I own several quilts from Enlightened Equipment. I have a Zero degree Enigma and a 20,30 degree Revelation quilts. Con to the Revelation is the zipper will pinch the material and I hate the draw string in the middle of my face. Pro is you can unzip it and use it as a true quilt on warmer nights. Mostly here in Alabama I use the 30 degree and add a sleeping liner from Sea to Summit. They have different weights of liners which can add 5-15 degrees to the quilt. Cheaper option than going to a zero degree quilt. The way you add the extra blanket to your 20 degree is the ticket to keeping warm. The less clothes you sleep in will warm the air and keep you much warmer than adding layers of clothes. So less clothes, adding a liner or another blanket to your quilt equals warmer nights. Great points my friend! Yeah, I have layered quilt and my Get Out Gear den blanket for a while. I went to the Smokies a few weeks ago and it got down to 19 degrees…that zero was warm and toasty…I was serious about my blood thinning or whatever…I just sleep cold as years for by. I hate being cold at night…I hear ya…In Alabama…most of the time, a 30 degree bag is all you need. Appreciate your wonderful comments, as always. Crow✌️

@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING the older I get the warmer I sleep. I like my 20 degree overall for fall, winter and spring. My rule of thumb if it is 40 I sleep in a 30 degree quilt. If it is 30 I sleep in my 20 degree quilt. Hope you have a wonderful week!

Being in the military and an avid hiker before my son was born, I never knew about lightweight sleeping bags and packs. I just recently learned about quilts too! And it's an absolute total game changer from ordinary sleeping bags or the military sleep system. Gotta be smarter as we grow older, and I agree about the length and the width. Great info Crow! Thats a lot of stuff to get through. We ended up going with UGQ for me and RMMommas Quilts. We went with 10 degrees. So far that has worked great for us! RMSiblings are using the Aegismax. Getting cold.... one of the wonderful things about getting older!! My feet are always cold, looking into those down booties to take care of that.

Just took advantage off EE's holiday sales to pick up a summer quilt to add to my collection. Recently moved to a hammock and went with the 50degree 950 fill Enigma. I love my EE quilts! I have a couple revelation quilts and found I never opened the foot box. I have found that I can get within about 5 degrees of temp rating before I start getting cold to were I need to start adding layers of clothing with my EE quilts.

Great info! It became apparent this fall that I too am just getting old and also crazy and I’m a cold sleeper!! I pulled the trigger on a zero degree EE Conundrum and I’m hoping to have it in time for New Year trip to do a section on the AT in North Carolina. I have the Zpacks 10 degree full zip which I LOVE, but I needed.a bit more last trip when night temp hit 25. 🥶

Hi Crow, great video 👍 I had a similar experience with cold recently in my latest video using the Thermarest Corus 20. I had seen reviews about cold spots prior to buying but required a quilt none the less. Quilts don't appear to be in fashion too much in UK as hikers and campers still prefer the traditional sleeping bag. I plan on doing a similar video soon to share my disappointment at the Thermarest. We too use an EE quilt. We use the 20 degree revelation - sometimes with a Sea to Summit liner if needed. The Enlightened Equipment quilts are well worth the money!

Buy an enlightened Apex 50 degree synthetic to put over your 20degree and it will turn into a 0 degree. The benefit is that you would have a 20 degree quilt, 0 degree with both put together and a 50 degree for hot weather. Also, using a 50 degree synthetic over the 20 degree quilt will protect your down quilt from condensation and frost.

Great video Brad! Glad to see you made a decision that you're comfortable with. EE has a great rep! I have my 20 deg from UGQ, amazing quilt. Kind of glad you didn't go with Zpacks. 7d materials and sky high prices. Don't think they're made to last. I just got a 30 deg from OV, which is closer to a 40 deg comfort quilt. I believe EE is also survival rated. I like UGQ's options the best, they're also very competitive on pricing.

This yr UGQ didn't do a Black Friday sale, I was bummed. So I went for the OV quilt b/c it was in stock. UGQ has some great rates, cheaper than EE and yes, the quality is superb. I did wait 10 wks to get it after the Black Friday sale tho, yikes! I think that's another reason why you went with EE. Take care bud!

Nice looking quilt. That will be my next big purchase. My last was an underquilt from Hammock Gear. Currently using a sleeping bag as a quilt. That is I partially unzip it and put it over me as a quilt and I still have a footbox. The weather dictates the sleeping bag. I have several inexpensive bags depending on that the temps going to be. Would be nice to have a decent topguilt and maybe get rid of some of the extra bags.

I went with hammock gear due to good reviews, color choice, & price (on sale & coupon). I have a 20* Outdoor vitals Aeries 5 in 1 that I used as an underquilt and pod for my hammock. With the purchase of the 10* HG underquilt, the Aeries has become my topquilt during colder weather. I'm a hot sleeper and have been comfortable in temps below the ratings for most of my quilts/bags.

I still use a sleeping bag for some of the very reasons you mentioned. I don’t zip up the bag but sleep under it like a quilt but the bag has so much extra width so I can toss and turn without as many drafts. Also, my bags have an enclosed foot box and a draft collar. I’ve considered removing the draw cord for the hood but haven’t done it. The bag is heavier than a quilt because it’s so wide without being zipped up but I worry that the quilt won’t be wide enough for all the tossing and turning I do. Having said all that, I wish I could have the courage to order a quilt but I’m afraid it would be money poorly spent (see what I did there?). 🦑

I love my quilt I have a down sleeping bag that I converted to one. Like you I don't like being in a bag. I bought a Sea 2 Summit Ember 2 XL which is good down to -2 C. It works well with my S2S thermolite +8 C liner

Backpacking quilts are almost unknown here in Norway, so really interesting to hear your talk about it. I can imagine that I would be very happy with a quilt in summer here in the north, so I will do some research in the dark of winter based on what you talked about! I am not sure if I would try it in winter before I have some experience, but I might one day. As for down; it is important to remember that if it gets wet it will not keep you warm! So it must always be packed in a watertight bag if you are out in cold rain!

Good point about the down in the wet…I should have mentioned that for people considering the difference between down and synthetic. That is crucial to know when dealing with wet weather. I would think the cold you guys get in the winter is something I haven’t even seen here in the Southeast US. I would think a bag would be more appropriate in that weather. I'll be honest - I grew up in Ohio and have lived in NC 20+ years. It just does not get cold here to me.. I have a 45 degree Kammok quilt that I can use down to about freezing. I have a 20 degree bag, but like others I value movement, it's an Xtra wide bag and I end up unzipping it most of the time. I have really gotten away from it. I also have a 10 degree HG quilt that is typically one of my kids under-quilt, as they are both hammock campers. I rarely use it. So yes, there are a lot of personal preferences as well as 'where are you going to use it' questions that come into play.

I'm looking at buying the Enlightened Equipment Enigma or Revelation. I'm concerned that the Revelation's footbox with the zipper and draw-strings might be cold but I like the versatility that it provides as opposed to the Enigma's sewn footbox. Any comments on the Revelations footbox? thanks

That is the real question. For me, I have never used the revelation’s option to unzip it. So, that is why I went with the Enigma on the second quilt I purchased from them. If you think you will use the unzip option, I would say, get the Revelation. If you want extra warmth, get the Enigma. The foot box of the Enigma is awesome for me. 😊✌️

Yah, EE’s time on a custom down is 8 and sometimes 10 weeks. It is my only complaint. Since I have ordered 7 quilts from them, I have wait months for delivery on everyone of them.

Yeah, I have not been impressed with their customer service. I bought their Torrid Jacket and ripped it the first trip. I’ll have a video coming out on it. But, I’m actually done with them now. I have really liked these quilts though. Crow✌️

I was torn between the EE 20° and the UGQ 20°. Ultimately, I went with the UGQ 20° Bandit 850 fill. I got the draft collar, overstuffed, dynamic tension control, drawstring foot box, and an extra pad strap. I went with the UGQ over the EE, simply because the UGQ quilts are actually comfort rated, and the EE quilts are survival rated. ~ Elise from "In Our Element" :D

That is a good decision Elise! Yeah, that is a good point with the comfort rating versus survival rating. I think the UGQ quilts are amazing. I think people get too hung up on "comfort" or "survival" and don't ask the real questions: What is the baffle height, and percentage of overstuff? So, for your UGQ, what is the baffle height for that 20°? I know for a fact that EE's baffle height is 2.5" for a 20° quilt. EE also "overstuffs" the quilts 30%. What is UGQ's overstuff percentage? Last, what is the overall weight of the quilt?

@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING --not that you need me to tell you this, but for the greater audience, the thing people don't realize about ratings is that a rating is determined ultimately by loft. So if UGQ has a 2.5" baffle for their 20°, and EE has the 2.5" baffle for their 20°, you know you're comparing apples to apples - provided the filler (down) has the fillpower and correct amount of material to achieve the specified loft.

I too looked at all these cottage companies extensively and ultimately went with UGQ and never looked back. The deal breaker with Enlightened Equipment was they do not have a tension control system which prevents drafts when tossing and turning and their silly draft collar pull string is up against your neck which I found alot of negative comments. UGQ was smart to design it behind the bag. Ultimately I chose function over weight savings. My sleep is more important.

Absolutely! They were originally designed for hammock camping. People started using them as bags, like I do, when they realized you don’t need any bulk underneath you. It gets compressed anyway. Lots of great options on the market right now. Lots of cottage venders. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️

Can you tell me up to what HIGH temperature you find your 20-Degree Revelation quilt comfortable, i.e. not too hot?

Good question. I live in the Southeast (Alabama). The temperatures get warm pretty early in the spring. It depends on how you sleep...cold/hot...I sleep very cold. I typically get cold before other people. So, for me, I usually just carry a down blanket...I did a review of the one I use, the Get Out Gear down blanket...when the temperatures get up to around 45-50 degrees at night. Below 45-50 degrees, for me, I use the 20 degree bag. If it gets down to around 25 degrees, for me (because I sleep cold), I take the zero degree bag. I hope this helps...but, It all depends on how you sleep. Crow

I got the 10 D. I think it is durable enough for me. ✌️ I hear ya on the aging thing. It is all part of the adventure. 😂✌️

Green💸 and 🪙Gold are good to have for sure. I've had same thought to prepare for winter camping. So I purchased a long and wide 0°F quilt from OV through their introductory sale during the summer. Haven't had a chance to use it yet. Still using few years old OV 20°F sleeping bag.
