I have a 75 yo lady come in every 4 weeks. She was on a great A, C and SPF with me (getting results too). A cosmetic doctor switched her to Obagi since I last saw her and in that small amount of time, her skin looks horribly thin. I can’t wax or exfoliate her anymore. She thinks it must be ‘the best’ because a Dr recommended it, but yes she’s definitely translucent and pink. If that’s only 3ish weeks! And SPF wasn’t accounted for in her new routine 😭

Used tretinoin for two decades and it eventually caused hypervitaminosis A which is no joke. ( dessicated mucuous membranes: nose mouth eyes stomach and intestines causing discomfort and indigestion. Also hair loss and panic attacks. Disappeared all after discontinuation. Took me years to discover the culprit. I got prescription for cystic acne). My skin was flawless but my health suffered. I used none for five yrs then tried again. Boom, within a few months same problems. Now i use retinols OTC (NEUTROGENA) to great effect without repercussions.

false. You simply cannot get vitamin A toxicity from topical products like tretinoin. There is a huge amount of solid safety data for tretinoin now and it is not only safe to use long term, it helps protect your skin against sun damage and skin cancer. Yes it does boost collagen and make your skin thicker and stronger. Ms Joy's anecdote about her sister has nothing to do with the use of topical retinoids.

When you say not to use retinols around the eyes aside as a booster, are you meaning a prescription or even an otc eye cream with retinol in it? Do you find that when people with eczema and psoriasis that start to use larger molecule retinols dry out at first then experience healthy skin, since we know retinols are drying upon beginning use? Also, with people of those concerns, is it better to use larger molecule retinols vs smaller? Or just be certain it is a complex and monitor the skin? What about retinols on Asian skin? You said on dark skin it is great but I wonder on Asian skin. I always had acne growing up which led me into skin care. I hated going to the Dr because they never fixed the problem long term but only while using their prescriptions. I found out that way however, my skin loves retinols as well as glycolics yet I always react to salicylics. I am oily, sensitive and reactive but really got my acne under control except hormonal.
@NeridaJoySkincare
@NeridaJoySkincare 4 жыл бұрын
Yes.... i do not prefer to use daily eye products with retinols...thins and already this area to much. Asian skin can use retinols, but not every day(PM)...its too much usually. Everyone is different though and products formulas.... all so different. So once you find something or a brand that works for you...stick with it:)xoxo

What a disappointing video. I expect more from an esthetician, honestly. Goes to show that it’s not just about your years in the field but continuing your education and staying on top of the research and speaking from an evidence based place, not anecdotal experience. Since this is a rant video, I don’t feel as bad rebutting this in similar fashion. Look, prescription retinoids aren’t for everyone. They can be too much for very sensitive skin. If you’re someone who can’t use tretinoin, OTC retinoids are the way to go. Retinol has been shown to not be as effective as retinoic acid but it’s still beneficial to the skin. I will say though that retinol esters are lacking evidence and the results wise have been underwhelming. If you were arguing for retinol or retinaldehyde, I would be much more on board. You mention the molecular weight of these other retinoids but make no mention of the fact that they cannot be used by the skin until they undergo an oxidation reaction and become retinoic acid. For retinol, the OH group has to oxidize to an aldehyde and then a carboxylic acid. For the other ones you’ve mentioned it’s a 3 step conversion. But they all have to oxidize to retinoic which is just as important if not more as their size. Retinol is actually a smaller molecule than tretinoin as well which defeats your argument a bit here. You also say lump adapelene with other prescription retinoids that penetrate deeper yet it actually has low cutaneous absorption, due to its high affinity to retinoic acid receptor γ which is primarily in the epidermis. “Adapalene has a very low percutaneous absorption once the drug has penetrated the stratum corneum, so that it becomes entrapped in the epidermis and hair follicle, which are targeted areas (Millikan 2000).” You mention how tretinoin thins the skin over and over, which seems to be your big argument against it. Yet it only makes the stratum corneum more compact... which is only .01 to .04 mm thick so really impossible to notice that thinning. Long term studies have found that tretinoin initially thickens the epidermis in the short term but then it returns to base line over time. Evidence for that here: academic.oup.com/asj/article/26/2/233/219113 And again here where they note: “The stratum corneum and epidermal thickness returned to the normal during the course of treatment.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2699641/ Broken capillaries are mentioned yet retinoids are often used to help repair broken capillaries funny though and Harvard University notes that: “Retinoids reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. They also stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color.” www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/do-retinoids-really-reduce-wrinkles I see your single anecdotal experience mentioned often as a reason to use OTC retinoids instead but that’s unreliable. You’re a single person sharing your very subjective experience and we don’t know what your skin would have looked at if you’d used tretinoin instead or even if you’d used nothing instead. What happened to your sister is very unfortunate and goes to show that someone suggesting supplements who isn’t a doctor can be very risky. But both your examples with your sister and Accutane involve oral Vit A which is known to be dangerous when improperly used. Tretinoin has been used since the 1970s and has decades of research behind its efficacy and safety so an anecdotal experience or two, one of which isn’t even topical Vit A, doesn’t do much for me. You say we don’t realize yet what tretinoin will do and we will be stuck with thin skin.... yes we do, it’s called decides of research. No evidence has found that it thins the skin long term. This is one of many other research articles but this year long study found: “Treatment of photodamaged skin with tretinoin produced an 80 percent increase in collagen I formation, as compared with a 14 percent decrease in collagen formation with the use of vehicle alone.” www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199308193290803 Wow, not only implying a very short esthetician program makes you more knowledgeable than a derm but shading your skin. Very unprofessional. Re: “Blue light from your computer” being damaging to your skin has been debunked and there wasn’t really evidence behind it anyway. You’d need about 40 J/cm² of light to damage the skin and even the worst case scenario studies would require you sitting in front of a screen for days straight. Educator Michelle from Lab Muffin Beauty Science who has a PhD in biochemistry explains it well here: labmuffin.com/blue-light-computers-phones-damage-skin/ For anti aging, they’ve found that lower doses of tretinoin are equally effect and it’s really only acne where you need those high doses. One of those studies is linked above. So if you stick to a lower strength at actually get through the acclimation period and follow your doctor’s recommendations of using the tretinoin after moisturizer to buffer, skipping other irritating actives and exfoliants, using a low PH non foaming cream cleanser, using skin barrier friendly ingredients like niacinamide and ceramides, etc then you won’t have the tiny shiny look you can get from dehydration and impaired barrier function from what’s essentially over exfoliation long term. It will pass once your skin acclimates. Exactly, it’s a prescription drug so it’s undergone decade of clinical trials and other long term studies on its safety. That’s how we know it’s not toxic like you claim. Other topical OTC retinoids would also then be toxic since they’re being converted to retinoic acid too. Stopped at the 21 minute mark after you started pushing the product you sell and it all suddenly became clear. Thankfully most estheticians aren’t like this but the few that speak negatively on both drugstore and prescription skincare since they can’t sell and profit off either disappoint me. Not mad or trying to be overly bitchy btw, just responding to a rant with a rant and wanted to provide actual evidence for anyone who cares to learn more. Don’t blindly listen to someone, look at the evidence and see if it supports their argument. Edit: Edit: plenty of treatments thicken the skin. “All cases evidenced epithelium thickening, decrease in melanin pigmentation and densification of upper dermis collagen (p = 0.03).” bmcdermatol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12895-017-0066-5
