Thanks for posting this. An absolute classic, from a time when punk wasn't codified, or for sale at the mall. The same stuff parents buy for their kids at Hot Topic they used to burn on the Church lawn during Sunday Go To Meetin's, and cops would beat the shit out of you for it if they thought they could get away with it. How times have changed.

Definitely one of their best songs. I think Brent wrote this one.

This is rehearsal footage circa 1981. I used to see SD around that time, and they were an amazing band with an amazing sound. After Mike changed his look and lost his youth, some of their charisma went with it, IMHO.

That's no joke either. Being a punk back in those days meant being ready to either fight or run, whenever you went out.

Remember, right around the Hell Comes to Your House sessions, when Social Distortion was almost a hardcore band...
@Soundeagle34564 жыл бұрын
they were melodic hardcore if you wanna fancy term for it. Then they went full pop punk.
@nickyreynolds33264 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that "melodic hardcore" is just punk.
@Shikta-poobah673 жыл бұрын
They were always just a straight up punk band to me (back then). They played to the hardcore crowd and shared the stage with hardcore bands, but SD was never afraid to let their rock and roll roots show. They stood out from all the other loud-fast-rules bands of the day. A few songs, like this one could almost be considered hardcore, but they were the epitome of pure punk in the early 80’s.

Easily Social Distortion's best jam hands down from a time before "moshing" and crowd killing. OG punk forever.

All the really good punk drummers have just one rack tom. (And a single kick pedal.) I'm watching Derek O'Brien here and seeing why. It's not just minimalism; it's that you need super-sharp control over the drum kit to actually play a song at this pace -- as opposed to just playing fast drum parts mechanically while other guys play guitar and bass in the same room.
@mikesalzano64167 жыл бұрын
A big part of the reason that 1st Social Distortion album sounds different than the others... why its so blistering... is Derek O'Brien. I've forever wished he would play with Mike again. What a fucking animal on the drums.....
@valdesigns13464 жыл бұрын
Spot on. Derek's drumming is superb.

on time I was at a show at Fenders Ballroom in Long Beach, and I Social Distortion was playing . there was about 20 people there watching. . it was so weird. late 1986 maybe With The Floor Lords, and Tex and the Horse Heads. they were still like in the video, just before they changed the vibe and look. killer show with all the bands. It was the old is dead and new hadn't showed up yet. a lot of the kids were in to NY hardcore and thrash punk skate metal.

Derek O'Brien. This guy needs to be talked about more. I swear it sounds like there's two people playing on this song. He's their best drummer in my opinion. Mommy's Little Monster wouldn't have sounded as good as it does without his playing

Punk isn't some fashion movement for fcks sake, it's a lifestyle. All the kids who think that they're so punk because they wear safety pins on their clothes and worship a guy named Sid have no idea what they're talking about.
