Thank you all for the great feedback and thanks to Will and Naomi for the opportunity! This was a fun project that allowed me to color “outside the lines” as opposed to what I usually do with my clients who are more conservative about what they want. And I usually spend hours and hours on research alone on a logo for a client, including some sketching, multiple concepts and brand research (and charge way more of course), this was a more fun and quick project that I worked directly on Illustrator. I agree with every single critique from Will, thank you for being an inspiration for a long time. And I gotta admit, Mo Borbon won this one 🔥

If I paid 500 for someone to use the star tool inside of a letter I would definitely be upset. Also the combination of both including the jetsons and the idea of having a predominantly 70’s mood board as the representation of the “future” makes the entire project look like a joke. I agree that the Mo Borbon is the only one I would have been satisfied with and the only one that deserved much more than the value paid!

@@Truen091 I agree that Mo's was the best but I dug Miftah's as well. The only concern I would have with his is the fact that that the extended letters are a very current trend and will likely be out in the near future which may make his brand feel dated in a few years. Arnold's icon was nice but I didn't care for the typeface. The legs on those R's bothered me.

@@Truen091 I agree that Mo Borbons logo is the best one, but I think your first sentence doesnt make a lot of sense. You don't only pay for the execution of a logo. That part is easy for many of the greates, most timeless logos out there. Developing a decent, working concept/idea that fits the brief but can be simplified enough is the difficult part. If you'd pay someone by the amount of tools in illustrator they used, you'd probably get terrible results xD

500$ logo designer missed the brief completly, just solely to follow recent 50's design trend. As a designers, we have to solve problems which are stated in brief. I know it's tempting to make something aesthetically pleasing - I fell in that trap many times, but by doing this we tend to create new branding problems. Miftah really nailed this one, everything is in the right place, because he followed the brief. He should be paid more.

The extended letters on Miftah's art is also a recent design trend, although I do agree, his hit the mark pretty well. I'm still partial to Mo's design. His design was clever and the iconography and colors were spot on.

The 500$ really confused me because if she was going for a Jetsons look, there are many great options for retro-futuristic/space-age typography, instead she went for late 60s-70s typography, when The Jetsons are from the early 60s.
@WDSimp3 жыл бұрын
You keep mentioning wanting to use red for Mars and I think that would be a mistake. In space travel, colors are often selected for the purpose of high visibility. The white space suits and ships against the black of space, the orange landing suits are easily to spot during water landings. With that in mind, my first instinct with a Mars-focused brief like this one would be to head to the opposite side of the color wheel. See if we can get some bright greens and blues working so the design really pops not only in space, but also when contrasted against the red planet.
@NerdJam3 жыл бұрын
This is a great thought, and definitely something that (if this was a real client) you could try and convince them of during the process.
@CJonesApple2 жыл бұрын
I think that's the difference between an appealing design and appropriate design. A red/orange is kind of obvious but at the same time I would expect it in a Mars design. Maybe if/when we do colonise Mars we would be sick of every Martian adjacent service having it and that contrasting blue would be welcome. That's too many layers deep in conscious thought. In a real life 2121 yes to blue, in our hypothetical 2021 then go for the red before any other colour.

To say everyone did all of this in 3 hours is crazy! It takes me hours to decide on a typeface, that might even be customised. And colours. They sketched, drafted, researched, chose fonts and colour palettes, created documents, mock-ups and mock landing pages? This is a woooow. Thanks for sharing! I always find the cheaper ones, feel like they have to prove something or feel that they aren’t worth more and then produce amazing work to combat that and prove or evidence why your idea is like that. Which is cool and confident (but not if coming from a place of insecurity) Guys. Raise your prices if you’re going to be doing all that, raise them. It’s a lot of work. The 500 dollars, was beautiful but didn’t hit the brief and still didn’t explain how she got there at all. I would agree that the $500 seems like it might be following a current trend of 'retro' design, but it was absolutely unique. And that's worth something. In a time when there's a space delivery company between earth and mars, won't every logo out there for any company feature something space-related? Won't everyone have that 'futuristic' look and futuristic typography? It's going to become cliche very quickly. Most of the others went with corporate sterility and the 'perfect' design shown on the big screen since the 80s with it's threatening, controlling, objectionable, anything-goes-for-profit mindsets that made things like the uncaring Weyland-Yutani the ideal megacorporation of the dystopian cyberpunk future. They all knew what they were applying for and all agreed to the time limit - all of them were a pleasure to work with and I enjoyed emailing back and forth with them :) Hopefully as the channel grows one day we’ll be able to pay 5 people full price for an entire branding project, but for now we’ve got to balance the cost and come to what we think is a good compromise :)

imo 1st place for arnold. 2nd for Mo, since they both have a really good graps of the brief and its appeals to me. 3rd place would be Melvin with some small edits, then miftah and last Jessica. I would only give her last place on the fact that for me it misses the main concept of the branding and it feels retro more then futuristic nice logo nonetheless

I also want to share my thoughts. I ll put logos from the least successful to the most. 3d logo for $200: Looks like an icon and therefore just dull and not modern. Also just not beautiful, to me looks very busy. 1st logo for $100: Has more individuality compared to the one for $200. The concept is pretty nice-using two planets in high contrast. However, I think it would be better if Mars was more heavy then Earth. It is logical, as goods drop in Mars, so mars is heavy. This would add more balance to the logo. Also just not very appealing. 5th logo for $500: Looks amazing, great for food deliveries but doesn’t signal for high-tech stuff. So it is misleading, although has nice personality. 2d logo for $150: Looks clean, has a futuristic vibe. But it signals of hi-tech, expensive things, like Tesla. However delivered goods can be everything like food or kitchen stuff. I thing something more universal would fit. 4th logo for $250: the best option among those in my opinion. It signals that it is a delivery service, any product can be under a package with this logo. However, the design is busy and not so appealing to one’s eye, $150 and $500 look better. But it would work for the company.

Mo Borbon’s design all the way. He made it work in various color presentations, a “complex” and “simple” version, and clearly captured the idea in the icon.

That second Solar Drop logo, would have been phenomenal with some jet flames coming out of the D of Drop. It looks like a rocket on its side.
@lordkrym3 жыл бұрын
I think he was going for a more simplistic type font so a putting jet flames wouldn't really work. Nice idea though.
@zelaznydesigns8743 жыл бұрын
Maybe for an animated logo for marketing, but it being more simplistic is better

I agree with this. Doing that with the D was actually one of the ideas I had but figured it would take me over the 3 hour challenge to execute well.

@@melvinsoto I struggle to see how a lot of these are completed in 3 hours. Maybe I'm just a slow assed designer, but I have shit loads of experience and know how long artworking and mockups take.

The first thing that I noticed with the 200$ logo by Arnold at 10:33 was that there are 2 planets on the same orbit which is physically not possible. It is probably done for balance but my scientific side immediately notices it and makes it impossible to ignore. If this was a logo for a company that has anything to do or employs with a background in astronomy, this would potentially be a huge red flag

On the second one that has the stretched D, they should have stretched the D and the P and centered the RO. It would have made it way more aesthetically pleasing. It’s too off center for me. That’s all I can think about when I see it. I didn’t really hear shit he said about the logo, it’s all on the design lol. As an artist, it could just be my way of thinking. Who knows. All I do know though is it fucks the whole thing up for me
@emerys95393 жыл бұрын
In a time when we have interplanet travel... you really think san serifs are still going to be seen as "futuristic"? I like the idea of the 60s, psychedelic font. It achieves one of the most important things you need for a brand and that is to STAND OUT.
@ChannieVee2 жыл бұрын
Sans serif has been around since the 1800s, so while it certainly may not be popular in future years, it has been very stable over the past couple hundred years :) It’s more likely a fundamental font like that would age better than a psychedelic font. That’s just my personal design opinion though. But I agree that it stands out that most and is super aesthetically pleasing. I loved that logo the most, but I agree with others it’s not what comes to mind when I think of futuristic planetary travel haha

I think what Jessica was going for was novelty. It isn't futuristic at all, but your description was science-fiction-esc, and the Jetsons are also science fiction. Here's what I think (this is just my opinion and I am basing this purely off of looks): $100 - 10/10, I love the typography, the circles. Overall it's clean and 'homely'. $150 - 5/10, I didn't really like this one, it is futuristic but I don't like how it looks, the D looks weird, and for a company that's sending things to your home, this one isn't homely. $250 - 10/10, this looks great. I like orange more so i'm gonna rank the $100 logo above it :) $299 - 9/10, this logo looks great but looks kinda like Google Maps. If Google owned Solar Drop, this logo would be 10/10. $500 - 7/10, I like the font but not the star.
