I grew up when social media didn't exist and I would love to go back to when it didn't exist. Not knowing what people were doing with there lives and no comparing to others. I rather live my life without social media and without having my cell phone. I even got a lock box for my cell phone and love it cause I can focus on other productive things also I can sleep better

@@susannahfriesenofficial when I’m watching a video or a movie I like to do something creative like sewing or jewellery but I’m not sure if that affects my attention span :(

I recently got a new job where I work from home. This was a big change for me, in my previous job I was busy 24/7. Now, that I have more time on my hands I've been trying to implement ways to improve my health from walking/jogging during lunch to cleaning up my house every day. However, once I finish all that I'm left with so much time I don't know what to do, so I start scrolling on all social media and try to watch videos but my mind is blocking it. I used to love reading, I was obsessed with it, and now I'm going to use that free time to implement reading!

Thats awesome! It's so easy to get caught up in the doom scroll, and spend like an hour just scrolling mindlessly.

My problem is reading comments while watching a video. Also looking for other videos while watching a video. Off topic, where is your cream purse from? It's so cute!!

Reading is a good activity to improve your attention span, but it depends on what you’re reading, cause if it’s a writing style or genre you’re not interested in, you won’t be as invested and it’ll be a lot harder to stay focused. But once you find books you enjoy, you’ll exercise that part of your brain, and eventually, digesting more difficult forms of literature will get easier. (This applies to movies as well, but with films, it helps if you have not seen the movie 100 times - that’s usually my problem 😅)

Great video! I think my biggest distraction is my phone (Instagram) and youtube. I work from home and I really struggle to solely focus on my work, without having a video play in the background.

I have found guided prayers extremely useful in fixing this problem. I use the app ‘Pray as you go,’ run and maintained by the Jesuits based in London and their team. Many a time, You’re invited to just sit with God and do nothing. There is a daily devotion as well as other types of retreat-like prayers. For all you Christians out there.

I tried out the pomodoro technique recently for the first time and it was a huge help! I got so much more done because I was focused. I have slipped on using it lately, but I definitely want to keep doing it

I’m early! Thank God for this video. The way you attribute fact to faith is edifying, and I receive it so much better. I’m going to work on getting my screen time down! 😅 Thank you Susannah. Question: Could you do a video on the “Proverbs 31” woman? I’ve seen a lot of videos not accurately representing the meaning of that scripture and trying to make it trendy. Thanks again! 🎉

Things that help me is yes deleting tiktok and instagram but also audio books and just sitting in Gods presence in worship. 1st Thessalonians 5:17 says pray without ceasing. How are we supposed to pray or hear from God if we can’t even sit still and listen. It has been a personal struggle for me also😭

I feel like social media and streaming has forced our attention spans to become shorter when i used to have cable i never got so annoyed with commercials and i didnt mind having to not choose a show to watch and it would just play whatever was live, now its a hassel to pick a show or an app to go on and with ads i feel like they come at the wrong time and the format of social media is too addictive and makes it harder to concentrate

The attention span epidemic thing is a nightmare --- not only because we're less productive, but for a more sinister reason: it makes people focus on the wrong type of things. Instead of focusing on reasonable explanations and debate, people are focusing on short and fear-mongering/rage-bait content and comments. In a world where well-written explanations or proper research are disregarded, but fear-mongering or entertainment are focused on, this means that exciting lies can become fact. The Flat Earth society just needs to do some decent TikToks then everyone will be in it. Our truths don't have to be _true,_ they have to be _fun._
