Can't count how many times I've seen or met Social D. My former roommate's uncle had a lot to do with Time Bomb records. She introduced me to Mike a few times. This was back around the late mid to late '90s, around 'White Trash, White Heat. You did an amazing job on this, Adam.
I was little and my mom was dating one of the drummers of Social D...I grew up on their music! I loved seeing the little bit of history i didn't know! Thank you for the share!

The summer of "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" was my last summer before moving out of state to start my adult life. This was the album that played at every party that year. It was the last time I saw so many friends, many were starting careers, getting married, couple of them died later that year. Was a great summer and SOCIAL D always brings back some great memories.

On the same record as "Reach For The Sky" was the song "Don't Take Me For Granted" which was written about the passing of longtime member Dennis Darnell. That song always gives me chills knowing the story behind Mike & Dennis' friendship.

Hello Adam The Who, I am rapidly learning that SOME of my best friends from old, have become my most hurtful critics of my vlog. And, now, people whom I have never met eyeball to eyeball are my greatest sources of encouragement to me. It is all so funny how it works out. My sister Patti and I watch your vlog every day. There is a certain loneliness to being a daily vlogger. It is really a new frontier of journalism. We are documenting some of the times and places that for the most are ignored by the traditional TV news media. For example, the other day when you talked to the older man who collects Tonka toys and he told of how he has given some of his Tonka trucks away to people passing by. That really touched my heart. My dad, when he was still alive, collected Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars and trucks. He would often give them away to children in our old neighborhood and bring them to the hospital for children. I hold such a great respect for you. In all so many ways, you inspired me to take the first steps to being a vlogger. I am finding it to be fun and also just plain hard work. But, I am learning with the passing of each day that a vlogger must have a thick skin at times. Thank you for all you have done to blaze the trail for all so many of us fellow vloggers, Rookies and Veteran Vlogglers. Most Sincerely, Richard Mabey

Yes the Cukoo’s Nest! My brother got to play there in a punk band called Citizen Fear in the 80’s. The guitar player’s name was Andy Winston. He taught me how to play the Ventures Walk don’t Run when I was a kid. My older brother Frank played drums with him. In fact my parents went to the gig when my brother played there at the Cukoos Nest and saw all the punk rockers and freaked out. Made him quit the band. I am 10 years younger so by the time I was into Goth and Punk Rock they didn’t care. Ha ha. I remember seeing No Doubt at the Doll Hut when they first started. That place was tiny.

Wow Adam. Talk about memories. The last thing I did before leaving So cal was visiting Bill the owner of Black Hole Records right there on Harbor Blvd. Bill gave me a stack of Black Hole Records stickers to take with me to Nashville. I’ll never forget discovering Punk Rock walking into Black Hole Records for the first time. Seeing records nailed to the ceiling and buying Ramones records. Black Hole Records was located on Brea Blvd. in the 80’s. When I last saw Bill I thanked him for keeping Black Hole Records going. I told Bill I appreciate him. Being a punk rock kid in the 80’s in Orange County, record stores like Black Hole, punk rock shops like Erazzmatazz in the Orange Circle were safe havens for us punk rock goth kids. Discovering all the bands buying the manic panic hair dye. Those were the best of times. I didn’t know Bill closed Black Hole. They were at that location on Harbor Blvd for 20 years or more. Bill is a legend! His wife ran the vintage clothing shop. I hope he just moved the store. Thank Adam. Love your videos man. In that photo you show in your video, Bill the owner of Black Hole Records is all the way on the left. He would always where t-shirt sport coat and shades. He looked a lot like Kevin Haskins from Bauhaus. Bill will always have a special place in my heart. Great guy.

You had the correct location of The Cuckoo’s Nest. The building was demolished in early 2000. The first S.D. Gig was not at The Nest. I believe it was at La Vida Hot Springs. Ness was in a brawl at The Nest when part of his ear was bit off. The owner of Black Hole Records was in The Mechanics. He told me that Ness would sometimes roadie for them. Ness said he was stabbing a wall at The Black Hole when his hand slipped causing his left pinky finger to be sliced. It’s permanently damaged which gives him (part of) his guitar playing style. There’s a warehouse near Black Hole Records where many of the Fullertown bands (including S.D.) would rehearse and have parties. Lastly, Ness for a time in the 1980’s lived in a little shack behind a house in Fullerton. That’s where he wrote many of the songs that would propel the band to success. The mural is clearly an homage to the City of Costa Mesa, not S.D. The Ramones and T.S.O.L. are also depicted. Cool little video 🤙

I got to see Social Distortion a handful of years ago (finally) at a festival they were headlining here in socal. I think that was probably the last time I was in a moshpit also. I played a show with Agent Orange at the knitting factory in hollywood I think somewhere around 2007 or 2008. Never got to see or play a show with the Vandals though another good oc/socal punk band, but I loved some of their songs growing up as well. Your punk video from florida the other day was one of my fav videos ive seen of yours! It was really cool and interesting because ive been out here in socal my whole life so to see and hear florida perspective of the scene was great. And also Im not gonna lie Im jealous bc since Im younger than you I missed a lot of the raw punk days and kinda just grabbed the very tail end of the peak stuff. I got to go to a lot of good punk shows though out here. Ive seen Rancid moer than once, green day, bouncing souls (jealous you got to see them several times in the early days as you mentioned in the other vid!), the briggs, street dogs and so many other of my favorite punk bands. The last show I played with my old band was with Mike from Mxpx so that was great. We have some good punk bands that came out of CA here! Our main local venues growing up here were showcase theater in corona (played there a few times only), and chain reaction. Im sure youve played those venues before!!
