Tick, tock, wagies! Having a hard time during lockdown in your cities? Can't pay yout $3,000 a month rent and $2,000 a month student loan debt? That's too bad. You should start living the /innawoods/ NEET way and making your own path away from the bugman city. I talk about ONE SIMPLE TRICK I remember whenever I make a life decision that always points you in the right direction.

Have multiple sets of skills. "America, where anything can happaen" by Grigory Papashvili. Is a book about a post ww1 immigrants from Georgia who comes to America and has to learn how to work in a factory (and other things) because in his homeland his dad made him a saddle maker and a Saber sharpener by trade. In Georgia that made since but not here and vice versa.

There are always time in life when we will need the help of other, but we should strive to be able to do everything for ourselves. Example, you don't have to change your own oil, but you should know how to do it. Anytime you are dependent on others is a point of weakness, but that also doesn't mean you should have others in your life. Be strong, but be part of a community/family. I might not work on my own car, but when there is a problem, I learn about it and learn how to fix it, even if I have someone else do the work in the end. So many people are so quick to just pay someone else to do the work and don't use it as a learning experience. When I help people with their computers, I try to explain the problem to them. Most the time they don't want to hear it. They act like computers are to hard to learn, because they've been told so many times buy companies that computers are hard to use, that's why you need our software, we make it easy. When really they are just making you dependent on them.

@ekksoku

"They act like computers are to hard to learn" the amount of times I've said something relatively simple about using a computer to someone, and they say something like "oh that's too complex for me" effectively sticking their fingers in their ears and going lalala. I don't understand why people refuse to learn like that, I presume it's just "that sounds difficult" and "difficult things require energy" and "I don't want to expend energy, therefore I wont engage". But that's going to be a terrible way to live your life. Similar to Luke's independence based decision making. When I've thought about doing something, and my brain just wants me to not do it, I have to think, that is my brain avoiding using energy, but I don't need to worry about energy, I'm not a hunter-gatherer, therefore use the energy and do the thing.

But the real devil is in the details. You have no choice but to pick your battles; you cannot really be a uniform generalist and also be valuably competent at anything in particular. There are simply too many things to invest just a little bit of yourself into. This is the other extreme that many people take, and it is equally silly. No, computers are not hard to learn, but really nothing at all is hard to do or learn if you have put no priorities on your time or resources.
@ekksoku

True, no one is truly independent. And it's not like a "highly industrialized capitalistic" society doesn't promote hyper independence, because it certainly does. Also, not everyone can just run off and live in the woods, become a hermit, still use tools produced by industrial society. Even in a rural, woodland environment, people still rely on government organizations and programs such as schooling, policing, the fire department and so on. It's ridiculous that people fantasize about running off into the woods, rather than to try and improve their own community.

You have to pay for the gas, repairs, insurance and other things. Same thing is with a lot of things we don't think that we're dependent on. More technology we have the more we become dependent on it. In the movie matrix one of the characters said the zion relied on machines to live.

I keep a file of quotes that I feel are important enough to go back to and reflect on multiple times in the future. I added Luke's bit about making decisions based on how it affects your independence. And while most of my other quotes reflect on the human condition I feel like Luke's statement is incredibly important in acting as a guide on how to keep our internal compasses pointed to true north when we fool ourselves into thinking that life is complicated.

Bought first home in December. Already got several months of home grown vegetables preserved and frozen. Heating system broke yesterday, but we have two redundant systems so all is well. Good heuristic ya got there - if all economic activity stops from tomorrow until forever, my family can survive & thrive off homegrown organic veg + wild rabbit, goat & deer... despite me being an IT wagecuck in the day time

I disagree to an extent with the "Have less friends" statement, you should have better quality friends, and the more quality friends the better. What you should be having less of are the low quality acquaintances that don't bring anything to your life, those are the people I think you are reffering to.

his heuristic has its merits but so does having community. Young people, especially young guys have the natural advantage of being able to "lone wolf" it, but in the long run it's optimal to balance independence with community (friends, family, church, local organizations, etc. at a base level). I think this is true whether you live in a big city or in Luke Smith's little town.

@@SamTheEnglishTeacher - do you agree that there needs to be a balance between community and independence/self-reliance in one's life?
