as a graphic designer of over 10 years, my biggest tip is a controversial one... See what other people are doing in the industry and imitate it. That's all we're really doing as graphic designers, seeing what's worked already, take 5 or more examples, and create something unique out of them. Once I got rid of the guilt from doing this, my design skills massively improved in a very short space of time. 99.9% of projects as a junior designer require you to work fast on budget, so there is literally no other option. Dive in!

Hey, for the last six month I have made lot of photomanipulations, mock-up, vector art, typography, model 3d based on tutorials/speed art on yt. Some work i modify a little. Can i publish this work (my hard skill) on graphic site (for example behance) for interview or should I create my own page becouse people do not like someone who redraw/imitate other work?

I was a Graphic Designer who went to school in the pre-computer age from the late 1980s. I bought my first apple IICi in 1991 and still have it along will a very heavy large monitor. This computer allowed me to have a fairly thriving freelance business back in the day. I really do need to get rid of it at some point but I am reluctant because of the work I produced. Anyway, I decided to pursue a different career path that was more financially stable back then. I'm now 61 and would like to possibly dabble with this as a part-time career and the only thing holding me back is to completely re-learn all of the adobe products, web design, Imac hardware, and how to market myself in a large pool of young people. I have a really great understanding and appreciation for what is considered "Good Design." Understanding the internet and all of the tools that are available is overwhelming. I would simply like for this to be a life skill for me even if I don't make a huge income. There is so much Awful Design that is put together by those who may be tech-savvy but simply doesn't understand design principles. I'm hoping that I might have a shot at this and it's not just a pipe dream...

Thanks so much for sharing! I can imagine the software now would be very different to the 80s and quite overwhelming to re-learn, but like you said the principals you already know should stand you in good stead! I hope you can get back to doing design, even if it's just as a fun life skill :) If you did want to look into learning Adobe software there are so many videos and online courses that start from the essentials for people who are totally new to it, and once you get going you'll probably find it's less overwhelming than you might have thought :)

Will you are just awesome. I watch a LOT of your videos. I've always dappled in graphic design on my own for years but never thought I was any good at it. Went the just get a job to put food on the table route for years. But then I did a art and mental health nonprofit and designed the whole thing and fell in love with it. I finally did a portfolio and took the leap to make one. I hope to get a job in the artistic field soon. I really hope I'm good enough though I have no art school training but it's in my soul to design. And you know I'm always watching your tutorials for pointers on how to improve my work.

Wanted to give a shout out to the software program Affinity (Designer, Publisher, Photo.) These are great tools at a bargain price for designers who are just starting out (like myself) that maybe cant yet justify the price of the adobe suite. Certainly not as robust as Adobe but starting out sometimes its best to just get the basics down before you move onto more complex programs like Adobe.

I try to use each Adobe app for its best intended purpose. So if I am making some whacky image or editing a photo, I use Photoshop. If I am doing vector art I use Illustrator. If I am doing anything that is going to be printed I use InDesign. You can do a lot of similar things in each, but I guess for me it depends on the final product. A print media that has vectors and images I will build in their respective tools and then bring them into InDesign to finish. That is just my personal workflow.

This is excellent! I've been basically an amateur graphic designer for years, doing pretty alright considering no formal graphic design education. But now that I've been designing merch, it's all the more important I get more real and aware of some basics so the people printing my stuff don't face palm every time I send them a new design. They really want me working in Illustrator but I'm definitely more comfortable in Photoshop. Illustrator makes my head hurt and seems a lot less intuitive or just surprisingly complex in ways I don't understand. But the graphic gods demand I become better friends with vectors so here we go 😂. I've been doing it long enough that this year I'm gonna make it a goal to get more of the basic principles most graphic designers know under my belt.

Thanks will! I’ve been a graphic designer for 6 years, I’m so demotivated, I don’t know if it was the job or the pandemic. I got so annoyed with people micromanaging my creativjty, making boring things like folders and I didn’t see the point in design anymore, I just didn’t care. I wonder if it’s normal to feel this way? Maybe I’m not fit for the job? I just wonder what you or anybody thinks about this
@willpatersondesign
@willpatersondesign Жыл бұрын
I know it's easier said than done, but not taking on work from micromanaging clients may help. When discussing the work with them before doing the paperwork make sure you explain your process clearly to them and how you work - if they're coming to you with a shopping list and telling you what to do and how to do it then they may not be the client for you. Similarly having work you enjoy on your portfolio will attract more of that kind of client - if you have a portfolio with a lot of 'boring' work (whatever that might be for you) even though it may be very good, you will ultimately get more clients wanting the kind of thing they've seen on your portfolio! Hope this helps!

What are the thoughts on AI in the graphic design world? I've always been interested in creative stuff like this, but with the likes of Midjourney and all the other AI generative art platforms out there now they can create pretty amazing logos by just giving it a sentence, so it sort of has been pretty hesitant to pursue anything creative, at least for a living, aren't graphic designers under serious threat?

As a student in the art space and being on a quest to find a sustainable career in Art I feel like it’s like finding a diamond in the dirt. Art is such an immersive yet underminded discipline in society especially when it is compared to being an engineer, doctor, or lawyer. Moreover, those of you that will say that Art shouldn’t be compared stop. It will be compared and very competitive because we live in a capitalist society here in America; capitalism is the definition of competition. I don’t know sometimes I feel on top of the world and other days I feel like it is a worthless career. I’ve been in school for over 2 years and I’ve been practicing art for about 5 years now but I do believe being intrinsically passionate about Art has kept me committed which you should be with anything in life. I just aspire to reap the fruits of my labor someday within the creativity space any suggestions pertaining to securing a career in art besides having a portfolio, networking, or getting an education (I’ve heard it and I am currently living it). Maybe something along the lines of some unique job boards, contests, or lucrative paths to follow such as Architecture, UX, or Acting? Any leads at all would be greatly appreciated!

Whats going on will. New to the channel. Is it posibble that I have already been doing this recently? For context, I have been tinkering with wallpapers I see and collect on the internet. I end up editing them through a process until I reach a mark where I think looks appealing to me and is at least different compared to the original. As of late, I have also been tinkering with A.I generators to create some decent images. The prcoess of mind maping involves description, based of what you used as an example in the video with the cup. I think I do this when trying to get an accurate detail for whatever image I want generated. I have my prompt, I will attemp to decribe the image I have the generator refrencing from or create a brand new image using as much descriptive deatailng. Dose this count as mind mapping? Also regarding the wallpaper edits, such as photoshop, does this count towrds mind mapping as well? Thanks.

Don't worry, filter apps already existed 15 years ago, but Photoshop users never dissapeared, also companies who want to be Taken seriously Will never use a logo generator and normally have their own graphic designers team. Only small business who are starting would use these cheap apps because they cannot afford a real graphic designer but because they want to cut cost their logos and publicity are not cohesive, plus AI mostly affect the ones who become the artist type of way, the one that does cute faces with digital paint, but cannot affect those graphic designers who are functional and resolver problems for its clients.

My advice has always been to buy what you can within your budget, a second hand laptop is better than nothing, but obviously will not run as smoothly as the latest and fastest PCs and MacBooks, but everyone has varying budgets, so it's hard to actually set a base level of what would or wouldn't work, as second hand tech could run super slow depending on how old it is and how it was looked after before you bought it. Sorry that probably doesn't help too much!

Though I'm young and might be over thinking it a little (probably too much), I just want to make sure what I want is what I want. so, I would appreciate some advice. thank you for Ur Presious time. and my apologies.

No you don't, I was asking myself that question because im pretty atrocious, sure it can help to create ideas on paper, but if you know what you want, it doesn't matter because the Adobe suite doesn't need you to be good at drawing.

Hi, got a question. Due to a physical disability I’m on a journey to find a new career path and I’ve been thinking on Graphic Designer as an option. However my biggest concern is that I’m not good at drawing/sketching. I’ve work with design in the past such as events and home interior and always rely on software or images inspo on the web. I fear that not having drawing as a skill will put me in a disadvantage not only in my studies but also on the work force. Can I become a graphic designer without knowing how to draw?

Without knowing your general design skills it's difficult to give a yes or no answer, but it is possible to design without being excellent at drawing. It helps, certainly and it can also be learned but it's not essential at all, especially when you're starting out :) Good luck to you!

It doesn't need a video, it's simpler than you think. I would search it online or ask a legal professional as I can't give legal advice :)

I think I would rather walk on hot asphault at high noon in a Texas summer than logo design... - and, of course, any type of "drawing" it's just not my forte.

I'd like to enforce the notion that you should specialise and become very good at one thing but the sad truth is that will not work for everyone in all parts of the world. Where I come from if you want to work you will have to diversify. People will try to hire as less people as possible and if you will only get the job if you can do more than "just" logo design. I have to be an illustrator, web designer, logo designer, UX and UI designer, etc. to even get a chance at work.

This is so true. Being cross-functional has been a significant skill in the industry but there's always a core specialization point. Like your core competency would be either illustrating while also having skills in web designing or animation. I think that's what he meant by that. Specialize in one thing but also have certain bits of skills in other area. That is I would say what cross-functional is.
