No, only the Zelda of Skyloft was the goddess. The rest are all mortal descendants with particularly strong sealing power. This is why they are named Zelda and why she is called the Princess of Destiny. She's not _THE_ Zelda. Unlike Link and Ganondorf. You could think of all three as representing different types of fate through time. Zelda does not reincarnate in any way, each one is simply someone fated to be the Princess of Destiny. Link is pseudo-reincarnated as the Chosen Hero by inheriting the Hero's Spirit (which is kind of like spiritual essence in Japanese, it doesn't translate well to English). Ganondorf either just plain doesn't die or fully reincarnates as the King of Evil.

Link is unaware he is watching a play with a disguised Ganondorf. Ganondorf begins talking. Did you ever hear the tragedy of Princess Zelda the Wise? I thought not, it's no story the Six Sages would tell you. It's a Gerudo Legend, Princess Zelda was a Hylian Sage of the Light. She was so powerful, yet so wise. She could use the Jars to influence the Fairies to create Hearts. She had such a knowledge of the Light side, she could even keep the ones she cared about from a Game Over. The magic meter is the pathway to many abilities, some consider to be game breaking. Princess Zelda became so powerful that the only thing she feared was losing her power, which eventually of course she did. Unfortunately, she taught her knight everything she knew, then her knight took the bottled fairies to shield surf down a sheer cliff. Ironic, she could save others from Game Over, but not herself from heartbreak. Is it possible to learn this power? Not from any Sage. EDIT: Does this make much sense? I don't know, I thought it was funny to write.

7:32 - speaking of your Princess Zelda Power Ranking vid, as I commented on there, Zelda2’s backstory of every princess of Hyrule having to be named Zelda in memory of the cursed one is a handy way to solve the issue of the Zelda from the Oracle games appearing to be younger than the one in aLttP, despite featuring the same Link; the Oracle Zelda is simply the younger sister of the one in aLttP, and both are named Zelda due to the old law/tradition.
@firionkaiser82916 ай бұрын
It only became an actual law due to the events of the Tragedy of Princess Zelda which happened between Triforce Heroes and Zelda 1. Beforehand it was just a tradition. that started before the events of Minish Cap. Although I'm not certain if said tradition applied to all princesses including siblings. Her being called Zelda the First may imply that several centuries went by to the point where that tradition stopped long enough for the Royal Family to forget. Probably means ALBW Zelda was the last one to be named Zelda until the Sleeping Princess.
@lordofuzkulak83086 ай бұрын
@@firionkaiser8291 unless I’m mistaken, there’s no date given for when she was cursed, meaning that she could easily be from sometime between Skyward Sword and Minish Cap. Even if it was more recent than that, all it needs to happen is between OoT and aLttP and it still fits.
@firionkaiser82916 ай бұрын
@@lordofuzkulak8308 Well it's confirmed that her tragedy still happened after most of the Downfall Timeline events/games (This consists of ALttP's Imprisoning War backstory, ALttP, LA, OoX, ALBW, and TFH) so that includes being after SS-OoT. Her tragedy is one of the main keys that lead to the decline of Hyrule that we see in Zelda 1 and Zelda II, the other being that Hyrule doesn't have the full triforce anymore and the king (Zelda the First's brother) was unfit to use the triforce before hand because of his corrupted heart, eventually becoming a king full of regret. Between SS and Minish Cap doesn't really work due to two reasons. The interloper war mentioned in TP which was confirmed to take place at the end of the Era of Chaos is a pre Hyrule Kingdom Establishment event. OoT Rauru used the remains of the sealed grounds to create the Temple of Time and seal the Triforce within the newly formed Sacred Realm with the Master Sword being the key. Remaining undisturbed until the events of OoT (unless Nintendo decides to reveal new lore later down the line). The second reason being that after TFH, the triforce was used for several generations by each king of Hyrule with a good heart, creating a Golden Age era that would last until the death of the last pure hearted king. His next of kin being his son who he didn't trust with the full triforce and Zelda the First. There wasn't a Hyrule Kingdom prior to the Interloper War and post IW the Triforce is sealed inside the ToT. Between OoT and ALttP doesn't work for similar reasons. This was when the original Imprisoning War took place. Hyrule didn't have the Triforce in their possession as Ganon had the full thing and Hyrule wouldn't gain it back until Link defeated him ALttP. Above all else the whereabouts of the Triforce of Courage being in the Great Palace is what caused her to be cursed in the first place (aside from keeping quiet of course) kinda debunks any other placement aside from after TFH and the Golden Age. Since it was supposed to remain there until Link obtains in Zelda II.

For a while, my personal idea as to why the name is as it is, at least in the context of Breath of the Wild, is that the game is called Legend of Zelda because, although we play as Link, Zelda is the main character that goes through a character arc. It functions as a sort of parallel to the Ghibli film Princess Mononoke, a film that BotW’s creation is most likely inspired by. The film is named Princess Mononoke because the character who goes through the most significant development in the movie isn’t Ashitaka, the character we follow, but rather Mononoke. You can draw parallels between the surface level characters of Link and Zelda with Ashitaka and Mononoke, even though their roles and personalities are very different. BotW isn’t a direct parallel to Princess Mononoke, it’s just inspired by the latter.
@anuwday4 ай бұрын
Yep! This! I don't get why people struggle to comprehend this very simple fact. Although we play as Link, Zelda has always been the driving force of the story whether it be as a ninja, a warrior, or a goddess. Yes, Link is the protagonist, but Zelda is the main character (if that makes sense) which has a fleshed out character and plot. Link has his own story, sure, but it's heavily influenced by Zelda and her role in his life. Mononoke is a great example to explain the naming question! I'd also like to bring up Avatar: The Last Airbender, which has its titular character as the driving force/character arc person while Katara is the one we view the story from (since she's the established narrator) kinda like Link.

Originally Zelda was based on Christianity. Check the original art. Crosses changed to Triforces,Ganon as the devil, monsters as demons,sages as priests, link as a angel, and Zelda as a prophet. All Zelda games are based on Christianity and versions of the bible from this point on(the flood,fall of heaven, twinrova are djinn,ball, Majora's wrath form is literally a biblically accurate Lucifer and vaati is literally a biblically accurate fallen angel. By botw they ditched the christian angle and went with a Shinto angle. Since ghibli movies are the most famous reference to Shinto stories that became the reference. @theoaremevano32276 ай бұрын
I call it a bit of both. Link finds the Master Sword, he fights Ganon, he meets the Hero's Shade, etc. There's always some tie to the old tales, but only some of it is clear. The rest, from his perspective, fits the bill for a 'legend'. Details may simply have been wrong, or embellished, names may have been forgotten, but he can't really be sure. For example, Link in Ocarina of Time didn't know for sure about Headmaster Gaebora in Skyward Sword, he only heard from the Gossip Stones that "rumor has it, the Owl Kaepora Gaebora is the reincarnation of an ancient Sage." The players get to see things differently, but each game is made with the in-world perspective that those old details only 'might' be true. So the 'just a story' aspect is true in-world.

There is only one Legend of Zelda, but it gets retold over the generations, always slightly altered to fit the contemporary culture and worries. It is like the generational changes that happened with the retellings of the King Arthur saga or Robin Hood legend. We know, there was a Chosen Hero, named Link in the most popular historical version and therefor named Link in every retelling since. There is a Holy Maiden. There are Great Sages. There is the return of a Great Evil Conquerer. There is a Legendary Sword with which the Chosen Hero in the end defeats the Great Evil Conquerer. The Chosen Hero will travel between two worlds, the real world and another *(typically, in most versions of the Legend, the Spirit World, but also the World of the Past or the World of the Future). These things are equal in all versions of the tale. These things we hold true, no matter what details the current cultural backdrop set upon it. The Legend of Zelda is a myth, a gospel, a lesson. There will always be a Great Evil trying to take over the world, but as long as Wisdom and Compassion rule the hearts of the people, Good will emerge victorious, securing prosperity for all...until the next time Evil makes a move.

All canon games’ stories (and AoC) are included in it, each chapter being the next game. Love anything you put out zeltik, appreciate all the hard work. I think these short form videos could really help you dive into small interesting tidbits and areas in and outside the games that are super interesting and entertaining but not quite big or extensive or deep enough to fill up a fullscale 20+ minute, plus I just love getting videos more frequently from you so this would be an easy way to crank out a few make some money to keep things going and not have to absolutely break your back on the hour plus videos with tons of editing graphics channel art and all that that I’m sure are very difficult and time consuming to put out. All the best as always!

No one ever asks "Why is it called 'The Lord of the Rings' and not 'Frodo's Journey'?" Lots of things are named after the _goal_ rather than the hero. Zelda isn't unique. "The Wizard of Oz", etc...

I thought of those two titles in particular too...and Nintendo has even done this with their other IP, which is why we have the "Metroid" franchise and not the "Samus Aran" series.

I like the mix of real world history and in universe lore you go into. I also wanted to mention that one of my favorite aspects of Tears of the Kingdom’s story is that because of how far back Zelda goes, and how many of her actions in that time are recorded in stone (or recounted by the ancient sages), Zelda’s story in that game is also somewhat of a Legend itself by the time Link is learning about it. The fact that Zelda’s final fate was something that very few knew (or could even see, since the dragons are apparently not visible to everyone) means that to most of Hyrule, the truth was obscured and the stories they had, which they try to come up with their own translations and interpretations, really were “Legends of Zelda”, which Link had to sift through in order to find out the real truth. There’s aspects of TotK’s story I wish were a little more rounded out but that aspect of another example of an in universe “Legend of Zelda” is something I really enjoyed about the game.

Love the video! I had no clue on the origin of the title. I'd love to see more TOTK videos as well. I know that a lot hate the game, but I enjoyed it and the lore as well. I just saw that somebody on reddit found parts of the triforce on the 3 major dragons in the game, which could have big lore implications. Especially if they're also present in BOTW

I am all for more IRL-focused videos about the series, more interesting to me than theory-crafting and fan speculation. Tell us stories about the people behind the games, why certain choices were made, differences between releases across the world, etc.

I remember when I first played Breath of the Wild, Zelda referencing other games made me think that all this time we haven't really been playing through a "timeline" at all, just different tellings of the same legend that probably didn't happen. That's just the vibe I got. I have no idea what the team had in mind, I just like the stories.

I've always wanted to see a Zeltic upload on A Link to the past! it has always been my favorite game in the series because that ganon wins against Link from Ocarina of time. and is the only game where our hero fights Ganon with the full power of the Triforce.

Loved the video! As complex, at times questionable in sequence, and out of the realms of logic. You have to admire the storytelling and mystical aura this series, and especially its older incarnations give you. It IS an adventure to delve through the series and DOES leave a legendary impact on those that choose to pick up and experience it.

5:56 The CD-i LoZ games also don't use the full "Legend of Zelda:" in their titles. I'm not sure if you don't consider those games to be a part of "the main Zelda series," but personally I do. Those games are as official as officially licensed Nintendo software on mobile.

Old manuals were a treasure. Starflight for Genesis was an amazing manual. IIRC Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday was good too. Fallout 2 was amazing in manual form. Had recipes and a conversion chart for measurements. The old Warcraft II manual had really cool art, Diablo 1 too.

Btw, even though the Zelda are “entirely separate”, it’s still the same Zelda in a different body since the spirit is reincarnated, at least in the same way; also the timeline does not exist. They never confirmed it
@OllieLato3 ай бұрын
In my mind, I like to think that the title being “Legend of Zelda” makes the story feel richer. It already gives your the impression that Link isn’t the main character. He’s a hero, but he’s not the one with the power to seal ganon away.

Awesome video, as per usual! Personally, I think the backstory of the second game is honestly underrated, i always really like the sleeping beauty aspect- not to mention this is the only game where Zelda had siblings, which is really interesting to me I love the idea of getting a few shorter videos in between longer ones! You can't make a single bad video. Curious, would you be willing to return to the Links to the Past series? Your writing is brilliant and I'd love to hear you narrate a few of the smaller stories from the series!

When someone asks this, I usually answer with my own question: Who is the namesake of _every_ fairytale where a guy goes out to rescue a princess? It's always the princess. Or the damsel, when we include Rapunzel and the like. We play as Link, so we don't see into Zelda's life as much in the games, but the story could easily be told with her as the main character, as a fairytale. And she usually is the person most central to the story, too.
