According to her Wikipedia entry, Nadine Strossen is the author of “HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship,” a title which pretty much sums up her basic argument in this video (one of many by her that are available on KZbin). Educated citizens of the USA would probably agree that governments should not censor any speech at all, based on the principle that, given an opportunity to censor speech, government censors will inevitably try to extend their authority into every area of public discourse, not just the nasty stuff. Citizens of European countries might accept certain legal limits on speech, remembering how hate speech has, in the past, led to appalling acts of mass volence against hated minorities. Unfortunately, Strossen (in this video, at least) tends to blur the line between government censorship and the exercise of the right of a person or corporation to accept or reject content for publication. She considers both as “censorship,” and both as immoral. Taking Strossen’s argument literally would lead to the conclusion that media corporations should not exercise ANY authority over content, since they have no moral right to do so. To see how absurd this position is, imagine that you have set up a website for the exchange of information about some innocuous subject: gardening tips, for example, or favorite recipes. A hate group discovers your website, determines that posts to it are unfiltered, and spreads the word that this is a great place to exchange information of quite a different sort: bizarre conspiracy theories, obscene rants about the evil of a particular minority group, the addresses of certain members of that hated group, times and places to meet up, etc. In a very short time, you discover that you have lost your original audience and acquired a new, unwanted one. Do you have a moral right to reject this content?-Do you have a moral right to block users who abuse your website in this way? Alternatively, do you have a moral responsibility to leave these hateful comments in place, and to post reasoned arguments against the vile absurdities expressed? The answers to all of these questions should be obvious. To support her thesis that rejection of content by social media is immoral, Strossen cites several cases in which posts with ordinary political content were rejected as “hate speech.” The fact that some corporations made bad decisions regarding content is, of course, not a valid argument for disallowing ALL such decisions. About one minute into the video, Strossen delivers an outright sneer at anyone concerned about the content of social media, when she says “I understand the MORAL satisfaction of calling for suppressing ideas that we hate, but experience shows that censorship does more harm than good.” Characterizing anyone who worries about the current flood of hate speech as a pretentious “Social Justice Warrior” is unfair and uncalled for, and Strossen, as a former president of the ACLU, should know that hate speech does have serious consequences. Just ask the friends and family of Mulugeta Seraw.

Later, some of my companions at our Community Garden re-opened a Facebook page, but they were forced to keep the page limited to a closed group. While we wanted to talk about the weather, what type of bugs to be aware of and how to get rid of them, the planting seasons and what to plant, and how to prepare and preserve our harvests, we were continually invaded by people who wanted to post porn and spam. If the individual isn't able to see that censorship is dangerous, then they are ignorant. If the individual isn't willing to see that censorship is dangerous, then they are arrogant. If the individual is neither able or willing, the what kind of sentient life are we talking about here? In any case, those circumstances do not reward anyone with knowledge, wisdom, or understanding. The fact that there are some people of public interest, who will say as they please, do as they will without the concern for what it might lead to whether small or large, is in my personal opinion, as it stands right now, reckless. I disrespect the words of a man or woman who seeks to infringe on the liberties and rights of us as humans even before citizenry. I also, disregard those who hate others for opinions that lack substance like logic reason and/or empathy. Even still, they have their right and liberty to behave as such regardless of how I feel about it. So of course I am forced to deal with it. I can't speak for reckless behavior, but I will say this: Until you ask me what I stand for, you'll never know my honest intentions. That being said, I am willing to listen to anyone else's intentions as long as you offer me the same respect. If there is no reciprocity, then there will be no sense of understanding for either of us. If you don't have the "balls" or "boobs" to affirm your point while respecting the points of others, then shut the fuck up! I'm willing to bet these people are so cognitively dissonant that they're not willing to learn the errors of their ways. Also, by 'people' I am referring to the decay of american society who behave recklessly and carelessly towards everyone they come into contact with, as well as those in power who dictate public policy. I'd rather there be an understanding, than misguided agendas or narratives circulating falsities and fallacies that hold no real purpose other than to benefit the ones who make the rules. I'm talking about social conditioning leading to brainwash. As a musician, I want to reflect back to the world what it looks like to me. Ever since I was a child I have only wished for the best of humanity. While my life has had a LOT of curveballs thrown my direction, my wishes remain unscathed and unaltered. For me, my music is the best way I know how to express that. My subjective experience however, is only an experience and should NEVER to be taken as gospel. Never Ever!!! As a producer of my own music, my wish is to expand the thoughts, feelings, and levels of consciousness of the people who listen to my music. My end goal there is to get people to think, act, and feel for themselves in their highest form of self representation without needing BIG BROTHER to knock down the door, to emit draconian policies that do more damage than healing. As a veteran I fought for "your" 1st amendment. Don't you dare step on "mine"!!!

I would left disagreeing to her general censuses, that hate speech should not be monitored and censored. I do agree that having a conversation regarding the toxicity of these moments, where hatespeech is censored is super valuable, and should fall in line with consequences from that action. Censorship is just another way to draw the line on moral consensus. Anything that is harmful should be subject to reprimand. The problem now days, is those "harmful" acts are subjective, and certain interests use the censorship protection as a weapon to keep people ignorant. (I am speaking in particular of activism. Ie: eco, animal, humanitatian, etc). So, letting people speak their mind; spewing hurtful messages; or even limiting access to free speech is a big topic... and this sound bite, was exactly that.

I strongly disagree with the Nadine Strossen. I live in an European country, and I am yet to find groups that suffered from hate speech laws. Please, show me some evidence that backs this up. As well as, she is missing the point of hate speech laws. You can say whatever you want, as long as you don't hurt anyone. That's the basic. From here, there are some refinement. For example if somebody incites violence against an ethnic group or a religious group of people between friends in a dark basement pub, that's alright, it's his right to say it. But if he stands on the city's square and shouts these things into the crowd, it could incite violence against said groups. Posting on social media about wishing death to anyone, is not about expressing yourself, but doing it so on a global stage, where millions are also screaming at the very moment. But it's still a stage, there's still an audience, and misinformation, false stories and lies do lead to violence!

Meh, this is more like a US-EU difference, I guess. There are governments, there are laws, and if we live in a good country, you choose who to represent you and how laws should look like. It should be there to help create a working society and community. You need laws to do that. And that's alright. So, society (in optimal scenario) elects officials who create laws for the society. Also current laws have been put in action with consultation with those academics, whose speciality is hate speech regulation. I guess I'm just okay to be abide some laws.

Words cannot describe how pissed off I am about the brazen censorship, it's built up from years of CensorTube increasingly clamping down on free speech year after year, it only gets worse and worse, trying to force you to comply with their mainstream narrative.....fkn tired of it.....

Also, The Separation of Church & State (Smithsonian) is something that Roger Williams came out with due to The Reformation of Denominations which transcended down into our 1st Amendment by Thomas Jefferson.

The biggest problem indeed is that who gets to decide whats right or wrong to say. Is right way to tackle difficult emotions from some subject to supress different opinions with force and censorship. I think history has good examples of where it can lead to. We should rather point the spotlight on things that we see as issues and have two way respectful conversation to understand what lies behind somebodys/some groups opinions or words. If something brings up difficult emotions in us, we should seek from within why we are offended or feel bad and try to understand the other person with respect even if his/hers opinion is way different from ours. If we want to coexist, with our all differences, we should seek understanding and productive dialog. Speak and listen with open mind and heart. Btw. Theres some "haha" jokes about her eyes in comments. Thats fine too, to see some differences funny, but I honestly think they are fascinating and very beautiful, just- and maybe a little bit because of - the way they are. Theres something uniquely sweet in the way her other eye is little bit oblique (I hope thats the right word for not being straight, Im not native english speaker). That, and the sparkle in her eyes made me think, they were most beautiful thing I saw today. Theres countless of different kind of jewels in form of human beauty and we usually appreciate only the ones we are most used to. I think her jewels are bright and perfect as they are. What an wise and beautiful woman.

I'm a direct descendant of Reverend George Wightman (Baptist Encyclopedia), brother of Reverend Valentine Wightman (Baptist Encyclopedia) who married Susannah Holmes, daughter of Mary Holmes, daughter of Mary Sayles, daughter of Roger Williams (Encyclopedia 1636). Susannah Holmes was also the daughter of Obediah Holmes (Encyclopedia) whom Abe Lincoln falls under except Abe Lincoln fell under Sarah Bowne, Susannah's first cousin. Roger Williams was a Puritan that came to America in 1630, 10 years after Puritans crossed on The Mayflower whom were also called "Separatists" after The Reformation of Denominations. Of course, the term "Separatist" vs 'Loyalist" during The American Revolution came from somewhere now didn't it? I've been censored up the wazoo for trying to figure out, "Who took over The United States from within?" I believe I figured out the answer to that question. Because of what I've learned while researching, I've been censored. Of course, Baptists, Amish, etc...etc (denominations) fall under Protestantism. The information I can share is something that many in Washington D.C. would consider "hate speech," all because they don't want the truth to be known.

What I find interesting is both leftist and rightists (if that's a word) both feel like their views are being censored on KZbin. (at least going by their comments in their respective content). If you just scroll through both, and you'll find to some degree they're almost mirroring the concerns of the other. However, if either is being censored, I'm unsure. I've certainly seen channels banned and videos taken down which is cause for concern, as it's creating a greater division.

I usually leave people speechless with the information I gather, but information should never be censored. It should be explored and questioned. Do you think when they formed The Liberty Tree (which eventually wound up in each British Colony out of the 13 British Colonies) that anyone was censored considering that their forum was outdoors with no walls?

Free speech rights matter little if nobody will hear or read your words. Usually, the places we gather to debate are privately owned online spaces, like Facebook or these KZbin comment sections. They can, and do, regulate the speech. Sometimes their human moderators will use their personal opinions about what is hateful to ban speech. On Quora, I and other people have had our answers collapsed because they allegedly violated the "Be Nice, Be Respectful" rule, even though the wording of that rule clearly indicates that it's designed to stop personal attacks; our posts there didn't attack groups of people, let alone target any individual.

The only thing that makes something "hate speech" is the beholder, the listener, of the speech *hates* it. When the privileged class--the government, corporations, algorithms--decide they hate a certain kind of speech, that makes it hate speech. It's the only criteria that matters. Which is why hate speech is a repudiation of free speech. The two are mutually exclusive. If we remove the speech we hate, then once the criteria changes for what the rulers consider "bad speech," all speech will be censored.

Should I share what I gathered that people need to call into question? Oh...and I have been to Revere, MA near Boston at The Comfort Inn before an appointment at MGH in Boston, MA. Traffic across those two toll bridges is a bit nuts. Took me an hour and a half to drive 9 miles from that hotel to the hospital. Also, I had fun at Kings Restaurant & Entertainment playing billiards and watching people bowl. Do I sound like a Russian to you? I was born in The Constitution State (state motto) where Rev. Valentine Wightman was buried in Groton, CT long ago in The Wightman Cemetery near that U.S. Naval Submarine Base where they give tours onboard The U.S.S. Nautilus. Oh...small submarine sardine can that is. I felt claustrophobic on that submarine. I can't imagine serving onboard a naval vessel like that. Of course, I went to Mystic Seaport and Aquarium after that. As for Mystic Pizza, at that time, a little too crunchy for my taste. If I am a Russian, I'd like to know who my parents were? Joking of course. I can't always sound negative with everything I've been sharing. Oh...I'm practically on The Liver Transplant List at MGH, but my MELD Score must reach 15. I'm two points away from that mark. I'm pretty sure I can teach a few things about history that many don't know about, but there are legit facts hidden from us all. Most definitely hidden.

Social media is dicated by government, government has access (was forced to give access) to all social media information, therefore it's not really a 'private' corporation. So now its an arm of the government. 1st amendment applies.

Nadine, I TOTALLY concur!! Just as each one of us can find happiness only within us (cannot blame others for our miseries), the onus is on the listener to reject speech that is unworthy of being retained. Speech is not like physical violence -- it will hurt only if we take it seriously.
