All four of my children suffered severe bullying at school. We lived in regional NSW. and the children came to school from as far away as 50km. Social media was their best way of connecting with their friends. They were online via the now defunct MSM and later Facebook. They chose, wisely I might add, who they were friends with and had a positive experience online. This was how they kept in touch and organised social events and birthday parties. It is an integral part of the modern era of children keeping in touch.

I suffered massive amounts of bullying at school, and that carried over to activities outside of school. I tried joining a football club only to find the bullies from school there, i’d run into them at the local park, and in the streets on my way to the shops or my friend’s place. Does this mean your going to stop under 16s from going to school or leaving the house, for their own protection? The thing is find laughable is that you can turn the internet off, you can refuse to read something from someone you don’t like. Its much harder to stop them from physically hitting you or shut out the yelling, insults, and jeers in the playground.

The problems that I see are as follows: 1. How to enforce without digital identities 2. Everyone would need to participate to prove you aren't under 16 3. Given the govt is threatening to fine platforms that don't enforce it, they will need to do the digital age verifications themselves - Do we trust social media platforms with our ID documents when they leak or get hacked every few months? 4. What is the incentive for platforms to comply? I feel that most of them would simply exit the market - however, those ID's are a juicy gold mine 5. Age verification and preventing young people is a disincentive to bother with protections online - so any that sneak through will be extra vulnerable 6. When someone does turn 16, and have not learnt the pitfalls and savviness of being online in a predominately online world - they will go in completely blind Finally - Isn't this the role of parents? Why not invest the money into education programs - provide parents with software, have awareness groups etc. - we all know the dangers are real, but taking the power out of the people's hands is the wrong way to go about it

Malcolm - please keep up the good fight! C S Lewis once words to the effect that the greater the capacity for something to do good, the greater the capacity for it to do bad. He was talking about human beings, who are capable of great good, and also capable of great evil. He contrasted this with dogs, who are capable of less good, and also capable of less evil. Social Media is similar. It brings great opportunities for good... giving voice to the voiceless, and connection to the disconnected. At the same time, it brings opportunities for evil. The proposed ban for U16's effectively says "we're struggling to manage the bad, so let's get rid of the good too". Imagine if we applied the same logic to humans....

I am so thankful for the expert opinions and commentary in this vlog, what wonderful insights were brought to this committee and I hope that they do not fall on deaf ears. As a regional resident, it is important to not make "blanket rule" decisions on the experience of some negative, urban dynamics. Majority of parents really do care about their children's social interactions, in both person and online. Leave these decisions in parental hands and not the hands of an e-commissioner's office. They are not experts in this field, i.e. psychologists or educators. In regional Australia, under 16s are limited in social interaction dynamics and it is important to allow them access to socialise with others that will support their personal development and psychological well-being.
