Stick drift comes from the actual friction created when you're constantly moving the stick around. The more the parts rub back and forth, the more friction, and the more wear and tear. Simply holding the stick in one single position, either with a toothpick, rubber band, or just your thumb cant really cause stick drift as the stick is not moving and thus not generating any friction.

Holding the stick in the same direction for a long period of time will create memory on that spring. I had a controller that had spring memory and it was defaulting to the left instead of center. Stick drift is usually caused by wear on the potentiometer sensors of the joystick. This is because parts of those sensors have to physically touch against eachother to measure movement, creating inevitable wear and tear as they lightly scrape together. This is why hall effect sensors don't experience drift in the same way, they're based on magnets that don't need to touch to measure movement, so there's no wear on the sensor itself over time, though it can still experience wear on the other mechanical parts of it, same as any joystick, as well as inevitable changes to the magnetic fields though those take many, many years for good quality magnets, unless kept in unfavorable conditions like very high/low temperatures.

@logane1102
@logane1102 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the time it's not the potentiometer that causes the drift. It's the physical mechanism that has degraded and has more play in the center. Once it degrades enough, that center play will allow the stick to rest into a position that registers as a significant input in the software that interfaces with the controller. This type of degradation of the analog stick will cause the slight drifting we are used to when a controller has been used extensively, the kind that causes your crosshair to ever so slightly move in a certain direction. Typically modern games are tuned to ignore the first 5-12% of the analog stick input. Older games typically were tuned to ignore the first 10-25% of the analog stick input, as the older analog stick design that was used in the 6th and 7th generation controllers weren't as tight in the center. This ignoring of input is referred to as a deadzone. Once the analog stick has enough play in the center to allow it to rest in a position that exceeds the deadzone that was programmed into the software, the drifting occurs. For optimal calibration, you want the analog stick's center play to perfectly match the deadzone, where no drifting occurs, and any amount of positive pressure applied to the analog stick in any direction is registered as an input. Sometimes it is the potentiometer's fault. Sometimes it is not calibrated perfectly from the factory and registers a slight input in one direction even though the stick is at dead center, sometimes it is faulty and causes analog input become very erratic and renders the analog stick unusable, however, this is less common.
@postingid1717
@postingid1717 2 жыл бұрын
This is 100% correct and one of the best explanations of stick drift that I've ever read. If the input reads something ridiculous like >50% tilt in one direction when you're not touching the stick at all, then yes, it's one of the potentiometers. Either the wiper disc is broken or the black conductive coating has worn off the inside of the pot. The latter tends to happen due to dirt accumulation over time or liquid from spills. But a heavily used stick can "drift" away from 0 even when the potentiometers are still good. Some games have a deadzone of as little as 10%. To put that into perspective, I bought a brand new PS5 controller and the left stick, out of the box, drifts downwards by 5.8%. This is normal and I think it's unreasonable to expect every joystick in every new controller to be at exactly 0. So I absolutely do not meant to complain about it. But I bring it up just to point out that even though 5.8% is within the deadzone and won’t be regarded as input, it does only leave me with 4.2% "leeway", so to speak, before it does begin to actually affect gameplay. If the stick had been perfectly centered out of the box then I'd have 10% of leeway. If you play games frequently then you could easily cause enough wear and tear to increase the drift to >10% in a matter of weeks. Once it reaches that threshold it's beyond the deadzone and will begin to be regarded as input by certain games. You can fix the latter problem easily though by simply bending the plastic bit that moves the wiper disc in the opposite direction of the drift. Of course, this is easier to do with PS4 and PS5 controllers since you can do it while the board is plugged in to your computer and you can see the readings in test software while you make adjustments. With Xbox controllers you have to separate the two PCBs, make adjustments, plug them back together to check the readings, and then repeat until you get the sticks perfect.

Putting a toothpick in like described gives greater access for dust and debris particles to get in. Dust and debris is the number 1 cause of stick drift. I've cleaned out so many players controllers who had stick drift. Found eye lashes, arm hair, dust, dirt, etc. Whenever your controller is not in use, put it inside a case, or lay a zip lock bag/microfiber cloth/etc (any light weight material) over the top of it to prevent dust and debris from falling in. The controller analog stick has the rounded bottom by design (it's not there to look cool or mesh in with the controller, it's there to act as a dust shield). When cleaning your analog sticks without taking controller apart you need to have the controller upside down when wiping off dust. Use an alcohol soaked q tip and clean it.

The springs can loosen up enough from abuse when the stick returns slightly off center of the dead zones, BUT it'd have to be held in that position for many hundreds if not thousands of hours. But the springs don't get stressed in these mechanisms unless really abused, as they're actually stopped by the thumb stick touching the controller shell, not the springs 'bottoming out'... Springs don't tend to 'wear out' unless overstressed by pushing them past their normal operating range

People are complaining about stick drift happening so soon but I've had my controller(s) for over 2 years and they still work absolutely fine. One is a gears of War controller, and the other is an older controller (about 7 years old) that has a broken bumper, but the joystick is fine. If you actually take care of it, and change the way you use it, it goes a long way
@MagnusWendt
@MagnusWendt 2 жыл бұрын
Stick drift is caused by the potentiometer not reading 0 when the stick is centered. The stick is centered by a spring and by placing a toothpick in the thumbstick for a prolonged period you may wear out the spring so that its definition of center no longer aligns with the potentiometer's definition of center. I.e. stick drift!

Insane how people in the comments defend multi million-dollar companies. "muh muh nothing lasts forever you shouldn't sue x company, it's not their fault it's normal your 60$ gamepad doesn't last even a month just get a better job muh muh" I'm just speechless, sorry for expecting high quality when I pay 60$. My cheap dirt logitech f310 lasted for almost two years, my dualshock 2 lasted for almost two years or so too and in both cases the issue was the cable - I just didn't bother to reinforce it, the controllers were fine. But in 2024 I'm supposed to pay double for something that won't even last 2 or 3 months and company shills keep telling me it's normal. I'm really getting tired of this trend when people spout ABSOLUTE nonsense big corps indoctrinated into them and act as if they said something smart.

In my case, the stick drift is caused when you pressed the sticks forcefully and constantly for a lomg time. Just map sprint LS to LB and your stick will survive the drift for years probably. Now even changing sprint from LS will cause slight drift after 1 year or 2, but most games lets you change deadzone to a higher number that eliminates drift if its not severe

For those that dont know. Stick drift is caused be repeatative motion. In other words, just holding the joystick still is literally the least risky way. Its the wagling around that we do as an active player that causes it to happen. We, the player, are thrashing around to potentiometers by flicking the joystick around. This isn't a bad thing though. They are designed to be used. So please do not use this as an excuse to not give the games your best.

ALOT of stick drift is just dead skin/grime/hair in the actual axis of the knob and if opened and cleaned can usually solve the issue. Over time wear and tear will wear the edges down and drift will appear, but the people saying 'had my controller 2 weeks and already have drift' its probably not the controller being broken rather then you've already managed to get something inside the axis

Protip: As someone who has worked with potentiometers in controllers of various kinds quite a lot, you can often fix jitter or "drift" by cleaning them with WD40 and letting them dry.
@kmemz
@kmemz 9 ай бұрын
Sure, if you want to degrade all the plastics around the potentiometer and cause worse issues for yourself. Use Isopropyl alcohol. It's not anywhere near as harsh as WD-40, and it evaporates away practically instantly. If you want something that lubricates the inside of the stick, wait for the alcohol to dry and apply some 205g0 like mechanical keyboard modders use, that's plastic-safe.

leaving an analog stick pushed or pulled to the same spot for a large amount of time can wear other parts and cause stick drift tho. Although the toothpick can't cause stick drift, using this method this to AFK something for many hours can. But only if you do it regularly. Don't worry much about it tho, since the drift is more likely to show due to the company's fault than your own doings lol

the issue with these potentiometers is that these are not encapsulated and collect alot of dust and moisture that will eventually lead to jumpy contact or corrosion, which leads to altered voltage output, which then causes the drift. the carbon traces are also not overly wear resistant and you can wear through the layer aswell, which is another problem. dust and corrosion can be cleaned out most of the time, but a used up carbon film is a death sentence. if you then combine that with cheap quality, you got your desaster.
