. And the 5th mode would be "G mixolydian." The idea is that the mode has a root and structure of its own - so you can study and play with a mode without even needing to know it's connected to a major scale or what the major scale root is.

@@soundguitar Thanks, Jared. So if the song I'm playing is in the key of F, and I am told to use the G Dorian mode for my solo, I would just start on the second note of the F scale and play all the notes in the F major scale with the G as my tonal center (and the relative fretboard positions of those notes would be the same as the relative positions of the notes of the D Dorian scale in the key of C). It's all pretty clear if that's the case! Thanks again!

Jared at 3:20 and 5:00 you imply that learning the name of the scale that we use here is hard or not important. I believe it is crucial to know the name of any scale you are learning or you wont remember it. Naming things is always where you begin in learning about anything. Further more it is not hard - learning a name is much easier than the task at hand - playing a jazz tune on the guitar. I just can't picture the person who is interested in playing So What but is intimidated or uninterested in the scale/mode name. Just my thoughts. Thank you for another great lesson Jared!

Thanks for the feedback! I have so many lessons on theory and the names of concepts, so for this lesson I was trying to be careful not to overwhelm someone who might find this lesson and just want to actually play the song and get it in their hands. I agree that knowing labels is helpful, but there are many players out there that want to just learn to play something - if I make it sound like it's required that we know the theory of something like "dorian" for a piece like this, then that might discourage some of them. I appreciate your thoughts! Thank you for sharing. :)
