- The sims have no personality (no autonomy, no wants to drive your own imagination, traits do nothing). - Enemies don't really exist. No matter what you do, other sims will like you. - Lack of unpredictability. Fires are rare and easy to fix, death is uncommon, losing relationships is impossible, kids can stay home alone. - There are only two life stages: toddler and adult. Children were an obvious afterthought, and teens don't even exist - they're just slightly skinnier adults. - The ability to change aspirations makes it so every sim does the same things in the same order to hit the easiest milestones. - The aspirations are mostly just tutorials for certain types of gameplay (usually a pack, career, or skill), and the milestones lock you into completing the same tasks in the same order every time. - The AI for townies is so bad that it's immersion-breaking. They don't act like people. - The emotions are an exploitable gimmick, so the game is mostly basic emotion management. - Climbing the ranks of a career is far too easy. Basically, the issue is that the sims have no personality or goals, and everything that happens is completely and effortlessly within your control at all times.

Sims 2 is the best game in the franchise just for the gameplay aspect. Sims 2 didn’t need an open world and a bunch of silly emotions to make it good. The love, detail, and dedication that went into the game is what made it be such an exciting game to play. You never knew what was going to happen. There were actually challenges to achieving your goals. Relationships actually felt meaningful. Its sad what the sims has turned into.
@Blackdaisies3 жыл бұрын
I loved the Sims 3, honestly. With Sims 4 build and CAS tools, Sims 3 would be the perfect Sims game, IMO. My big problem with it is that it runs badly, and despite the open world, community lots were hardly ever populated. I'd take a Sim to a club, and maybe there was one other Sim there. Also I wasn't a big fan of how the non-modded Sims looked and how they were animated.
@micahcook24083 жыл бұрын
Yeah EA needed to optimize it. Which they kind of did for the upcoming 64 bit version of Sims 3.
@filipeeeeeeeee56153 жыл бұрын
Actually the empty lots are supposed to have people there, when your sim goes to a lot and stays there for while, other sims in the town are directed to go to that lot by the game. However, if you ever playing the sims 3 in low to medium-end pc you know how long it takes to other sims to do stuff, they even take time to change their clothes. Take a look at the university graduation at the stadium, the sims stand there all wanting to enter the rabbithole but they have to change clothes first and with all of them wanting to do the same it overwhelms the game and it lags, a lot. But like I said that happens with a low-end pc, because these actions have to do with the processing power of your computer. I used to play the sims 3 on my laptop some years ago, but then I changed to a really good desktop with lots o processing power, and it made HUGE difference, when I send my sims to a club for exemple, other sims do manage to go there, sometimes depending on the log I get more then 10 sims there (which in my old computer would never happen). Although this feature is in the game, it’s not noticeable unless you have a very powerful computer, and if otherwise you’ll get empty lots, which is unfair.
@llondriga3 жыл бұрын
I wonder if a mix between the neighborhoods from Sims 4 and open world from Sims 3 would be that sweet spot where you can move around without lagging. It annoys me so much when my sim lives next to a park, you can see every plant and bench but it looks empty and you can’t put a foot on it without a loading screen 🤦🏻♀️

The sims 2 had 39 lifetime wants(LTW), which corresponded with the aspirations. So for example a sim with a family aspiration could have a LTW of marrying off 6 children, or of having a golden anniversary etc. Sims with Romance aspiration were inclined to have a LTW of woohooing with 20 different sims and so on. As for the attraction system, turn-ons and turn-offs were not the only factor. Interest point, zodiac signs and aspirations were also taken into account. This also gave a player this element of surprise, where you could never be sure, which sims your sim would find attractive. Every extreme of the personality points would unlock hidden automatic interactions, that couldn't be accessed otherwise. For example, very neat sims would automatically clean their windows, where as extremely sloppy sims could rummage through their own and their neighbors' trash and eat food out of it. Extremely grouchy sims would steal you paper or kick over your trash can, just for fun 😂 Sims 2 also had favorite foods assigned for each sim, but this was kinda hidden. The only way to find out what food is their favorite, would be to send them to the restaurant and see their thought bubble when they were ready to order. If you were to choose "Chef's choice", every sim at the table would get the food they had in their respective thought bubbles. Anyways, sorry for the rant. I really enjoyed your analysis and will be watching the next part also x

One thing I will say that wasn’t mentioned here is that Sims 2 had lifetime wants like the sims 3; it is kind of hidden in the UI, you can’t pick your sims lifetime wish without a whole process of cheats and doesn’t affect the wants/fears like the general aspirations do, but these specific lifetime goals are still there! Overall this such a well-thought out, insightful and fantastic video that covers so many perspectives that the players have of the franchise that is able to go in depth on the pros and cons of each of the first 3 games without exhibiting a blatant bias toward any particular one. This game has lost the spirit from it's original counterparts. The sims was originally an architecture simulator, and sims weren't even part of the experience. But Will Wright noticed from a lot of research that architecture has a lot of "function over form" and that architecture molds itself from the people that use it. So Will Wright noticed that the only way for him to make this a full fletched game was if he made actual people to live, use the house, and then mold the house depending on the circumstance. And after that realization, he noticed that the gameplay should be prioritized over the construction of a house. And he used this philosophy through all the games he made and their expansion (sims 1, sims 2, and sims 3 even tho he only made the base game) But the sims 4 is a particular case. This game was made to be a completely different game, a game where you would basically have one main sim that represented you and this sim would meet with different people through an online neighborhood, meaning they had to put an emphasis on making your sims and style stand out. Making this game form over function, something SO DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT TO WHAT THE OTHER SIMS GAMES HAD. And it backfired horribly when they realized that spending all of their time making a game that breaks the sims formula will only make the fanbase mad, specially after the simcity online fiasco. So they literally had to dig for SCRAPS to make this game slightly resemble what the older games were before the release date until... the day came. Lacking gameplay, almost nonexistent depth when it comes to a sim's personality, loss of the spark that this franchise once had, etc. They tried to play with fire, and unfortunately, they burned

You couldn’t play the Sims 2 without interacting and memorizing the stories of the Goth family and the Langgraab’s. You really cared for all of the NPC’s, they weren’t just randomly generated Sims. I remember always wishing I was the popular girl in school, I was a introverted bookwarm, in the Sims you really got to live out your ideal fantasy life. You can still do that in the Sims 4 but you never feel attached to the NPC’s; everything just feels randomly generated even when you see the same NPC’s every single time.

Woow! I loved everything! It is perfect, engaging, nostalgic and magical. It made me realize things that I never really paid attention to in The Sims 2 and 3 before, and how they are still magical. I play them too much today, but a lot more creating and building, so it was wonderful to see your video! Thanks!!

Honestly, I want more like, personality to my sims. I constantly feel like I make the same sims and the same life despite choosing different personality traits and different career/life choices. I always end up going back to sims 1,2, and 3. I never feel content playing sims 4 unless it's loaded with a heck-ton of mods. Like the chaos mod or life's crisis mod or whatever it's called. I feel like there's never anything enough for babies or toddlers honestly. I miss the open world of sims 3. I want like, the babies we had in sims 2, where you could bathe them, had the changing table, could set them out of the crib, get bottles out of the fridge, that kind of stuff. I feel like in some ways, sims 2 and 3 were more realistic than sims 4. In all, I'm highly disappointed with the sims 4, the only reason I have any of the expansion packs is because my friend and I share my origin account and she buys them because she enjoys the sims 4. I bought the base game and some of the extra stuff. But I also miss in cas, getting to make your own hair colors. I miss the freaking color wheel. This is why if they make a sims 5, unless it makes a bunch of improvements, (like not making us pay 40 dollars for an expansion pack that practically adds nothing and if it does add anything, it's something that should've already been in the game anyways) I more than likely won't buy it. That's why I am so excited for Paralives to come out when it does. I feel like it's going to be so much better than Sims 4 or a possible Sims 5.

24:00 What I also want to add is that in TS2 the lifetime wish was randomized, and every aspiration had a selection of a few. In TS3 you could select the lifetime wish yourself, which was the Sim's "identity" that replaced the aspiration. That fact also reinforces what you said about TS3 starting the era of more player control and the "tell your own stories" philosophy. But what it also did was make the lifetime wish more important to the game overall. In TS2 you didn't see the lifetime wish unless you hovered over the aspiration symbol and read the text there, which meant that you weren't exposed to it much. Most Sims probably didn't come close to reaching their lifetime wish, and I didn't even know the lifetime wish of most of my Sims I played, most of the time I forgot looking what it was, or didn't care to. And that wasn't even that important, because your Sims' goal was just to lead a happy life and keeping the aspiration bar high, while trying to make it to the end of their life without dying prematurely. It was also really beneficial if the Sims died with a high aspiration level because it meant they were less likely to come back as a ghost to kill your other Sims. All of this was done by serving the aspiration more than the lifetime wish. That one was more like a helpful side quest because your Sim had infinite golden lifetime status and received a lot of aspiration points which you could buy objects for. In TS3 you can't even leave the CAS for anyone above teens without choosing a lifetime wish. In the base game you had a selection of wishes based on your traits or occult status, but in a later patch they added the option to choose any lifetime wish which furthered your ability to make a unique Sim. But that way the game heavily suggested you should finish the lifetime wish, and because you had only one of these challenges per Sim you were inclined to focus your Sims' efforts towards reaching that goal. You again got a lot of aspiration points too. But there was no aspiration level to be infinitely great or something.

Actually, interests were a thing since the Sims 1. It was later expanded upon by the Hot Date expansion. Interests are randomly assigned and can be influenced by buying magazines (This feature was carried over to Sims 2). Sim 1 chemistry was roughly based around things like your interests and horoscope. If you're having a hard time getting two sims to like each other, their interests didn't align. Sims who have nothing in common have a harder time getting along than two sims who do.

This gives me so much nostalgia. One thing I noticed is how the goth family is the only continuous thing throughout the entire series of the games. There outfits from OG sims are the exact same all the way up to 4 and I wish they had kept much more than that. Also makes me wonder why that specific family is the only continued one throughout the whole series

See, the thing is, I started Sims 4 when I was like 12 because I saw my favorite youtubers at the time playing it and having fun. I never knew any of the other sims games before that (yes I know, sad, right?). So, I started playing the sims 4, and since I had never had anything like that, I thought it was super fun and didn’t know what I was missing with the other 3 games. Now, I’ve bought all the expansion packs for the sims 4 and I’ve put so much time and effort into that game that I think it’s too late to switch to a different game. I’ve gone too deep down the rabbit hole. So... yeah. There’s my sims experience 😕 But I mean... I don’t know what I’m missing so I guess I’m ok with it. 🤷🏻♀️

Very good video and great research. One thing I do remember about The Sims 3 is that favorite colors actually had one thing they did. If you got the actual hex code for the favorite color (Carl's guide has a list) and colored furniture (not sure about wallpaper) using that hex code, they would get the nicely decorated buff. It was something I did all the time when I first started a family to make my sims feel a little better when they only had crappy furniture.

Well done! In the Sims 2 I have found that directing my Sim to do something trains them to be more likely to do this on thier own. They may a times need reminding, however, (at least in my game) they do not require constant direction.

I'm still watching this video (and liking it so far!!) - just wanted to make the observation that the "interests" system was also present in The Sims 1 ☺️ Edit addon- The Sims 2 also had lifetime wishes. I'm not sure when it was added or if it was basegame, but hidden in their aspiration bar was a popup that would give you a more individualised lifetime wish, in theme with the overarching aspiration. For example, a popularity aspiration Sim might have the LTW to have 20 best friends, reach the top of the political career or sports career, etc. Still loving your rundown, can't wait to watch part 2 in a bit!

I learned so much from you, thanks!! Don't get me wrong, I agree with the community that gameplay in sims 4 needs to be improved (WE NEED consequences, relationship depth, etc.) - BUT, it is interesting to discover that architecture played a huge role in the creation of the game in the first place - pointing this out since many ppl complain sims 4 is a building simulator game only lol I mean, if build mode wasn't important, then ppl would be ok with playing the game in a white box! I think build/CAS/gameplay are all equally important and should have equal emphasis - just my opinion :)

Loved the video! Very well done. I especially enjoyed hearing the opinion of someone who entered the series a bit later on. I think there's easily a bit of bias towards people who haven't been around from the beginning, but you did a good job on your research and references. I would like to point out that the personality points in TS1 deserve more credit and actually worked a lot like they do in TS2, where their personalities affect how they interact with things and what they're good at. Active sims build body points more easily but their energy drains more quickly, outgoing sims are better at building charisma, etc. Some extremely low or high points include unique interactions or features that wouldn't be available to others. Interests were also in TS1, and I'm not sure if you missed it but lifetime wants were also a part of TS2 since the first expansion. I'm also not quite sure what you meant about being stuck to the TS2 premades (or townies). Many players played in their own custom neighbourhoods without the premade sims or townies, since the game was designed to support that. When it comes to world-building I think TS2 offers the *most* customization since you have more control over what you want your own town to be like. I certainly hope the devs will look backwards when they create the next game. Something between TS2 and TS3 could be the perfect game!

I grew up on Sims 3 and the past year started playing Sims 2 after getting fed up with Sims 4, and WOW Sims 2 gameplay is amazing. The storytelling and lore is peak in that game, the memory system SHOULD RETURN. Sims 3 recycled a lot of Sims 2 gameplay features and animations, so it holds up well there too. Sims 3 expansion packs are top tier with the amount of content they provide, and they're actually worth their price. With the argument that Sims 3 doesn't work, it does, but not for everyone. Sims 4 is beautiful, and the sims are pretty, and the world is pretty, and the build mode is great, but the gameplay is so DRY it sucks the life out of the player. And when I DO try to give it a chance and play it, it takes a whole sim hour for my sim to brush their teeth. The amount of time my sims waste just standing there before they do the task I tell them to is astronomical, and the amount of glitches and annoyances, the game is BROKEN. Sure, TS4 works for more players, but at what cost to gameplay and content? Conclusion: Sims 5 needs the lore, gameplay, and storytelling functions of Sims 2, the open world and expansion pack content of Sims 3, the building and CAS and prettiness of Sims 4, and MORE because a sequel game should ADD to its predecessors WITHOUT stripping game elements and content amounts and STILL be expected to run nicely because its the NEWEST game, hold them to higher standards or they'll keep disappointing because they know they can get away with it.

I played 1000s of hours over the years and I feel like there are still 1000s of hours worth of gameplay fatures I've yet to try out (especially with all of the expansions). You can spend an entire day playing as a stylist styling Sims in your neighborhood lol Actually, I need to have a a little bit of a plan before I play with a household or else I'm way too overwhelmed with all the choices! As obscene as I generally find EA pricing of Sims DLCs, you get what you pay for if you were to buy a SIms 3 expansion for full price.
