I had a friend of mine over from work one night. We were having drinks and talking books, movies, etc. This movie came up, and he said he'd never seen it, so I decided to remedy that. After the movie, he was in my bathroom for like 20 minutes, and I thought maybe he just drank too much. He came out and said, "I just broke up with my girlfriend." I had no idea he'd just started dating a white girl like two weeks prior.

Took me until my last watch to realize that they were so insistent on him not smoking bc 1. It gave the mom a good excuse to hypnotize him in the beginning (but she really did that without his consent so that’s a weak reason) and 2. This movie is great for rewashing because you get to see all the seeds he planted that are easily missed. Everything was intentional in this movie. Remember in the beginning when he told Rose he didn't want to get chased off her porch with a shot gu ? And what happened at the end? Even something so small as Chris putting the shaving cream on his face and the white patry goers pulling up in black cars, it's all symbolism! There are so many think pieces on this movie. That Oscar was well deserved!

Loved what Rekkai had to say. This movie was also too triggering for my girlfriend, and she's never going to watch it again, despite her recognising it's quality and it's obvious relevance. It was a little too relevant and too raw. So I completely see where Rekkai is coming from. She also won't watch things like 13th and When They See Us for the same reasons. Too real, too raw. Like many people she's experienced lots of direct and indirect racism and she doesn't need to be re-traumatised in her free time.

This was the best post-reaction discussion I've heard for this movie, and I've listened to it more than once. This movie leaves a person with a lot of uncomfortable feelings and I needed to hear it talked out. Thank you, I love learning. Btw, Jordan Peele's movie Us was *NOT* good. I think my expectations were too high after seeing Get Out. When Us was over I actually rage cried over how bad it was. I was really with it up to a point, which only made it worse when the point came and I was pulled out of the story by its stupidity. It only left me with questions, mostly about how am I supposed to buy this.

Jordan constructed the film to be a completely different watch the second time. I noticed a lot of things that I didn’t before; right off the bat, Rose’s naughty smirk at the pastry shop now looks completely sinister - this was done deliberately. The second viewing of the film cemented it as one of my favorite films. Not to mention the nods to Ira Levin and those film adaptations. And it’s also a postmodern B movie. I just regret not seeing it in a packed theater 🎭

Okay so @6:11 what we all as viewers had to find after watching this multiple times is that when Rose was at the bakery or café, she bent down on purpose so the black man standing behind her could check her out. He started checking her out as soon as she walked in. She was already planning out her next victim once she trapped Chris in. She's looking at him in the glass looking and smiling at him while she's looking at the food. That detail took me awhile to get and see once I read comments about it

Like I get playing some puzzle game to avoid a scary movie sucking you too far in but when you are actually doing a reaction video and recording yourself for thousands to watch and you can’t commit to putting your phone down for an hour or so what are we doing? Syntell has seen this before - we all hear watching Rekkai not watch a movie. Edit to add: after finishing video I fully feel Rekkai’s position on the traumatic load of this movie and why he chose to ignore it until now and why he was distant from jump - totally get that. Maybe would have been better to say no though? Reaction videos (like anything else) should be enthusiastic and consensual.

“a real black person” i assume she meant a dark skinned brother, but the phrasing was off to me.

@@dreambrother82 yeah, I heard that too. And I wonder would racist parents be just a little more upset if it happens to be a very dark-skinnes black person?

Not so fun fact (depending how you view it..) There’s an alternate ending where Chris is found by the cops instead of his friend and is still behind bars after 6 months after the murders. There’s great dialogue between Chris and Rod that’s powerful and symbolic about the internal struggle black men suffer of escaping their demons to only end up locked up behind bars or dead.. Jordan peele wanted to use that ending but chose to give the audience a less somber ending to finally exhale from the suspense of the movie.

I like watching Black people react to this movie because entertainment value aside, there are opportunities to learn from their commentary. I've learned that even though the behavior from the white people is exaggerated for the story, a lot of Black people have experienced enough similar behavior that they can still relate to the main character's experience during the party scene. That's been eye-opening for me, to be honest, because I found that to be one of the most horrifying parts of the movie. Because it's so REAL, and plausible. And even though the partygoers are technically assigning positive traits to Black people, it's still dehumanizing because they're just making baseless assumptions about an entire group of people. Denying Black people their humanity by insisting they all fit into this one tiny box is pretty gross, and treating him like a dog in a show? Ugh. So I found that scene disgusting, and when I started watching reactions and realized Black people are genuinely familiar with that behavior, it really was eye-opening for me. So, I definitely appreciate videos like this. Thanks for the work it took to make it. :)
