There are quite a few people that purposely pay more for items on WhatNot auctions for bragging rights in the chat. Then the sellers really make sure to talk them up in front of everyone.

I like the ethos laid out here. With a digital and lonely world (we spend the least amount of time with others in recorded history), these channels might be bright spots of interaction for folks. It's getting into a social engineering, coersion, and demographic shift conversation but I don't think those are wholly disentangled from collectibles to begin with. Diligent investors with well adjusted personalities, the audience you cater to, should be wary. A lot of people will start their collectibles journey with these platforms, and some will eventually continue to channels like yours. Great topic!

I agree, I seen a coin dealer selling on Whatnot and he was telling people the grades of raw coins. Yeah he might have experience, but no one knows the grade until it comes back from the grader.

100% spot-on as always. I'm sure you had a video about "reading the book before buying", but it's baffling when folks impulsively buy a collectible and THEN research lol.

Shawn you should talk about regulation is coming on live stream whatnot and other platforms since it is online gambling in the app. These app promote gambling for kids like sports breaks, Pokémon breaks, mystery boxes and other. You should talk about regulation coming in your next video on whatnot, live stream platform.

One of the most shady things I've ever seen on whatnot is I've come across sellers that, when they don't like the price that an item sold for originally, they'll just relist the same item again up for auction and just hype it up more.

This was (and is) strictly a hobby for me. I have so many videogame, film and literature memorabilia, gotten for as cheap as possible. Also able to sell things for more than I paid if I no longer like the IP anymore. Fantastic hobby.😁😁😁

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what might be the catalyst to cause a steep decline in a modern era pop culture collectible. I was thinking maybe the advent of an electronic VR experience based on the collectible, to replace buying it. No idea what's caused crashes for modern collectibles in the past.
@ReservedInvestments17 күн бұрын
Changing tastes and over-hoarding. Mass produced modern era collectibles are anything, but rare. Pez, Beanie Babies, 90's comic books, 80's-90's sports cards, Power of the Force 2 Star Wars figures produced in the mid-1990's, and even Atari video games...they all died a very quick death when it was discovered that future generations would not want this stuff.

Less shared cultural moments to create nostalgia in future collectors. Algorithms have balkanized audiences and prevent shared experiences through media.

Shawn, the Whatnot guys almost cleaned us out of inventory at FUN last week, and I know they will hype them up to sell at inflated prices that the average collector would never pay ever!

Shawn I saw people selling beanie babies on whatnot. I hope beanie babies comeback in the future. Price cannot go down forever. These beanie babies will be worth a lot of money. Since most people throw beanie babies in the trash like 1952 Mickey mantle rookie card throw in the dumpster.

I disagree to a kind. For influencers I do not care. But for footballers or important owners of an item I will happily pay a premium for it. In other words, it depends...
@sp12317 күн бұрын
I think sports memorabilia has good staying power because its the only event people watch together live. Years from now, people will want to collect cards/jerseys of their favorite players during adolescence.
@BasTHoorn16 күн бұрын
I came back to listen for the second time with this video. And I have more thought to it. Ofcourse common pieces you should not buy crazy premiums. But on scarce items you need some hype nowadays. And I totally disagree that a scarce in demand collectible/antique sells itselfs. I see thousands of items who are scarce and in demand but badly marketed and selling for a discount. I follow a lot of high end art dealers, and without there marketing, research, 'hype' there is no sale. And I see there is a premium for important or interesting provenance. So yes, do not buy with crazy premiums on common as day items. But without proper marketing, in demand scarce items won't sells itself.
@ghill62816 күн бұрын
If you're seeing all these "scarce, high demand" items poorly marketed and selling at discounts we can assume you're buying them all up to properly market them and make a killing, right? Or maybe your understanding of scarce & high demand might not be as deep as you believe.
@BasTHoorn16 күн бұрын
@ghill628 yes and no, (for context Im a student) in my price range yes. Unfortunaly for the higher priced items not yet. Because I cant afford to buy it yet. The coming year I working on that.
@ghill62816 күн бұрын
@@BasTHoorn In sales, especially of collectibles, something I've been involved in for a few decades, a general rule of thumb is that if something is scarce it sells no matter how poorly it's marketed. The price paid for the item is what the item is worth. Full stop. You can look at comps and other listings all you'd like, but in the end the price paid for any collectible is exactly what it is worth. Now, are there deals where one can purchase items repackage them in a new or different format and sell them for more than they were purchased for? Sure, it's called reselling. However, if you're seeing a plethora of items you believe to be scarce which are not selling at a price you believe to be low then I would argue the item is neither as scarce or as high demand as you believe it to be. Buying and selling collectibles is volatile. Always has been. Timing is everything. Something which sells today for $100 may only sell for $50 is a few weeks. The scarcity didn't change & neither did the marketing. What changed is the demand. Demand is everything. People on here wanting to see Beanie Babies make a comeback (and a few predicting they will) are a great example of this phenomenon. Will Beanie Babies ever make a comeback? I don't believe they will but if they do & you own any I'd suggest getting into the resale market quick, turn whatever profit you can and then bail. However, if you see a lot of Beanie Babies listed at $1.00/ea if you purchase the entire lot just assume there is great risk & probably very little opportunity for any reward. Just because you think something is scarce & in high demand doesn't mean it really is. If it is scarce & in high demand it will sell regardless of the format & marketing. Just a fact.
