No, it’s not a typo. Yes, it is one word. The Mazdaspeed 3 can be considered one of the underrated hot hatches that came out right around the end of the 2000s. Even though they were only produced for a few years and only saw a few generations, the cars themselves left a big impact on car enthusiasts. Between the turbo noises and crazy torque steer, the Mazdaspeed 3 holds a special place in peoples hearts. Join Alex today as he takes a dive into just what you might expect if you plan on picking up a Mazdaspeed 3.

Nothing too exciting, but it was clean with low miles. 68k miles to be exact. Paid 6 grand cash for it, and it's been a solid little guy ever since. Looking forward to earning enough money to trade that in and take on a car payment for something much more exciting.

@Fr0zenfr0st
@Fr0zenfr0st 5 жыл бұрын
Also another tip for the Mazdaspeed platform (either Mazdaspeed 3 or 6) it does have two issues you missed. One of them is the smoking turbo. Now I have yet to encounter this on my Mazdaspeed 6 with 90k miles, but it's a good thing to check for. These cars turbo seals aren't the best and when they're beat on hard and then the person shuts the car off immediately. It doesn't allow the turbo to cool properly and puts a lot of wear on already not great seals. Second is the high pressure fuel pump internals. Now if your looking to mod the car preformance wise your going to need to upgrade those internals almost immediately. The stock HPFP internals are getting pushed to the limit stock so anymore is gonna ask for a big blown up problem. Other than that it's really a great and awesome fun car. And worth checking out the Mazdaspeed 6 it's the sedan AWD version of the platform
@Vykk_Draygo
@Vykk_Draygo 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, not good to do that with any turbo car really. It's why some modern cars have pumps to cycle oil through even after the car shuts down.
@skyelarpayne3941
@skyelarpayne3941 5 жыл бұрын
I’m convinced the smoking turbo issue is a myth at this point. My gen2 K04 turbo is a champ at 107k miles and I’ve yet to talk to another speed owner with a turbo seal issue! The hpfp internals are an absolute must though.
@lazza1514
@lazza1514 5 жыл бұрын
@@skyelarpayne3941 Smoking turbo is real..often caused by replacing the downpipe ( no cats ) . This can usually be fixed by replacing the oil feed bolt ( Banjo bolt) with a smaller one and setting the idle higher with the Cobb Accessport. Worked a treat on mine.
@jb6574

I bought one of the very first MS3's in October 2006. Though it would be considered "fast-ish" now, it was crazy fast then. Nothing in the class could come close. I only modified the suspension a bit (stiffened it up), and tracked it a bit a VIR. Daily drove it reliably 325,000 miles and sold it with the original clutch and turbo. I'm glad to see people recognizing the Mazdaspeed3, and the mazdaspeed6 now a days. They are great car, and the 2nd generation mazdaspeed3, depending on year offer great feature that can pass for modern cars. Great car, but maintenance is key, and checking certain things before buying one to insure; it is a good buy, depending on previous owner. Overall great lil video.

Gen Juan owner here, only major issue these engines have is as stated gen 1 needs front mount intercooler, second issue that all of them have is you need to do upgraded high pressure fuel pump internals. Other than those issues the cars are solid as hell and fun to drive. Gen 1 is best tho

I got a speed 6 in excellent condition from a guy who bought it and then got deployed. The guy before him however made this thing an all out track ripper. All stage 2, big brake kit, stage 2 clutch. And he had all the mods installed by a pro so there’s records of it. And to make it better being a track car, the interior is as close to flawless as it gets. I’m suuuper happy

First gens had turbo recalls and bad pcv issues. Many cx7s and speed 6s shared the issues (same engine). The second generation sorted this stuff out. Gen won is def the more subtle, fast hatch but you should be checking compression before you buy one of them.

The big problem is that the stock fuel pump, even on stock tune, will lean out under heavy throttle. So, long pulls will cause lots of damage to the engine. This is remidied by hi pressure fuel pumps, or just high pressure internals. I honestly cant beleive you didnt mention this as its a well known achilles heel of the mazdaspeed 3. Its a life support mod most people do as soon as they buy one.

I got an ms3. And pros: Very easy to mod and achive high HP Brakes are massive! You will be ok wit upgraded pads and stock calipers and rotors on 500 hp. Has bose sound system Has automatic headlights and windshield wipers. Adjustable headlights ( they move up and down with a push of a button) Great sound! Reliable Fast Fun Easy to drive It has so much! I bought mine for 4k and i dont regret it. Keep in mind its a Ford, almost the same engine found in the focus rs, and ecoboost, although i think the ms3 engine is more reliable. Also k04 turbo sucks. So a bnr s2 or 3 is totally worth your money.
@ryanrthrockmorton
@ryanrthrockmorton 5 жыл бұрын
Lemme fix that for ya real quick. Cons: - Factory "premium" Bose sound system These systems are crap when brand new and utter shit when old. All the speakers' surrounds deteriorate in to dust which causes them to sound crunchy/unlistenable and for an upgraded product the staging/imaging leaves a lot to be desired, especially when they wanna charge you more for it over the normal system. Oh, and this goes for all manufacturers and models that decide to use Bose for their upgraded stereo systems.

I feel like I got lucky with my '13 speed3. -Somewhat Normal clutch wear at 120k miles. -cobb cold air intake -it started misfiring like crazy on 3 cylinders (I feel like it did that bcuz of a combination of the cold air intake, non upgraded fuel pump, and abuse... cylinders running lean at high rpm bcuz the oem fuel pump doesn't match the speed of the intake) after replacing all the plugs n coils it ran like a dream) -changed the oil and started running into the dreaded p0012 after babying the car or striving it really slow, the light went away, I still fear replacement of the vvt assembly either way the likely suspect for me is a bad vvt oil control valve especially since the light stays off if I drive slower... if the valve is replaced and the issue still persists then I'll just replace the vvt as well 🙃 -I'm also getting electric power steering issues it goes out on the freeway and I get my dash lights and entertainment system freaking out 🙃... overall amazing car just becareful not to blow it up if you got a cold air intake and no upgraded fuel pump... might just buy the stock box jeez 🙃

The largest concern on buying used would be the previous owners mod path. Also VERY IMPORTANT upgrade fuel pump first as the oem spring rate cannot support high boost fuel requirements. After the you can run 22+psi ;)
