Careful with some of the import companies. Many companies pull some shady cards importing total jalopes from Australia. Already talked to two people who’ve gotten ripped off, one ordered an r33 gtst from Japanese Classics (engine and transmission needed a complete rebuild) and the other RHD Specialties from the Seattle area. Both of them paying upwards of 20k for their imports. PLEASE UPVOTE THIS SO OTHERS COULD SEE 🙏

With buying any used car, especially something from another country you need to have certain expectations. Clearly engine/trans should be good, but people need to realize no matter what these are PROJECT cars and will likely need tons of maintenance regardless of what the importer says

Short version: Use a well known importer!!! October I purchased my 94 WRX straight from japan. The problem that I had was I used an importer that was so confident in themselves and they told me they could get it here for less than 6k so I took that offer. After purchasing the car the boat kept getting delayed. Eventually the boat sailed and I had to use the broker. The broker costed me ~$600. So far we are at $6400 not even seeing this car. My car made it to the port December 22nd but didn’t clear customs until January 6th. Went to pick it up with my very “legal” temporary plate ($150) all to come to the greatest news of all... the car does not run. I was told by the company that the car ran great (yes I know make sure you get a video. I will next time) so I had to call myself a tow truck. 2 hours later the tow truck came ($300) to get the car back home now. So after that the car was home for 2 weeks before I found a mechanic to work on it. So mid January that car left me. And sometime this week the car is being brought back. So all together it costed me about $8-9k to have the car running. Still not registered in NJ because this state sucks for imports. So lesson learned, spend the extra money on a well known importer; they’ll get you a title, running car, and definitely less of a pain in the ass.

I purchased a 94 s14 silvia last year. If I could give one piece of advice to anyone looking to import any car... Just remember, you aren't buying a new car, it's 25 years old, and most likely a car that was never sold here. If you were to go buy a 1995 (insert any used car here) think about all the little things you'll have to fix, all the maintenance that will need to be done, and god forbid something breaks, what it's like to find and buy parts for a car that was sold here, now multiply that cost by about 4-5x for something that a version of was sold here (Like the silvia or supra) and another 4-5x on top of that for something that wasn't sold here (skyline etc.) A lot of people can afford to at least finance an r32 for 25-30k... But not many can pay for the following 15-20k in maintenance on it over the next year or so just getting everything up to snuff on it.

You were awfully kind to Mercedes in the explanation of how we got our rules in the US. The convoluted grey market regulations exist almost entirely because of them. Literally screwed whole segments of people so they could make a few more bucks off Americans. Also, something else worth noting, we're still in the range where many of cars we can import from Japan used R12 A/C refrigerant from the factory. Properly converting to R134 is almost the only way to fix your A/C should there be a problem that creates a leak and that gets expensive in a hurry. I imported an R32 GT-R and dodged a huge bullet by discovering my A/C issues were a loose connector and not a leak.

Very good points to be considered here ⭐. Procuring a rare project is one thing.. maintenance and repairs is another. This past year I had the pleasure of working a restoration project for an 86' Subaru Brat. Glad to get it out the door quickly. Honestly I felt like a curator most of the times and it made me paranoid to store and maintain it. This may be an example of something more extreme than what we all are tuning in for here. I appreciate the experience of restoring something that is older, scarce even though it was a challenge and drove me a little crazy at times (parts difficult to find-had to resort to getting some parts from AU).

R33 gtr's are 50k usd in the states because that's what people are willing to pay after all the importers set that price to test price levels. Do it yourself and you'll be able to save an average of 10k usd. Bought mine in late 2018 for 30k, paid for storage, export, import, duty, bond, brokers, etc and at the end of the day I should be all set for about 35k usd before state tax (picking her up next week from the port). Most clean r33 gtr's from Japan from places like GarageDefend for example are priced higher than mine as prices for clean, non-rusted, accident-free 1995 examples are getting harder to find (also I bought 1 year early knowing prices are going to jump like the 32's). These days it'll run you about 35k usd+ to buy one, so still around 40k usd at the end of the day. Even if you include transportation, a bit of maintenance, and other fees, these US dealers are making a minimum 5k USD per car. Anyway, if anyone needs help with the process, feel free to message me on my IG @omgtr33 because they didn't go over the process at all. I still have people messaging me after my last comment on a video like this on their channel.

You can register the vehicle in the other country for a certain period of time and can take it to usa pretty easy. Cost me 500 agent and shipping cost. Paid zero taxes.

I've imported a 2000 integra type-r. Fairly simple process here in Canada, just chose a car and gave a company bunch a money. Then picked it up at the docks an got it inspected. Now im thinking of importing something else, maybe evo 9 wagon or sg9 sti? r34 GT-R's are way too expensive now, 100k expensive.

If you get a imported car and the parts get discontinued is the option to go to ebay motor becuase you barely can find like if the dashboard cracks you barely can find the dashboard even on toyota dealerships

Fun fact here in Vermont the law is technically 15 years instead of 25 years since you don't need a title if a car is over 15 years old. So yes you can get a r34 in the states it just will take a bit more time and u need to deal with registering the car in Vermont.

Wrong. Not federally legal until 25 years old and will usually be stopped at the port. Good way to get a car crushed or have its serial banned forever.

All I've been doing for the past two months is just going back and forth between Japanese Classics and Duncan Imports just dreaming of having an import. Even though my wallet is empty. :(
