This past Sunday my son caught an 18" corbina at Huntington State Beach on a metal jig. He saw lots of corbina and sand crabs right up close but didn't catch any more because he's on a kick right now where he only wants to fish artificials. I didn't get to fish in the morning because I was holding a fire pit at Huntington City Beach near the pier for my daughter and niece and friends to come later in the day, but when my son worked his way over and fished the pier he said he could see tons of corbina and croaker all over the surf, and a guy fishing deeper on the pier brought up a huge spotfin croaker. Unfortunately for me, by the time my daughter released me there were too many people in the water to fish. The things we do for our kids -- I sacrificed my fishing for them on Fathers Day!

Kudos to your son, I love tricking fish on artificials too! For Corbina, I stick to the real thing for now but maybe one day I'll try and target them in other ways. I'm sure it was a difficult thing to do on Sunday, but this is an example of why you are a great dad!!

sweet man I love catching corbina's, seal beach has some monsters that jump out of the water, We went out to long beach on monday afternoon. Fishing was a little slow but we got 4 18 inch sand bass and a legal calico. There are some monster sand bass out there. Sight casting for corbina is like Socal version of bonefishing. So spooky and fight really hard. Very challenging fish to hook. Nice job!!

I love the comment, totally shows you know your stuff! I think that's an excellent comparison based on what I've been told (never caught a bonefish). Thank you for the report from Monday, that's not bad for a slow day at all!! 4 18" sand bass sounds like an excellent session to me!
@itiswhatitis...96483 жыл бұрын
@@BenjieKimFishing We didn't catch anything else just those sandies and a calico, but they were quality bass. I've never caught a bonefish either, same kind of deal as the corbinas but usually you use live shrimp or fly fishing. One of the hardest and most satisfying catches you can ever have. They fight really hard for their size too. Watching your vids makes me wanna start surf fishing. My kids would love digging up those sand crabs then sight casting. So cool man!!!

Haha, you caught me!! Love that you saw that and watched from the previous video. I was totally insecure man...we should set our drag according to line, not the fish. I had it set where I THOUGHT I wanted, but when I felt the weight of this one, I decided to lighten it a tad cuz I REALLY didn't want to lose it. Thankfully it worked out. Glad to hear you're getting a surf setup, would love to hear what you go with!

cool sight fishing tips bro! do you know if corbina are in the red fish fam? the too fish look alot alike!
@BenjieKimFishing3 жыл бұрын
Man, I don't know if they're in the same fam but they certainly seem to share some similar characteristics. I know many folks confuse Whiting for Corbina too. I do know that Corbina is in the croaker family - so yellowfin croaker, spotfin croaker....and even White Sea Bass are all in the same family.

Do you find you need 25-30 sand crabs when you go hunting for beans? Or it that just overkill so you don’t have to go back and look again?
@BenjieKimFishing3 жыл бұрын
Probably a bit overkill. I always dump what I don't use. But I've also had days where I run short and I need to spend more time harvesting in the middle of a bite. So I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Would you say low tide is the best for sight fishing beans?
@BenjieKimFishing3 жыл бұрын
Short answer is yes. I prefer a 1' to 2' tide, lots of time between sets, calm and clear water.

@nqi873 жыл бұрын
Are Corbina leader/line shy? Is 12 lbs fluorocarbon okay?
@404errorfilenotfound3 жыл бұрын
In my experience, corbinas are more line shy than other surf fishes so fluoro is perfect (although I've caught them on mono). You don't need 12 lbs. 6-8 lb should suffice for more natural presentation. I've even seen people use 4 lb.
@BenjieKimFishing3 жыл бұрын
100% Corbina are not line shy. Here's a video where I address it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaKwZqynl6qcapo A couple of the hands down best sight fishermen I know exclusively use straight braid with a split shot (no leader).....and they do WAY better than me. A couple of things to address here - There's a huge difference between sight fishing Corbina and bait and waiting for them. If you're bait and waiting for them, whatever pound test you're using won't matter. High/low rig with sand crabs or mussel WILL produce. If you're sight fishing them, there are many other things that will prevent you from getting bit before the light refraction of line class comes into play - namely spooking them from your physical presence OR spooking them with heavier rigs (namely splash). When sight fishing, presentation and timing are EVERYTHING. Getting your lead cast as the corbina are moving up high to feed and whether your bait looks natural is critical to them deciding to bite.
@BenjieKimFishing3 жыл бұрын
I've used 4 lb fluoro for 95% of my time targeting these finicky guys. Last year, I fished with a mentor who uses straight braid (w/ split shot) and he took me to SCHOOL. He caught 4 beans that day ranging from 20" to 23" while I skunked on my 4 lb. This year, I've moved up to 6 lb just to shorten the fight and hopefully help their survival and I'm dabbling with straight braid as well. I KNOW it works, I just don't have the confidence yet.

Hey Benjie kim what’s the best beach in San Diego to fish for corbina
@BenjieKimFishing3 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthew, man I've spent a couple of sessions in SD targeting them but I wish my knowledge was more thorough. BUT, I know Torrey Pines holds them pretty good during the peak months. Just gotta time it with the right swing and water temps and walk that beach. I can't say its the best beach but for sure its a solid option.

@@BenjieKimFishing thank man. I got a corbina in mission bay but it’s was on accident. But now I really want to catch one in the surf. I meant have to try out mission bay jetty. It has been years since I’ve caught corbina there. I use to slay them with my dad on trout tackle.😂😂
@Sweetaccord3 жыл бұрын
The other way I see them being caught is with multiple large treble hooks with a white flag tied on the line and no bait is used that I see. I see this on the Newport and Huntington piers. 🤔
