Tuning it is actually not that hard, use a si/efi intake manifold anf throttle body, bolt up a supercharger and throw a nice catburator on top of that. As long as the carb can supply enough fuel for the boost you are OK.

Make sure to run a wire through the sunroof drain holes. They clog easy. Also, if the power antenna goes bad, its super easy to replace. My ex-wife had one too and it was a really sweet ride.

My 84 prelude was an unbreakable tank! And trust me of and my friends tried! I drove it every where! When I bought mine it had 250K and the speedometer was broken so who knows what the actual milage was but it just kept going and going! I sold it dirt cheap and the new owner drove it passed my house every day, day after day ! I bet he I found it and put a new battery and 4 plugs it would run!!!

Tail lights and the light bar in-between them on the later ones cant easily be swapped because the boot lid is different shape too. Water in the trunk is likely rubbish in the tubes from the sunroof. If you remove the side cover material on the boot you can find the tubes and pull them off and clean out the end. Also fixes water getting into the sun roof when parked on certain angles which can then pour over you when you drive off.

Almost got one as my first car, it ended up to be a 1988 vw golf mk2 instead. I'm happy with it because I like old golf's alot (civics too) an in Europe they're just super cheap to maintain, very cheap to insure and taxes are low. (Honda's and proper parts for . aren't as cheap here as in the US.) Anyway, I'm still kinda sad tho, there were multiple 3rd gen preludes for sale within my budget. And it's still one of the best looking rides in the world imo.

I’ve had very little luck with women, strange phantom leaks and a bouncing idle that comes and goes when it pleases. I have an 89 prelude 2L- SI, and I LOVE to drive it. Hate to work on it, because I don’t have tiny little HANDS! But it IS reliable. Take it from me, take it to an alignment shop!! Changing out the upper & lower ball joints, control arm bushings, inner & putter tie rods and drive axles was a big PAIN in my ass!! The axles pass thru the damper fork, and must be separated. I had to cut the bolt off, pound out the two studs, get my “blue wrench” and melt the rubber bushings, cut a groove inside and hammer out the steel sleeve with a cold chisel. My 20 ton shop press was able to press in the new ones, but would NOT press out the old ones! They have been in there for 31 years!

In 1990 i bought a 1982 model for just under 2 grand. I did a little work on it, change the rims, gave it a paint job, change the clutch and drove it for almost 100 thousand miles before i donated it. The only problem i had was in the winters. In NY a carbonated engine takes some effort to get going but once it does, it will run forever.

on my 1989 prelude, I made a custom intake and put a Ford 2bbl carburetor on it. This got rid of basically every vacuum line except the ones required to run my brakes and steering systems. The throttle response has gone down but this new design is so much more efficient than the stock dual carbs.
@ConnorLee
@ConnorLee 4 жыл бұрын
Throttle response isnt the end of the world. How hard was it to make the intake manifold
@baby_dick_bandit8337
@baby_dick_bandit8337 4 жыл бұрын
@@ConnorLee It was pretty difficult. I had the make the intake out of 1/8" 6061 aluminum because any other metal couldn't handle the heat of the motor. Aluminum is a very hard metal to weld/work with. Also angling was somewhat difficult because the motor is slanted back at 18° plus there isn't a lot it space to being with. It's a tight fit but it works. Aside from that, it was pretty standard. Making the runners and mounting bracket was straight forward. Also the Carb I chose to run is an autolite 2100 in case you were wondering

Yeah the trunk seal and light seals/ design was prone to leaking. Literally 99% of 3rd gens I've seen up close had issues with leaking/ rust in the trunk area. Easy fix tho but parts are getting harder to find. I've owned 3 so far, all with 4WS and all automatic. This 91' I just got has a auto tranny that actually works! It shifts so smooth it's crazy! I just mash the pedal and it downshifts then takes off like the millenial falcon in warp speed. I love the auto tbh

Notes about the SI/B20A5 -> B20A5 can be bored over and rebuilt, and you can buy remanufactured top-ends for them from summit racing, and larger pistons from honda. The B21 has a fiber mesh cylinder wall, and its my understanding you cannot simply bore them over. B20's respond well to boost, but there is no VTEC options at all. There is a member on one of the prelude forums that modified his to accept VTEC with a different head (Guy is an expert/professional). IMO Try try try to get the B20A5, they are tanks. I'm daily driving one with 225k miles on and it and it runs like a top. Also the SIs are dual overhead cam set ups and are very sweet engines. Also, download the service manual-- They are online-- Same ones that the dealership techs used, youll learn how to rebuild/fix/take-apart EVERYTHING on the car. Its saved my behind many many many times. Also youre not wrong about the simplicity of the vehicle, you can literally disassemble the entire interior with a Philips head screwdriver. But you are correct, upgrade/modification paths are very resistant/0 - But maintenance items are still available for it from many retailers (like summit/rock auto). You may cringe at the idea that these are hard to support/maintain, but you will fall in love with the car, and theres always options for them, you just may have to work a little harder at it. Get acquainted with the online prelude forums, theres dudes supporting and keeping up to date information on how to do virtually everything on the car. Love your videos on your lude, keep rocking it, If I had your car and not my SI, id do the same thing youre doing, enjoy the car, they are amazing, you don't need to go fast in these things, you just enjoy the beauty and simplicity of them-- And they still can get up and go when your foot gets heavy. Love the lude videos man, you give me many ideas for mine.

I bought a 1 owner, 50k mile one of these in the mid 2000's for $350 US, they were going for nothing in New Zealand back then. It was a family friend who had owned it since new and had maintained it perfectly. It was kept in a garage it's entire life and looked brand new. Some car dealer low balled him $500 NZ for a trade in so let me have it for that. Everything was up to date, recent oil change, it didn't even need air in the tyres. I remember it had a digital instrument cluster (the revs were represented by a series of colored bars and the speedo was a digital) and an electric sun roof. It must have felt like being in KITT from Knight Rider if you bought one brand new, peak 80's.

awesome video! nice to see new content of these cars online still coming up. your motor, the b20a3 (engine code can be found on the front of the engine block next to the transmission) can be fitted with aftermarket motorcycle carburetors. the stock keihin carbs on that motor are adapted from a motorcycle that honda used to make in the 80’s. the downside to those carbs is that there are some rubber seals within those carbs that deteriorate from certain components found in modern gasoline, making the downfall of those keihins inevitable. shouldn’t be a problem for a long long time so i wouldnt worry about it. also, do not under any circumstances, break the thermowax valve on the thermostat because they are old and brittle and made of the weakest plastic on earth. it’s a critical part for that motor to idle and throttle properly. i also bought the last one in the country brand new from honda and accidentally broke it when i was installing it :( S model preludes are wired completely differently and have a different fuel system set up than fuel injected preludes. if any fuel injected motor were to be swapped into that chassis, the entire car would need to be taken apart to swap out the interior wiring, engine wiring, and fuel system as well (this includes the gas tank). a k motor would be great to have in these cars but height clearance is an issue. either the hood would need to be cut or the car be raised up higher than stock height. custom mounts and wiring would need to be made too. super expensive!! a b series or h series swap has the most aftermarket support in terms of this chassis. the sway bar from the integra is actually a C-pillar bar. aftermarket rear sway bars (23mm) can be bought from MustardCat, and they make a dramatic improvement to handling! definitely recommend buying one👍

........These cars really are something special. Their official claim to fame being that they had the lowest hood on a front wheel drive production car. They love the highway ...happy to cruise at 185 kph without a hint of distress. In town, a pleasure to drive...they handle like a dream. When buying one....check behind the rear bumper as it's mounts tend to dissolve, especially in snowy parts of the globe. If they are rotten it's a relatively easy fix but if you point it out you may save a few bucks on your offer. Buy the 70 amp fuse it takes and keep it in the car. One day, when it won't start....totally dead....start your trouble shooting by switching out that fuse. The trick is ...to have it already ...and have it handy. I had two of these...I had no real issues. I had the regular motors (A1B2?)......on my last one I added a cold air intake and I "unobstructed" the exhaust.....she became a deep breather ...and the increase in power was noticeable.

Fyi, the sway bar is under the car and helps to control body roll. I think you had strut bar in mind, but that isn’t a strut bar either. More of a chassis stiffener in this case. Or c pillar bar. Super clean car though. And I’d be surprised if you have that car long enough to need a replacement engine.

First car after graduating college was a charcoal grey 1991 Honda Prelude 2.0SI. I panicked when a minor electrical problem stranded me and me 6 month son on the highway in Texas in 2000. Absolutely, the single biggest mistake that I ever made in my life when I traded that car in. That car was purrrrrrfect!!!
