Imagine if Final Fantasy 7 had been 45 dollars. Then, to unlock certain materia, you had to pay 20 more dollars. Then to access Yuffie and Vincent, it was 25 more dollars. Wanna play games at the golden saucer? 1 ticket each, but tickets refresh at 1 per day, with packs of 10 sold at 5 dollars each. Want your new weapons to look different in the battle screen? 9.99. Unlock the chance to fight the optional weapon bosses for 4.99 each! Bought all that? Cool, you now have all the available content and a bit more from disk 1. Bet you can't wait to unlock disks 2 and 3 for 25 more dollars each! Did you unlock Yuffie and Vincent? Cool! Now you just have to pay a measly 1.99 each to access their ultimate weapons! Isn't that a bargain from the 4.99 you have to pay for the MAIN characters special weapons??

To me, the craziness that micro transactions achieved was because of the real worst thing that happened to gaming. Game Corporations being taken over by Short term Speculators instead of long term investors. It's created a sickening cycle of always having the pressure to constantly get them profits every quarter in an unsustainable loop. This means, the people buying their games are no longer the customer. The short term "investors" are the customers. The lower ranked employees and the people buying the game are the product.

Fallout 76 is at this moment the culmination of Bethesda’s incompetence. From Fallout 3 to 76, the quality of the writing and worldbuilding has gone downhill more and more with each passing day. For example, some points about the Minutemen as you mention: They are a complete nonentity in the game that go nowhere near to feeling like an actual faction, eventually being populated by NPCs that don’t do anything. You run into Garvey and all of a sudden he makes you the leader but it’s meaningless. You are the leader in name only because you constantly have to do quests and turn them into him like he’s in charge, and beyond that you can’t do anything for the Minutemen. And no, building and saving settlements don’t count, speaking of he straight up tells you to get more when you want to build the teleporter but don’t have enough settlements. Your character’s motivation! There’s videos that go well into detail on why Bethesda has done poorly with Fallout.
