Soap making 2020! New Multi-Bar Soap Cutter!- From Russia With Love
Today, I want to show off our new soap cutter! This is a 12 bar soap cutter we recently ordered from Konstantin Mitrokhin in Russia! He has a really cool Etsy shop dedicated to soap making equipment (mostly cutters) that he produces himself.
This is a Baltic birch plywood soap cutter with standard guitar strings. Great construction and service!
Here's his Etsy shop link: (Woodskinru) www.etsy.com/shop/WOODSKINru

I love my multi-bar cutter....it's paid for itself in time saved! I got mine from Bud's Workshop a few years ago (also on Etsy). Tip...slide your loaf over & thinly slice the 2 ends off. That way your end pieces are identical to the rest of the bars. I cut the little ends into 2 pieces & send in orders as "sniffer samples".

Hi. just ran across this video again and it seems I already beat myself to a comment. Looks like it was 3 years ago. wow. Just wanted to make a comment about the price of the cutter. But first I'll say since last time I have been busy on the side myself making soap cutters. More like a slab cutter similar to the (second) soap cutter but the design I came up with has 20+ various heights, requires no tools ever, uses simple fishing which one spool lasts a lifetime (in making them). It takes time to put together but I've sold them from Florida all the way to California. They even come with logos and different designs. I've gotten pretty good at making them. It took some practice but I got it down pat now. I bring that up as background for a reason. Here in America, wood costs a small fortune. I recently made one out of red oak with two birds sitting in a tree (like japan artwork) as its design. Its very accurate, can easily take the walls off using wing nuts and store in a drawer. It took about 3-4 days to make. The wood alone cost $60. So if it takes 3-4 days to make a $60 profit margin to sell for $120 is not good. So, as a result, I can't sell that one. No one will buy because the way the economy is being ran and the dollar is too tight. In other words, Russia must have really really cheap wood. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you. Some of my inspiration came from this very video with the use of being taken apart easily as an inspiration. It just sucks that we have to pay such a high price to make something but a fairly low price to buy something.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 8 ай бұрын
Understood. The reason his prices are as low as they are start with his material. He's using Baltic birch plywood (cabinet grade for us Americans) and its made fairly local to his location. So that's one reason. The other is that their cost of labor is different even for the one man artist shops like his. Then, add the fact that for them to ship to us is way cheaper than even our regional shipping here at home. I can make basic plywood (good quality plywood) and accurate molds and cutters for a pretty good price overall. But the shipping really seems to kill the deal. Plywood helps a lot since you can get a lot of material from one sheet and precut many parts for future builds all at once. That helps keep the labor costs down some too.

Dont forget to loosen strings after a cut. The wood handles will crack if you dont take pressure off by loosening strings. Been there done that. Unfortunately the manufacturer didnt tell me before hand and with cost of shipping it's cheaper to buy new one.

That may be "pricey" but compared to some others that are similar both wooden and metal are 3 to 4 times more expensive. But 2 thumbs up for saving lots of time. I have seen the video of you struggling and using time with your previous method of cutting. This seems you cut 2 loafs done way faster than before. Oh yes and what are your thoughts for storage of it since it takes up so much space? Flat surface on a shelf or hanging it?
@Uncle_Jon
@Uncle_Jon 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the time it wasn't really a struggle at all to use the single current..lol. But it was shower for sure. You could easily make it able to be hung on the wall. I would just make a latch to keep it closed out maybe a small bungee cord to wrap around it. Because once hung up, it will tend to seeing open. But, for now, I leave it sitting in a counter in another area and use it to prop up my media laptop when I'm recording videos and editing 🤣 Like on a ship... Things need to serve dial purpose..lol

Uncle Jon, I have a question. I love soaps and I want to start making soaps myself as a hobby. I like to use natural products for my skin, especially I am obsessed with soaps. But I hear all the time that soaps are not good for my skin PH, that skin PH is around 5 and soaps is 9. Is it true that soaps are messing up with my skin PH? I deal with mild acne en psoriasis, so I really want to know your thoughts about soaps and skin PH. Thanks in advance!!
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
I think that soap would be fine for your skin. The only purpose for soap is to get you clean. In some cases, people over use soap and that is where many skin complications start. Also.. for acne, i highly recommend African Black Soap! It doesn't smell pretty but it really seems to work!

Mine is cutting crooked every time :( I can't seem to get the strings through the soap even if it's only a 18 hours old. I get this wonky looking cut. I have the same one and the single one - same issue. I wrecked three loaves trying to adjust and fix. Is it loose screws? The wires are really tight.
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 4 жыл бұрын
I've been looking at mine too. I wonder if it's just cheaper / weaker guitar strings. I may go buy a set like I normally would and see if that improves things. If so I'll do a video on it.

@CrystalLeeQuibell 4 жыл бұрын
@@unclejonssoap Glad it wasn't just me but also not - it sucks to have the soaps come out wonky. With the single bar it seems to catch on the edge at one part have way down - I might cut/sand it down. The multi bar cut one loaf straight once. :-/ I'll look for the new video and I hope the stronger strings do the trick!

Help me understand why they haven't made something like this for melt and pour?
@Uncle_Jon
@Uncle_Jon 4 жыл бұрын
It would have to be a lot stronger which would make it very cost prohibitive. Plus, the person using it would need to be a lot stronger to get all the wires through. So most melt and pour would be easier in individual cavity molds.
@KyleenDrake
@KyleenDrake 4 жыл бұрын
@@Uncle_Jon Melt and pour hardens too fast? Seems like there would be another design for melt and pour that does something similar. Perhaps some kind of rigged up hydraulic system with a blade on it. Some geek out there has to get the bright idea to modify a not so expensive tool to do that.
@Uncle_Jon
@Uncle_Jon 4 жыл бұрын
@@KyleenDrake that's just it... Blades are always going to cost more than guitar strings...lol.
@KyleenDrake
@KyleenDrake 4 жыл бұрын
@@Uncle_Jon But using melt and pour and having a hydraulic cutter, even if it only is cutting individual cavity molds, would allow someone to cut melt and pour very quickly, even if its only one bar at a time. Multi-wire cutters can get up to $300. A guitar string is about $4.00. And a melt and pour cutter is about $8.00. Bit more expensive than a guitar string sure, but I know there are a lot of brilliant people out there that could rig that up. Going to be interesting when they do. Thanks for the heads up.
