“I came from Tibet at the age of 8 in 1997. It was our eldest brother, who remains in Tibet, who decided that my two other brothers and I should leave for India.
We were sent to India because of our father, a merchant who travelled frequently for business. We lived in Derge, in the Kham province of Tibet, and his trips usually took a month or two. This time, his return was delayed, and we later discovered that he had been arrested on his way back. My mother, brothers, and I had no idea why he was detained. All we could do was wait. One day, he finally came home, but he was weak, malnourished, and partially paralyzed. We were speechless. I couldn't believe that this once robust man had become so frail.
Later, we learned that he had been arrested for possessing a portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and a tape recorder with one of his speeches. From that moment, our family was marked in the eyes of the Chinese authorities. We were frequently interrogated and had our belongings searched without a warrant. Eventually, our father passed away, and our mother fell into depression.
Fed up with this constant harassment, our brother decided we should move to Lhasa as a family. However, life in Lhasa was harsh. None of us could attend school because our father was accused of political activities. Finally, our brother sent me and my two other brothers to India, so we could be near His Holiness and receive a proper education."
