when I was a kid I would get out of school and walk over to my mother's work. She worked at a small business where they repaired burlap and later on polyester feed bags, so they could be re-used at the mill. They had 2 huge black Singers, kind of like a 201 on steroids 10x over, and they used string or thread thick as the stuff you would use for tying meat while cooking, on a spool cone about 6-8" high. It was amazing to watch Mom run that thing she went a hundred miles an hour I always worried about her getting her hand under the huge needle! I assume that was an industrial Singer probably meant for bigger things than feed bags.

Here's a fun story...a few weeks back I was at my local metal recyclers and the local military base dropped off a full, new roll of black leather grained vinyl and then there was a new roll of black textured upholstery cloth new as well.... unsure of the yards but one was 12 in dia, other was probably 18' in dia..... At 1:09 when threading the top thread through the tension discs you don't go all the way around to the small perpendicular post on the right side of the discs (visible at 2:10)-yet some people tell me to thread up and over that little post then down through the controller discs. My vintage Seiko top threading is very similar to yours, but now I'm questioning the different ways to thread it.
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 5 жыл бұрын
I have found that threading has a bit of leeway or another way to say that might be that there is more than one way to skin a cat. I have threaded machines "wrong" and got them to produce beautiful stitches. To the point about that post in the tension assembly, some manufactures recommend to go around it and others do not. I don't pretend to be the final say on any of this but I do know what works and sometimes you just need to try it and see. There are always so many variables but if you can produce flawless stitches then that is what really matters. Check out this video for some more thoughts on threading variation if you are interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHO9iWmprNyGl5I

This is a great video. I have a question for you. I’m in an upholstery class and a couple of the machines are having an issue. As your video shows, when you bring the thread up underneath and up on the left side of the tension spring, I know you’re supposed to hear and feel a slight click as the thread pops past that little point that bends back in toward the middle of the tension discs. A couple of the machines won’t do that click and after you sew just a short distance, the thread bounces completely out from the tension discs. Our instructor tries his best to keep the machines running but the school isn’t very proactive in maintaining the machines. Any suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Alexander, thanks for your videos. I picked up a Singer walking foot machine today and it looks the exact same size and shape as your 211 however I think it might be a bit older, perhaps. It has a serial number but no longer a model number or name on it. Fully serviced ready to go so I plan to use it for hobby work including car upholstery, horse rugs etc. I'd love to find more information on my Singer but I have no idea where to find it. I'd also like to understand the clutch thing as mine is direct belt drive and my right foot hasn't learned to go slow yet! EDIT: I googled around online and discovered that mine is a model 211G166 made in Germany!

I just became the owner of four older industrial machines, two straight stitch from the 1940's or 1950's one a Singer one a Pfaff, one Columbia blind stitch and one Chandler blind stitch also a Babylock ES605 overlock. Safe Cleaner? I don't know friend. Seems like the best cleaners are toxic, carcinogenic or flammable. While not a cleaner I have found that liberal use of sewing machine oil and some movement will get most machines up and running and that is pretty safe.

Some things to check. Bad Thread- rotten thread breaks on properly adjusted machines. Check for any burrs around the hook and thread paths. It you are getting a "rats nest" on the bottom of your fabric tighten you top tension. If it breaks on every cycle then slowly turn by hand and try to see where it catches.

I believe that the bobbin on your sewing should unwind counter-clockwise, not the way you inserted it. Other industrial machines, like the 206RB are clock-wise but not your design. There is also a small pin on the right side if the tension disks that I believe should be looped around to make the thread engage fully through the disks. I've seen conflicting instructions about whether to hit this pin on the entry or exit from the disks, but I have chosen to hit it on the exit. What do you think?
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 2 жыл бұрын
I have noted conflicting info on these things too and I have done the pins and the rotations both ways. Interestingly to me I have found that it all can work fine. My basic thought on it all is that you pick the way you want to stick with and then you can dial in a consistent and reliable tension for your setup based on your choices. Right and wrong here are somewhat subjective ; if the end result is a beautiful well tensioned stitch line then can that really be wrong? I have made all the mistakes and I'm not done yet but here is some good info on loading bobbins that I think is mostly right. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIqoZnVshLWdas0

This is not a Consew, it is a Singer 211U166A. The Singer 211 series is great.

I thought that sewing machine that runs with an internal timing belt were not made for thick fabric 😱😱🤯🤯 maybe I was wrong?? I acquired a Necchi rzi here in italy where I live. The guy who repair these machines told me it’s not made for thick fabric like leather ( no need to tell ‘cause I use her for garments) but maybe, after seeing your machine, I think mine might also do some upholstery 🤨🤨🤨🧐🧐😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎

@Paula Johnson It's true. I've sewn off and on forever on home grade machines. Finally started acquiring & using industrial machines (Juki 5550-6, Pfaff 1420 & United 2220-10). Local shops only want to sell new plastic machines...because very quickly you'll have to come back to buy replacement plastic machines. Even the local Pfaff dealer told me, "Just go find parts online." I stood there thinking, "Yeah, I could buy every item in your store online!?! But that's not why I'm standing here." I'm learning there is a semi-underground "Old Guard" of local shops that love both industrial machines AND helping customers. It's a shame it's so hard to "break through" to find them. Best, @HoneyOnWales
