Funny how they say 'You can claim your benefits.' -- For most of us who worked 30 to 40 years, the Social Security is not a BENEFIT. It's money they put into the system. They should say 'You can claim your money back'.

If our government can send Americans taxpayers money abroad in billions and billions of dollars, i.e.,Ukraine, spend millions and millions of dollars for a candidates while millions of Americans are in poverty, homelessness, veterans in need, disabled, seniors who are in dire needs, the government cannot raise their social security benefits who worked all their lives paying for their social security!!!!!

If you don't collect from 62 to 67, that's 60 months you didn't get ANY money If you were supposed to receive 2000$ a month, that's 120000$ (60x2000) you didn't collect Even if at 67, you will get 3000$, instead of 2000$, it'll take 10 YEARS to make up the 120000$ you didn't collect You'll be 77, by the time you "break" even But that doesn't count inflation and devaluation of money Plus you're 77 yrs old! ALSO, that's 15 years from the time you could have started collecting! Bottom line, take it at 62, even if you just invest it, there's no guarantees in life!

The comment posted below is absolutely correct...and I noticed that you said increase, "it's only an allowance" the government allows you to have. It's not the actual amount that we should be getting on our social security. They only show part of the graph, which is the lowest increased part. It should be figured for the year not just part of it. If we received 5.9% last year, what about all the gas increases we started getting at the first of the year which takes up more than the 5.9% increase at that point. When we enter into 2023, the 8.7 increase will be sucked right back into the horses mouth through gas and food prices. We should be getting at least 10% "allowance" per sa or more.

I think we're being snookered on our payments. We receive COLAs to keep up with inflation. The SSA is aware that our payments are worth less at the end of September (at which time they declare the forthcoming increase, which this year is 8.7 percent). If we deserve an increase starting January 01, why don't we deserve an increase for the months of Sep, Oct, Nov and Dec? We should get an inflation adjusted check starting in January AND an adjustment check for the previous four months. The only reason we don't is "because you just don't" which is a typical government reason.

Last year I received $68 SS and before it even hit my account I got a notice that my food help would go down by $23. My rent went up $23 a month. Then the food help rewrote and it went from $99 a month on the first hit of $23 and now went down to $22 a month. So, from over $100 to now $22. I make $1,127 a month. At this salary at age 71 I get free medical and rent help and electrical and now less food. I do not have a TV nor cable and can still afford my insurance on my car. I have had to cut my insurance just this month to the basic coverage as it went up to $75 a month from $52.00. I am not complaining at all I feel very blessed but if they give us to much it takes too much away. And then I will be poverty level for sure.

Bud prepper your comment is nonsense! My working class kids make three times my Social Security income. They aren't living lavish lives at all. My new 8.7% increased income is one crisis away from total on-the-street-tapped out poverty. I only eat twice daily as it is and if things don't get better quick by mid year I will only eat one meal daily. This is how working class retirees live after a lifetime of hard work and scraping and scrounging only to have it disappear periodically because of a recession, a bubble or a pandemic. I just get so annoyed when some folks think we live high on the hog. We don't!

Unfortunately, due to an influx of business and economic simpletons in positions of power in D.C. over the last couple years, between gas, utilities and food alone......my expenditures have increased about 6K a year for the last 2 years with no end in sight, until at least the 2024 "election".
