This educational experience allowed our younger generation to learn first-hand from America’s Greatest Generation. I just looked up the definition of "class," and there was a picture of Gary Sinise. 9:20. This gentleman, with the voice of the best voiceover artist working today, states it precisely. "We're just the survivors. The ones who are not here and who paid the ultimate sacrifice, are the ones who ought to be honored." I'm a Boomer, but every one of these wonderful guys, my parents generation, ALWAYS said the same thing: "I'm the lucky guy who made it back. The heroes are the ones who did not." Most of the current generation of whiny brats (the kids in this video excluded!) have no idea of the sacrifices The Greatest Generation made to get us here today.

My Great Uncle Raymond died on 8 Jun 44, in the failed paratrooper drop, but another Great Uncle, Coleman, stormed Normandy as a Tank Commander, after having faced Rommel in North Africa, and made it home. I sat for a day when I was in High School and just listened, and learned more in one day than a year of school, or more, ever taught me. He helped liberate Buchenwald, he talked about playing pranks and about the horrors of what he saw. We are losing icons of what it means to be a hero every day, and losing history with them. Coleman passed a few years after I graduated, in the late 1990's, I so wish I could have taken this trip with him.

You make an excellent case for the obvious: if you know any of these guys, drop everything you are doing today and have a sit down with him. Bring along a video recorder and be prepared to record for a lot of hours. As Sheepdog points out, before you know it, that guy is gone, and you will live the rest of your days regretting that you didn't record him when you had the chance. Do it TODAY because there may be no tomorrow!!!!!

Thank you Mr. Sinise for doing something so special for these wonderful veterans. I wish my grandpa was still with us in my family. He was a navy veteran. My father in law was a Vietnam tunnel rat. We lost my father in law 11 years ago. The memories for him were so horrible he had nightmares until his dying day and ended up drinking himself to death due to it. I miss them both so very much.

My Grandfather was an MP in WWII, a Great Uncle was a Tank Commander at Dog One, another Great Uncle a paratrooper that fell on 8 June 44, another Great Uncle survived a nazi torpedo. Thank you Gary, for honoring those that fought the nazi threat.

My Father was a US Marine on Guadalcanal in 1942, Rendova, Munda and Guam. I served USMC 1980 - 1990, again in USAF 2006 - 2017. I went back after a 16+ year break... Legacy and Honor compelled...

I can't help tearing up watching this wonderful group of students paired with our veterans of "The Greatest Generation". I think it is wonderful of Gary to arrange for these two generations to meet; to share stories & memories & to be honoured, as one veteran put it, "We are the survivors. Those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and aren't here, should never be forgotten". I cried, because my Dad was a WWII veteran; I cried because my nephew was killed in Afghanistan in 2005. Thank you for pairing our younger generation with our greatest generation. It is absolutely imperative that we honour our veterans and see that their legacy never dies. God bless all of you. There are no better teachers than those of The Greatest Generation who are still with us, to tell the moving, amazing, gut-wrenching stories of their service. I had the great privilege of spending 16 years working in Veteran's Long Term Care in Canada, and these Men and Women are all Heroes, but they are almost always the first to re-direct any honours to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless you Gary, and your team, for creating this opportunity for these Vets and Students. I can guarantee you, these Students will never be the same - they will see their Country and the World in a different way, and these relationships will become a blessing for them and their Vets. We must cherish the moments we have left with this Generation, and record their stories for posterity. "LEST WE FORGET" .

This is incredible! I'm an Iraq Veteran and I think it would be appropriate to have ALL high school students to have an opportunity to meet a few Veterans in person. I would never put myself in the same category as our WW2 Veterans but I think ALL of us Veterans could bring something into the kids lives.

I have tears. This is awesome. My father served in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. He was even at Pearl when it was hit. He started out as an underwater demolition, a Seal. He taught me to serve. So I did. Thank you Gary and your team for all you do. You are such a blessing.

I’ve met some WWII veterans from time to time in my monthly visits to the VA hospital. Talked to a 95 year old man who landed on the beaches of Normandy. I have to agree with that young man in the video that said you can read a hundred history books about WWII, but unless you hear it from someone who was actually there you never really know what they experienced. Sadly, the greatest generation is dying off. The experience these kids are getting through talking to these ear heroes is priceless. God bless all the men and women who served during WWII and God bless Gary Sinese for putting this together. I would love to meet him one time just to shake his hand.

Thank you Gary for all you do. I had the opportunity to meet with 21 WWII Veterans who came to Alaska for the 75th Battle of Attu Commemoration where I put together an exhibit of the 43 Attuans who were taken as prisoners of war to Japan. Only 23 lived to come home after the war. Sad times and little known history of the Aleut, Attu, people. I was also able to meet some Japanese descendants of those who fought against the Americans on Attu and Kiska Islands in the Aleutian Islands.

Gary Sinise you are one incredible guy and things you do to help people and one day I would love to have the experience like these people did. I remember doing WWII at school and learning all about it, but i think the best way to learn about WWII is from the Veterans who have been in the war and know what it's like.

I would love to be part of one of these trips. My father was in the 29th Division and landed on Omaha Beach 6/44/6 D Day. I'd always wished I could have taken him here to this museum, but as he aged his health wouldn't allow him to. God bless all who served in WW II.

My dad was in the signal corp in Europe. Unfortunately he died in 1976 way before the recognition of the greatest generation really took off. I was 19 and never really sat down with him and talked about his experiences during the war. One of the biggest regrets in my life. I wish I could have gone to the WWII museum with him. Thanks to you Gary, I live vicariously through you, to my dad.

Hi Gary Sinise!!! Thank you from the Philippines! My dad told his children stories of WW2 when after his home in Manila was bombed they were forced to flee on foot going back to his mother's hometown in Pampanga and being adopted by US troops to to what is now Subic Base since he spoke English although he was only 9 years old at the time. His family never went hungry during the war because he was allowed to work in the commisary doing odd jobs and he'd go home with food and chocolates for his siblings since he was the only boy in a fatherless family of 8. He remembered being asked by some of the soldiers if he would like to come home with them to the US but he declined saying that he is respo sible for taking care of his family. He grew up to be a brilliant lawyer who speaks English with an American accent much to every one's surprise. All of his siblings grew up and one migrated to the US and 2 are still in Canada. The WW2 veterans deserve to be honored because without their sacrifice I wonder how world history would be right now and I wonder what would've happened to my dad who had 11 children and lived an amazing life without those compassionate American soldiers. So thank you for taking care of them You have the gratitude of a big family scattered all over the world because of one boy that was helped by this veterans.God bless you.

My father and all of my uncles were WWII vets.They are all gone now, but videos like this bring them back to me and bring me to tears. One of my uncles was a Japanese POW who physically survived but fought the enemy the rest of his life. It was very sad to see and broke our hearts as he was a kind and gentle soul during the daylight hours. But at night he became a soldier again forever. I wrote a poem for them and will share some of it here. My father in his prime of life, went to war. And the man he was, was no more. The sights, the sounds, the smells of strife, Forever changed his way of life. We must remember these brave souls and what they stood for lest we forfeit the freedoms they died for.

These school students are getting an experience a lot of kids dont get.talking to a veteran of ww2.i was lucky I grew up in the 60s with veterans in my family. An uncle who survived the battan death March, one of dads cousins who served in Patton's 3rd army so I was lucky.now as a 60 yr old veteran of Iraq I've talked to my grandsons class at his request

So many of these veterans who died and the ones who survived are true hero's. I know for the ones who survived often wonder why they made it. Well it's because of those who survived where spared so they could tell their stories of all that happened in the wars. You can read as much as u want from a book but take a moment and listen to their stories face to face and you will learn so much more than you can from a book. God bless them all.

Love this. Both my grandfathers fought in WW2, and even my grandmother was a codebreaker. Neither man ever talked about it. Love them both dearly, though. My mother's father, especially, I knew best, and I think the thing he would want you to know is that they did not think of themselves as special. There was a job to be done, they were the ones who could do it, so they did. My eldest grandfather passed away in 1980 from alcoholism, when I was very little. My mother's father passed away in 1998. My grandmother passed in 2012. Thank you for caring about them.
