What playing Celts boils down to for me: 1: Woad Raiders: "I can run faster than you, Longshanks!" 2: Playing against Camel-spammers: "Ya ever seen a ship before, lad?" 3: Economy: "An army marches on how many infantry you can produce in two minutes." 4: Combat tactics: Patrols. Patrols everywhere. And lots of bushwhacking behind forests. 5: The final battle (using AI matches as a reference) : Economically starving the enemy after having cut off their access to the rest of the map and then proceed to be a giant pain in the ass until the king finally has enough and says "aight, imma head out" *surrenders* Oftentimes, the AI will give up long before the town siege even starts. The last time this happened with the Turks, they had a huge army of camels when they surrendered.

The reason why people struggle with celts is because they don’t make enough scorpions. Everyone knows your army comp will be halbs and onagers. So for every 1 onager you have you should make 2 scorpions. This will eat into your costs of siege rams. I would forgo the siege rams altogether and use trebs for castles since they do fire faster.

Your main counter is beefy infantry/cav snipes. The scorpions handle that

Celts are my fav civ. I'm fascinated with macro and unit transitions. This civ requires you to master it.

Even units that are not fully upgradable can be useful and even unexpected. Go archers and the enemy will not have skirmishers prepared but I love playing with light Calvary for raiding eco since seeing the pros use light cav so effectively, lose 8 light cav but wreck the op’s economy. Worth it as long as your economy is able to prep the next wave of raiders. Once I get them upgraded, elite woad raiders even 15 of them shred production buildings, trounce archers, monks, siege, and villagers. I’ve been maining Magyars for so long, I needed a change. So I’m trying to learn Celts.

Celts are hilarious that they feel glorious in castle age then their bonuses crash to the ground so bad, you only have siege+trash, champs or some woad raider raids in imp.

6:17 - YES, this is my problem with Infantry. Even with the buffs, the Militia-line loses to Archer, ties with Cav at best, and has trouble catching vills -- Spear at least fills the anti-Cav role, but Militia always felt like a 'blank' with no role. It's like playing Rock, Paper, Scissors, but Paper ties with Rock and loses to Scissors. Goths are the only ones I've seen that can open with more than 3 Man-at-arms and feel like a threat. Like, that Celt siege bonus would be awesome if infantry was a viable opener.

why not add Squire to celts tech tree? make them really the fastest infantry. maybe low the civ bonus speed to 10% for a total of 20% for 150 food cost

I'd really like this civ to get some extra bonus for laming. Like, "your sheep can never be stolen" or scout LoS +1. Maybe even "you can create sheeps for 60food at your mills"

That's what their sheep bonus does. Means you can steal sheep.

The biggest thing with infantry civs is stone walling/house walling out more mobile opponents. It is a game of making your opponents waste resources without getting damage.

Meta-wise the Celts seem like a weaker version of the Goths. Don't let them build up and get their Castles and siege weapons up or you're done for.

At the pro level MaA are starting to come in after people typically wall so you pay more than a drush (MaA upgrade) and go up to feudal with worse eco (22 rather than 24 vils) for less chance to do damage (drush hits earlier). MaA is still solid and can be devastating especially at lower levels (harder to fight off with vils/a bit less micro intensive) but I think that's why Hera isn't favoring it so much these days. Still very solid with, for example, japanese

Celts having Galleons is kinda pointless bc they dont have Bracer, so they dont really have an Imperial Age army on water. Otherwise their Water is kinda good. All upgrades and the best ecobonus for water.

​@Emperor AlHasan It is related to launch of Age of Kings in 1999. No player could create more than 40 archers when pop limit was only 75. Bloodlines wasn't in the game in Age of Kings as well. Therefore, Paladin without last armor upgrade was still useful. I still think Bloodlines isn't much important upgrade for game sake. In theory, It is supposed to make some civs not to go cavalry lines but even Celts go Knights in castle age. In Imperial Age, Celts doesn't go Paladin due to last armor upgrade not bloodlines. If bloodlines tech is removed, game doesn't change much. If bloodlines give +2 damage instead of +20 hp, it will be more logical tech than it is now I think.

@@teddyhaines6613 Bloodlines change game dynamics wrong way. Light cav and cav archers are unnecessarily tanky because of this tech. Changing bloodlines into +2 damage, 20% trample damage make game a lot of more consistent. If any civ doesn't have bloodlines, they invest another tech and they lose a little due to this lack. Even husbandry is more important tech than bloodlines. Teuton Paladin is destroyed by cav archers because Teutons lack Husbandry. If Teutons lack bloodlines instead of Husbandry, Teuton Paladins will be stronger.

main issue with celts for me is that they die so hard in castle age to cav archers. In imperial age, there a bit better, but they still got nothing to somting like arbalest bombard cannon. And they suck in castle age. There a vary powerful civ, but powerful doesn't really mean good in practice
