I didn't see any negative comments on the whole spray with water to stop the anxiety thing BUT think of it like this... would you rather have anxiety for long periods of time or small moments of having a wet face.... I'd rather have a wet face.
@stormiedays65377 жыл бұрын
mari fujiyoshi yes! I've never understood why ppl have such an issue with using water as a training implement as a last resort. My family has raised show dogs (Australian Shepherds) for over 50 years and I have been to more dog shows than restaurants haha I've also seen the top dog trainers in the world use water as a training tool. I think the most ppl that have a problem with it don't realize dogs ARE NOT HUMANS and they don't have a good grasp or education on dogs.
@NoThisisLeia7 жыл бұрын
Wait, you think being sprayed with water will make a dog less anxious? It is treating the behavior, not the cause. If you didn't like being alone, how would you feel if your family locked you in a room and punished you for crying or yelling? Anxiety and fear should be treated with positive reinforcement. The dog needs help adjusting to the situation, not punishment. Certain types of positive punishment can be useful and necessary, but never with fearful, anxious or reactive dogs.

Anxiety is part of a dogs personality, DNA, genetic makeup. All dogs have it to a greater or lesser extent. Dogs are social animals when left alone it's instinctual that they feel vulnerable. Even more so for a guard or working breed. Guard dogs love to b w/thier owners. Ur so right that many try to treat the behavior without much thought to the cause. Most issues arrise bcz people leave them alone for an 8 hour day. Get 2,3 or more dogs so they have security in their own pack.

My auntie had a malamute and he's beautiful. Sadly her husband died and she lost her house so she couldn't keep him. Someone she knew begged to adopt him and after having him for one day, she called and told my auntie she had to take him back because he was frightening her (just by his size!) I don't know why she took him in the first place. My aunt was devastated as she thought she had done the best for him. Luckily I was helping her move and rang a friend who had recently lost his malamute. He came and adopted him that same day. They are literally best of friends now xxx

Spraying water is actually positive reinforcement. The "positive" part means that you give something in this case, a splash of water in the face. Negative reinforcement is to take something away.

Comments like this are so annoying. I got my senior dog because the elderly owners were no longer able to give him an active lifestyle. He is 10 but he LOVES to hike, run at the beach and bound through fields for several hours a day. Sometimes giving up your pet is the right thing for them.
@jammiereynolds20067 жыл бұрын
You forgot to mention that they shed like no other dog out there! I have 3 rescue dogs...Malamute & 2 Siberian Huskies and if you don't like hair everywhere and all over you, then these dogs aren't for you. When they are "blowing their coat" it comes off in chunks and its actually caused by a new topcoat coming in and pushing the fluffy underfur out. It should take your husky about three weeks to finish blowing their coat each shed and they do this twice a year, in the spring and fall. So you will need a special brush for your Husky and a trash bag because yes they shed that much. You'll be saying to them "How in the world are you not bald yet??" They just keep shedding and shedding! You will find hair everywhere and I mean everywhere. 😜It takes a lot of vacuuming, cleaning and lint brushes for your clothes but I wouldn't trade one single moment, they have my heart and I love them dearly.😍 💕💞

Great video! I have an 8 month old malamute. He is wonderful but as a puppy he needed so much attention, which I honestly (and stupidly) wasn't really prepared for. I've had him with me at the office since he was about 15 weeks old. Big, big challenge. But he is worth every challenge. Now we have maybe 10 % challenging moments and 90 % joy and love and fun. :-) My advice and warning for potential malamute owners: as mentioned in the video, people love the look of them but might not understand how much time and commitment they need. It's ok if you don't have that but please know yourself well enough and don't get a malamute unless you are looking for a pet that needs almost as much attention as a child. The dog won't be happy, and you won't be happy. He or she will end up in a shelter and that's just really horrible for any animal. When I am out for a walk with him, people admire him for his looks, friendliness and obedience (acquired by love, treats, patience, time and consisteny). When they show particular interest, I warn them not to get one unless they are fully committed. Thank you so much for your video and for stressing those important points! Malamutes can be absolutely wonderful dogs but you must be a very committed and loving owner.
@DannyDirewolf7 жыл бұрын
Great comment and advice! I agree with everything you've said. We were not prepared for Danny as a puppy either! He was very needy and it really was like having a baby for 2 months. Constant attention and care. It was very frustrating at times. But with love, care, patience and commitment Danny became a wonderful dog. He's so much easier and relaxed now. Adult Danny is wonderful. We loved puppy Danny but he was a challenge. My husband feels the same way. If you are not fully committed, it's not a good idea to get a Malamute.

Other non positive and non invasive/harmful reinforcement techniques I've heard of are clickers and "no-no cans", which are basically coffee cans/other cans that have a lid and are filled with small objects like beans, small rocks, etc. When they do the thing you don't want them to do, you shake the can and it makes a loud, jangly, startling noise and it gets their attention so you can correct the behavior. Also, just as a tip, training a dog not to do something is *really* hard, especially because a lot of the behaviors that are considered undesirable are in part natural reactions to stimuli in their environment. There are a couple ways to go about it. One is praising them when they're not doing the thing you're trying to correct. Example: they bark a lot when people come in the house or when strangers walk by. When they're not barking, praise them/award them for being quiet (say "Quiet. Good dog!"). Another way is to train them to do something else in response to a trigger instead of the thing you're trying to fix. One thing I've seen is training a dog who barks and jumps a lot on guests to go get a toy or pillow instead. It redirects their energy and fulfills an instinct they have naturally: presenting gifts to an alpha.

I fully recommend adopting an adult dog from the pound/animal shelter. I was a volunteer that walked dogs at one for a few months, and the more mature dogs were the most behaved/trained ones. They were also the MOST loveliest dogs I had ever met. The young ones were always so problematic (misbehaved, untrained) and they could be frustrating sometimes. And when you adopt a mature dog, they've already gone through all the annoying stages and most likely already trained/family friendly. Also you give them a good home in their last years.
@SaveTheHero2107 жыл бұрын
sregi22 I am considering adopting an older dog to give it a home and save it from being put down. it would also be easier on me as a first time dog owner. At the same time I don't think there's any thing wrong with getting young puppy and putting in the time to raise it.
@TaxEvasi0n7 жыл бұрын
traveling I agree with you 100%. I only feel that way about young dogs because I personally would rather the "finished product" after interacting with such lovey dogs and experience mischevious ones. However, once you understand the psychology of dogs, they can be quite easily trained with persistence (and treats). I don't mean to turn anyone off puppies, however I do urge people to adopt mature dogs from shelters because you're not taking such a risk of personality. And like I said in my previous post, because they are the lovliest dogs ever. After my time volunteering, I can't see myself buying a puppy from a pet shop.

My dog howls at everything new, or when he is alone. His barks are like sneezes and it's cute. I have just now realized how much Birdie (my dog) is like a Alaskan Malamute. We use a leach that goes around his muzzle to steer him better, not because he is mean. It does not hurt him. Also he was bred to be a cart dog, to pull carts with stuff that could weigh 1500 pounds.

You made so many great points. I own 3 siberian huskies, which are way smaller than Danny, but people still look at them and think "Oh wow, so pretty. I want one!" but they don't realize it's basically like having a permanent 2 year old human and then just pass them off because they aren't willing to put the effort in to consistently train and maintain them or exercise them. it's very tramautic for a dog to be passed off from owner to owner. Just like a toddler, they need consistency in home life and mine seem to thrive on a daily schedule such as timed runs, feedings, training, grooming, working, followed up by ample free time and lots of love.

When they howl, it is so beautiful a sound! I used to have a rescue American Dingo and she had two favorite sounds she'd always howl to. Sometimes firetrucks. R.I.P. she passed of cancer, she was telepathic with me i swear!

I love that you are all bundled up! It makes me think that your home is nice and cool for your Malamute! That's something only a true dog lover would do. As we speak I am shivering because my dog was hot. I put the air conditioning on 50°F. I'd rather be a little uncomfortable knowing that my pup is happy!

I grew up with samoyeds in the house. These big fluffy dogs are the BEST dogs. They're big lovers and I miss my big bears every day. :) They're a lot of work and their fur gets EVERYWHERE but they're worth it.

I have my Malamute, Chloee Bell since she was 10 wks old. Trained her like I did with my wolf/husky. Alfa wolf training. straight Praise and correction. Same thing I did with my wolf/husky from day 1. He took my heart and was awesome around people and even kids and other dogs.. My Bell does not go up or down stairs or in and out of a door before me unless I give her the ok command. yes they do not like water much. The 4th day with my Bell I took her to the lake/beach area and it was a sunny July day with a bit of wind and it too me 4 hrs of patients to get her to go into the water and play. she would go in and then run away from the small wave that was heading towards her and shore. It was so sweet to watch as I encouraged and play with her. she will be 10 this may 2 2017. and loves beach days but still will not swim too deep or for long at the beach. Loves to play and roll around in the sand. But when I take her to the jack pines/ sand pit area where a lot of people tend to take there dogs for long walks in the bush trails for off leash fun. there is a pond she love to go into and even will swim for a good long time.. I figured out her prob with the beach and a pond . with the beach she can only see the shore or a spot to get out is the way she came in. and a pond she can swim to any side and get out. And plays in it like there is no tomorrow. Comes home and has a big ass long lounging nap in the sun in back yard. And when it comes to the hose in the yard she runs away and hates it when it is on.. even while filling her pool for her in the yard. Once pool is full she will play in it as long as the hose is put away. lol... She loves to smell my flowers in the flower pots in front and back yard. I also have a 20 yr old cat who eats before her and she will wait until he looks at her and meows to let her know he left her something. especially if it is some chicken, they both love chicken.. And yes I feed my pets human food at times along with their dry food. and milk bones, mintis, and whiskes treats for the cat in his dry old man food. Love your old guy he looks like a sweet heart of a cuddle bunner.. Enjoy your big fur ball for as long as he is with you. They are loving ,loyal, kind, strong, coat blowing, hair leaving everywhere, teddy bears. She is more of a talker than a howler. My profile pick is a pick of my Towbars Chloee Bell this is her full name registered with the CKC. when I got her and tattooed in her ears. and had all her shots up to date. She was born in NWT.

its great that you made a video like this, but as a groomer i would add the obvious: HAIR! EVERYWHERE! and lots of dense undercoat that needs to be brushed out frequently. if they cant afford a groomer appx 70+ USD at least once a month, this dog is not the dog for them. on a side note, it looks like your furbaby has been chewing his paws for a while, and his ears appear to be a little yeasty. does he have allergies? not judging, just woud love to offer some advice on combatting it if youd like.
@NicoleGuarnera7 жыл бұрын
Calli T i wouldnt say that, i think she cares for her dog. Older dogs often develop allergies to the elements or dietary allergies which could cause dermatitis or yeast issues. It looks more like a yeast issue, which is faily common and treatable. Somr people just arent aware of that though. Dogs are a whole different creature than humans, and Im only educated on it because I professionally specialize in canine skin issues, as well as groom dogs who dont have them.

I once had a couple ask me if they should get a Shiba Inu. They said they were thinking about it but would have to give the dog up when the baby came along. The woman was a few weeks pregnant at the time. So they wanted a dog for a few months and then were going to give it up. Of course I said NO NO NO NO NO! I couldn't believe they were even considering something like that. Thank goodness they didn't get one. It's wonderful that you took in your mum's dog and cat. They are yours now
