This is the moment a lady with Alzheimer's had a conversation with herself - after not recognising her reflection in the mirror.
Betty Pettit, 84, was on vacation with her family in Garden City, South Carolina when she got confused by the full length mirror in one of the bedrooms.
The mum of three lives with her son Joshua Pettit, 46, and her husband Bob Pettit, 84, who each share the responsibility of looking after her on a day to day basis.

By opening up your mouth, you apparently assume a universal truth that you feel should be blindly adopted universally. That’s what they call “contempt prior to investigation”. My mother went through this too, used to tell us she had to get home to look after the boys,( I am the youngest of those boys and at 59 can look after myself. She used to talk about my dad as if she was just speaking to him, although he had died 10 years previously. Best advice I can give is dont fight it with your sister. Accept what is happening. My sisters would correct my mother and they would get upset. I accepted it and went with the flow. It wasnt a problem for me and luckily my mother always knew who I was and was always happy. Thats all you can ask.

@@vamboroolz1612 I agree 100 percent. My Dad knew who I was and we could carry on otherwise normal conversations, but he would mention something like “you should see the car I got” and tell me details about a specific car and how he went out and got it. I would completely roll with it. If it was from a dream or whatever, it was completely real to him and he was happy! It wasn’t hurting anyone and I couldn’t see crushing something like that. (He was into cars, and I am too) On the flip side of that, my neighbor once told me about their family visiting his father in-law in a nursing home and the father in law said something about having just talked with his wife (that had passed long ago) and he made it a point to not only correct him and say “don’t you remember? She died” but basically argued the point and said I can bring you pictures from the funeral. WHY?!

@@larrythomas3624 Exactly. That scenario confuses and embarrasses them, not to mention shocks them. Can you imagine learning of the death of a loved one which for you is the first time, but getting that two or three times a day every day? As you say, it is pointless as within minutes they have forgotten and all you have done is devastate them for a few seconds. Not really the point of family love is it?

It’s so terrifying the fact that like parts of ability to speak and have like manners is intact but the ability to recognize her own reflection is totally destroyed. It makes it really uncanny as like you could think you’re totally mentally alright when in fact it’s the exact opposite. She would seem so functional and like healthy if instead she was just talking to another person, which makes it so uncanny

It's painful when people you love have Alzheimer's. But nothing is more reassuring than seeing them still happen and enjoying life and being themselves. My uncle still has his same smile and laugh. I can still make him laugh by blowing him an over exaggerated kiss when I leave. He can't keep up with conversations that well, but he can still play with his grand daughter who is the apple of his eye. It's good to know that Alzheimers can not stop his happiness. All any of us can do is enjoy the time we have, and he can still do that too.

That is so sweet and at the same time so painful. I lost my Grandma to Alzheimer's disease. One day we went to visit her at the hospital. The doctor met us, and he explained that the day before, she had gotten out of her bed and came across a chair. And he found her looking at the chair. She had no idea what a chair was used for, no idea what a chair was. Alzheimer's is such a painful disease. I was genuinely happy it took my Grandma as quick as it did. Some families go on suffering for years. God help them.

Proof that when the brain is deteriorating and then gone, you're gone. You are your brain and nervous system. Without it, you wouldn't be "you." I'm so glad she has a loving family to look after her. Bless her. It is sad when people cannot remember who they are. A lovely lady opposite from me on the street was told her son had died of a heart attack whilst driving. Her response was 'Oh well worse things happen'. It was like the shock kicked in immediately and she forgot who she was. She would walk out during the night with her nightie on and another neighbour would go looking for her and she was always walking back to where she lived when her son was born. But she was still a lovely lady but living 45 years earlier in her head.

She even thought there was another woman in her bedroom. She said 'I don't live here, there's another woman in the bedroom' so on numerous occasions I would go upstairs and say 'Elsie there's no one here' then she would go upstairs and get dressed. My mom is 70 next year and has started showing what I think are early signs. I'm not bothered so much about what it'll do to me, I hate the thought of what it'll be like for my other half when the guy that loves her more than life itself doesn't even know who she is. I cooked in a care home. There was a lady who could see, from her room, when I turned the lights on in the kitchen in the morning. She would often come down and ask me if I needed any help. I had to explain to her that she was retired and didn't need to work anymore. She couldn't remember her own name, but she never left her room without attaching her keys to a button hole in her blouse. She had no idea how long she had been there and I could never tell her because I didn't have access to that information. Sometimes I thought that she must have felt like she was living in a strange movie.
