I’m a CAT dealer field mechanic, do not waste your money on school. You can get all the information completely free. You need the discipline and the curiosity to study on your own. Great mechanics don’t know every detail about every machine… they know how to utilize resources and their understanding of fundamental scientific principles to solve any problem.

Do you deal with any electric trucks bro? Here in cali no more diesel trucks in 2035 I believe. I feel like school might be necessary in the future with these electric trucks. I need answers bro. Is mechatronic classes or computer classes necessary for the future
@Dcalvert92
@Dcalvert92 2 ай бұрын
@@crush9197 No diesel by 2035 is a pipe dream, it won’t happen. What is feasible and what we currently deal with are diesel engines coupled with generators and electric drive trains. These machines are too heavy and have too much power demand to be fully electric with batteries. The battery would have to be massive to operate a CAT 992 and the run time would be so low, it’s pointless. Electricity is one of the areas you absolutely need to master to become a mechanic. Again, I just don’t believe school is necessary. I’ve learned it all on the internet and doing it hands on.

There's a sweet spot for field service. Before kids or after they are grown. When you have small children it's tough. I would recommend that people learn as much as possible about electronics. We will never seen equipment coming out with less electronics. It's here to stay. I deal with electrical issues every single day. I find that many guys just throw up their hands and walk away from electrical problems.

I wanna do something similar i am a welder and I live in a very rural area welding jobs have pretty much dried up around me cause now a couple of quarries I've welding for have build 20k steel buildings and just teach there mechanics to run a little mig or 7018 and make thatll do welds so basically field mechanics have taken alot of jobs if you can't beat em join em why pay a mobile welder 500$ to do some hardfacing or something when you can pay your hourly mechanic 25$ for an hour of work so I can see the reasoning I hate to say it but welders are not as needed as everyone thinks any mechanic can learn very quickly to properly fix the minor issues they have in the field even most major ones if they have a shop at the sight

I started working on my own trucks for 8 years then transitioned to working as a shop mechanic. That experience finally led to getting yellow iron experience. I kept growing and learning on the heavy equipment side and worked on Belt link cranes and diesel forklifts like pettybones. I must say having tractor trailer experience definitely helped when I started getting into hydraulics and wiring schematics. We had an in-house welding department that I worked closely with but I did manage to get some welding of my own done, mostly cutting out hydraulic arms we couldn’t order from our bone yard equipment. Good times and fond memories (especially when the tool trucks showed up)

Good channel. I appreciate the video. I worked in automotive for 8 years and went to a diesel shop working both in the shop and in the field depending on the day. Starting on cars and light trucks definitely gives you a jump start into heavy stuff if you’re undecided, especially the electrical and emissions stuff. I get a broad mix of work from light duty trucks, to skid steers, to over the road trucks, to large loaders. Every day is different, and it sure beats standing in a bay at a dealer fixing someone’s broken Prius. Keep up the good work.

40 years in the business, I'm 75 now, retired: I pretty much avoided the rock quarry end of it. I worked in dirt. HRD/W. work smart,, way easy to be injured in this trade, many don't stay in it. fest and famine at times. It isn't a 9 to 5 operation. High rollers, go 24 24, The Company doesn't make money off the mechanic / welder , off the equipment that is producing the wanted product, that machine fails, and momma wont see a check if the old man isn't in the seat earning the wage that machine draws in. Bid jobs are tougher. I worked on pretty much everything thrown at us. A lot of the machinery of today, Cat didn't produce. Working in rock wasn't something they wanted to deal with, but all that is changed.

The Sany equipment I have experience with is hit and miss. The excavators are very basic. Built in China, but put together with good components (Cummins engine, Kawasaki pumps, etc.) Customers don't really have any major complaints. The cranes on the other hand...are junk in my opinion. We have two 65 ton rough terrain cranes that are always so F***ed up we can't even send them out to customers. They were delivered to us, brand new, with some serious safety concerns. Factory service support is non-existent. Parts availability is not good. Just my 2 cents.

@@heavymetalmechanicX wait until they are a year old,at least with the ones we have , from 13 tons to 40 tons,they are junk,the cooling system for the Cummins is far too small and anything over 21 tons can't sprag and sany says this is fine and the rust on the panels for a one and a half year old machine is terrible,and sany are not interested,yeah they are really cheap but that comes at a price, good to hear from you again, take care.

I went thru Ag/diesel school @ Montana state. Jumped in the millwright Union as I can make $200k year working turbines for Siemens and have 6 months off. Plus I don’t have to drop belly pans in the mud. To each their own. In my humble opinion diesel school doesn’t get a future mechanic ready to work on anything but engines and transmissions. The heavy rigging and welding etc to pull booms counterweights buckets tracks etc isn’t taught at all in HE school. Love the vid

Not every millwright makes 200k and not every diesel mechanic drops belly pans in the mud outside in sideways rain. Let's use context here. Some diesel mechanics make more than 200k, have 6 months off, and hardly get dirty, too.

I’m a mechanic in the Navy right now. I work on Aviation Support Equipment which is includes diesel, hydraulics, electrical, and gas/turbine. Been trying to figure out which field is most suitable to capitalize upon my skills I’ve learned as a mechanic in the military. My question for you is do you see a lot of experience mechanics work in this field after leaving the military? Where do they start? Does their experience put them ahead at all in pay and seniority? Or would I be starting at the bottom again?
@offroadwrench5752
@offroadwrench5752 3 жыл бұрын
First off. Thank you for your service. I do know of a few military mechanics who have transitioned to the private sector. Follow your desire. If its boats, go towards the marine sector of the industry. If its aviation, stay in the aviation. If its the support equipment than stay there by finding an airport or airline. As far as pay and seniority, I can only speak as if I was hiring you. Seniority would be at the bottom because you would be starting a new job. Pay wise, I would start you out as high as I could based on your implied knowledge. I believe that veterans should be compensated as they return to civilian life. Beyond the initial hiring date, its on you to prove you're worth the raises.

I've learned all my rigging, leverage, assembling and tooling techniques in a shop...working on 15+ton pieces. Once I went into the field, and outdoors I had the advantage by far and I found out how many guys prefer the field because they're lazy. It gives them the chance to walk around, kill time by intentionally forgetting things, driving company trucks in circles all day etc. It was sad really.

what are the differences of jobs you get when you work in the feild vs the shop?
@offroadwrench5752
@offroadwrench5752 3 жыл бұрын
When it comes to heavy equipment. Shop jobs vs field jobs tend to be the difference of a heavy haul bill. Both technicians will get the same jobs. But if lowbedding to the shop makes more sense than multiple trips to the field, than a shop technician will get the big jobs. Field jobs tend to be more diagnostic and troubleshooting.

Thanks for sharing. I got a question here: of all the issues you see, what type of percentage are electrical related? Are you going to fix those as well or you only take care of the mechanical issues? Thanks!
@offroadwrench5752
@offroadwrench5752 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Currently its probably around 30-35% electrical issues. Thats looking at the whole picture of what I do. As a fleet manager who does the mechanics as well. I am responsible for all the repairs. As a field mechanic, my background is the troubleshooting of the problems. It was very common for me to have a multimeter out daily. If it wasn't a hydraulic issue. If it wasn't a broken part that visibly damaged. I was testing electrical. So, as a dealer field tech on todays equipment, I would guesstimate the percentage of electrical repair to be above 50%. And also, yes, I do all the repairs that I am capable of. Yesterday I even fixed a flat tire on a skidder.
