So everybody and their brother gets long sitting vehicles running on KZbin, many guys have made quite a living doing it in fact. What is never covered is what to do after it gets running. In this case this gorgeous survivor truck was sitting in a very dry climate in Montana so pretty much everything rubber on it needs to be replaced. The previous owners brother got it running in Montana but i still have a bunch of stuff to fix on it to make it a driver. My brother bought it and in this video he replaces most of the rubber under the hood. I also go into some background on these power wagons and share a special order paint book for Dodge Trucks from this era. Next step is tires and brakes on it.

Nothing better than a survivor like this! That's probably the most solid sweptline I have ever seen. I had a 69 D100 way back in the early 80s and even then the step boards inside the door were rusted through. One little detail I noticed when Jamie was working on it is that it has the old straight drive starter. If I'm not mistaken, that was because of the old 4 speed trans. I have a 56 Dodge pickup with a 64 or 65 4 speed and it too has the straight drive starter. Not sure when they switched to the gear reduction starter on the trucks with 4 spd, but I also had a 75 W200 4 speed and that had the gear reduction starter. And my 69 D100 was an automatic and that also had the gear reduction starter. And my dad once had a 72 D800 truck with a 413 and it had the straight drive starter. Interesting Mopar truck trivia.

I used to have an early '65 D200 (poly 318, NP435) that still had the 16.5" split rims. Found a truck tire shop that would change them, but very limited and expensive tire choices. It also felt very silly sitting in line with all those massive commercial vehicles, waiting my turn... 🙂 Fast forward to my current '70 Camper Special (LA318, NP435), it's very original with 57K miles but I wasn't willing to deal with the split rims this time so I replaced them with 16" alloys. Pretty much everything else is what it came with. Color-wise, I thought it was medium burnt orange, but when I got paint that was supposed to be that color, it wasn't nearly as red as the original.

Old rubber must have been made better back then, I have seen soo many classic cars with factory belts and hoses that were 40+ years old in great shape where I have seen aftermarket replacements that were totally dry rotted and falling apart with in 2-3 years. Same for suspension bushings and motor mounts the modern rubber doesn't last very long.

@@SE-me2pt tires for everything dry rot like crazy nowadays, I have seen old tires that were stuck in dirt for 20+ years that somehow still held air and have very little dry rot, where I see tires 5years old or less already showing sidewall dry rot and falling apart, the rubber compounds used today just don't seem to hold up to time.

Would love to see your super mopar knowledge in a video explaining parts interchangeability between the models. DDG touched on that with radiators. My truck is 1 of 766 made that year. So not many around. Kind of a small viewing audience but sure appreciated by any truck lover. Thanks again!

The old Dodge PU looks solid. I take it Montana where the truck comes from by the rear plate doesn't use road salt like it's used here in Massachusetts

@clembob8004
@clembob8004 27 күн бұрын
I'm from North Dakota, and if it's from eastern Montana they usually don't need to use any salt because they don't get much snow. If you get west further in the mountains, then they get snow but even there I don't think they use salt. As least I haven't seen any and I drive out there every year to go downhill skiing.

Been looking to get the gas tank out of the cab on my '66. I've seen a few options in the Sweptline forums and the Internet but curious as to what your opinion/advice would be on that. The fuel tank is small capacity to begin with and gas tends to slop out the filler tube after a fill up sometimes. Plus it just stinks, my wife doesn't like it especially on hot days. I'm also curious as to your opinion on an axle swap on the front for disc brakes. Would have to sacrifice the closed knuckle for an open Dana 44, drums work fine but it's sketchy sometimes. Cheers
@rocketresto
@rocketresto 27 күн бұрын
Few companies make disc brake kits for these, maybe Scarbird Brakes? I’d keep the cab tank, Vans auto makes repos now and if you get all new rubber for it it should seal fine.
