Social media was supposed to connect us all but instead it’s making us lonely, disconnected and depressed. It’s a worldwide epidemic and an unnoticed addiction. But social media can play a major role in relationship building if we use it right. Galya Westler wants to launch a movement for global recovery from social media addiction.
Galya Westler - galya@plazus.com - is a technology visionary and entrepreneur. Her latest startup is Plazus Builder - an online tool for building mini social apps that connect people.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Finally a speech that deals with the important issues such as social media addiction! small social networks is THE way to do it - small communities can make a HUGE change!!! thank you Galiya!

Thank you Josh for your feedback. That is exactly it. i didn't have time to expand on this too much during the Ted but, this "movement" that I talk about is based on research that shows a clear global (actual)movement from the macro social networks to the micro ones which is why I gave this talk and it aligns with our core values at Plazus (and my own personal life as well ;)

there is a huge meaning in her words! I absolutely agree with her! each of us should slightly reduce the time spent in social media and pay more attention to those who are really important to us. meanwhile people with common interests, even if in small groups, definitely can move mountains.

I think she is right, because in reality people spend a lot of time on social media. I also think that people need to stop living on social networks and start communicating face to face.

I found taking it off my phone has been beneficial to me, as a student I find myself getting distracted because the phone is constantly around me and I could not escape it. No I listen to podcasts on you tube in the background whilst I am working, I highly recommend it.

Strong important message. I'm sharing with all my family. Loved the comparison of social media to gambling. So true. Social media has a place but valuing yourself worth or belonging isn't it. Thank you Galya!! Great talk.

Thank you Joseph for sharing the talk and I am happy you've enjoyed it. Indeed, people are just wanting to belong and feel loved and so it is natural for all of us to be drawn to the attention online...but the trick is to be aware and to make conscious decisions of how we use it.

Interesting talk and great points about real human interaction and positive usages of social media. Social media itself is not the issue, the real issue lies in the people who use it in an addictive manner. Social media is merely a platform for whatever the user wants it to be. It is your own choice to compare yourself to others or to craft up a phony "perfect" identity. It is your choice to base your self-worth on Facebook likes and comments. In the very same ways, it is our choice to use social media in healthy, authentic ways.

I loved her talk and the story of her brother and the powerful way of delivering a very important message. it is so not relevant to comment on one cloths or style...will they do that to a man? Really loved it and thank you for the message.

Hahah thanks Christie, it's all good. some people tend to judge women a bit more than men but what makes us unique and beautiful is with the message and being experts in our domain rather than how we look which is a funny comment talking about social media and "perfect selfies" as my point exactly how people are obsessed with how they look and judge others the same way :).

I find myself comparing more in person then social media... Seeing all these people in person with more friends, confidence & luxury blah. On social media it's just my friends I'm happy for them. Sure I don't get a lot of likes (I don't add very many people), but the likes I do get, mean something to me each individually because they are my friends

How about people who we meet on social media in the first opportunity? Even if we meet them in reality afterwards, I feel like the connections with them are still superficial

This talk will continue to be relevant as social media seeks our attention, as well as into next generation technology takes us further into virtual reality. Let's face it the physical, the material world, wants us to push and ascribe to virtual efforts - it oddly disconnects us from LOVE. What eternally remains true is that our heart hungers for human interaction in this world, yes, but the inherent longing is to Our Father, the creator, our Savior in Christ. God loves you (yes you) and has a plan for you, sin interrupted the union with God, Jesus Christ came to reconcile and save humankind through a New Passover, and He left us this access through a Church to returning the Faithful to union (by living a life in Christ accomplished through the Sacraments) for when we leave this life. For the purpose of this life is to know Him, love Him, and serve Him. It gets more difficult with the constant distractions that we have in our moment in history as you point out in this great talk Also, thank you for sharing the story of your brother, may he be in union in Heaven with God. May someday you be reunited with your brother and loved ones who have passed and been faithful. I love your passion and points you made in the TED talk. We must break the addictions to Social Media and focus on truth and LOVE. May God bless you!
