Tha cap on Luna was to protect the founder, not to prevent this from happening. Basically people were buying UST for 0.90, converting it to Luna and then taking 1$ from the founder for the Luna. The founder was losing 10 cents each time. However if he hadn't put a limit, at some point the attacker would have run out of money. But it was a question of who runs out of money first, the attacker or the founder of Luna.

Instead of actually putting up collateral, The idea of the founder was to use these two coins to balance each other and basically pay for the arbitrage out of the founders pocket. This could be sustained if the founder had deep pockets arbitrage was smaller than the profit generated from investing the actual USD, which was extremely unlikely given the 20% interest he had promised on the USD. It was a Ponzi scheme, like many other cryptocurrencies.

This seems extremely bad for the crypto world and its adoption. Especially in a country like India where the govt is not the most crypto friendly. As a country where the vast majority(90%?) of people don't earn over 25K rupees a month, it's devastating. Ever since i learnt about the mechanics of the scam I've only been more horrified.
