I am a member several chillie groups on Facebook where we share photos, hardships, successes and failures. Just to preface this- 4chan is absolutely so much better than many other sites. The lack of updoots, the lack of post history/accounts. It makes for more objective discussion platform and free market of ideas. However, it certainly is addictive just as any other site. Getting (You)s is addictive. Keeping tabs of discussion open and the free, cost free "socialisation" is addictive. There's a reason people say "remember, you are here forever". I think anything on the internet that isn't being used for work and self progression is ultimately a dangerous thing.

Anyone who submits into the idea of being "programmed" by someone having more likes/subscribers/followers than you do yourself, there really is something wrong with you and you shouldn't be on social media at all. The only allowed exception to this is, of course, if you have a business/product/video idea that may be really cool and to the benefit for all of us, and I mean that in the true meaning of something being awesome and cool, then I do support the idea of that guy, those people, should have their word and idea spread and garner many likes, subs and followers.

I was about to like this video, but that wouldn't be right, would it? So I'll just say this: Very nice video Luke! I'm not sure I completely agree with your argument that people will imitate each other to get these upcummies. However I do believe upcummies are manipulating users of social media, to me it just seems to be more so in regards to popularity (which you mention), self-absorbency (and with this: Idolization, poor self-esteem (for those not getting many upcummies), etc.) Another thing; I've quit almost all social media and planning to hopefully soon leave the arguably worst one, facebook. What I've noticed as being the most difficult part of leaving social media is how integrated it is and here I will talk about facebook, which I think is probably the social media most integrated in most people's lives. For example, a lot of the events I attend, I only see those on fb. Also, communicating with friends without fb is tough, because I have to convince them to use some other software of sorts, which they are most likely not used to. It is still possible to get out of social media and I hope to leave all of it sooner rather than later, but these are for sure what I believe are some of the reasons why people keep using social media and in turn becomes "addicted" to it. Dependent seems more on point, I would say. Oh, and no worries, I still liked this video because of the youtube algorithm. I want people to see your stuff, you're awesome!

notice how dislikes are actually disabled across social platforms these days? (youtube comments, videos still have them, twitter, tik tok, insta, etc. The funny thing is, Facebook does allow negative reactions, but facebook is mostly positive boomer stuff. Twitter does not allow for dislikes but is a toxic dumpster fire.) I think this is partially good, because otherwise people would be killing themselves over their dislikes. However, I think it's truly repugnant that the only you thing you can do these days on a lot of platforms is like. Actually I find the waste of time that is non-essential social platforming repugnant anyway, except for useful platforms. (for example linked-in is positive and has an actual function in your life that can better it in a meaningful way by providing it's users opportunities of employment)

Honestly It's all about how you use platforms. And sites like reddit have a genuine reason for the upvote function, but I never took it seriously and honestly just care about the information. One can actually learn, especially about the psychology of specific people when analyzing such threads. Otherwise there are a simply a lot of platforms that aren't just global and "upcummy"-based at all. And honestly more often than not even on those sites, I really aren't of the same opinion as everyone else, nor do I try to enforce mine on others and that's just right tbh. I can argue and talk with very competent people from all over the world for however long I want, even on topics that might be specific to very niche groups of interest. It's not like 4Chan but I don't think it's wrong either. Rather the opposite, I tend to gain a lot from it.
