Mini-bio: My name is Brady. I'm 24 years old and am a graduate student in history. I started this channel as something fun to do while I finish my schooling. My primary area of study ranges roughly from the American Revolution through the first sixty years of the 19th century. While I am a historian (with a B.A. in Liberal Arts), I am a very new historian. I am more of a learner than a teacher, so I use the react format to do a little bit of both. Also, flags are fun, and I like them very much... and video games... and maybe some other stuff. While my videos are not all history related, this channel has a serious social studies bend to it.
Bird Note: I have a bird, his name is Peridot (Peri for short). You may see him appear in some videos and not others. While he has quickly become the channel's mascot, he only appears in videos when he feels like it. I don't force him to come on camera, he just likes being around hoomans, and I am hooman. Also, understand that birds are a lot of work, so don't go out and get one impulsively just because mine appears behaved in my videos. Bird parenting is a full-time job.

Yup. The English-Speaking world tends to use the 7-continent model, where North America and South America are continents, but together they are called “the Americas” not just “America,” so there is no confusion when calling the country just “America” for short. Also under English grammar rules, while you can call the country The United States, it would be ungrammatical to call the people of that country “United-Statesians” or describe things originating from or linked to the US as “United-Statesian” which would be the literal translation of the Spanish-language (and I think Portuguese and French too, but haven’t confirmed) demonym for the US. IIRC about a 3rd each of the world uses the 7-continent model, the 6-continent (unified America, separate Europe and Asia) Model, and the 6-continent (unified Eurasia, 2 Americas) model, with a very small minority using the 5-continent (unified America and unified Eurasia) model. I was raised with the 7-continent model and personally think the 6 continent (unified Eurasia, but 2 Americas) model makes the most geographical sense, but “when in Rome, do as the Romans do,” so happily switch to the 6-continent (unified America) model when speaking Spanish.

On the "Chinese discovery of America" thing, I'm pretty sure (,thinks of some big number,) 99% of academics think it's horseshit. Otherwise, the discovery is attributed to Zheng He's expeditions into the "south sea" from 1405 to 1433 under the Ming Dynasty. (For perspective, Yuan- Mongol-1200s-to-1300s, then Ming-Chinese-1300s-1600s, .then Qing-Manchu-1600s-1912.) He's a ethnically Chinese, religiously Muslim eunuch explorer under the mandate of emperor at the time to come into contact and collect tribute from foreign civilizations. He made 7 voyages from 1405 to 1433, the first four were travels through SEA and the Indian coast, the last three went even further to Arabia and East Africa. THEY BROUGHT GIRAFFES ETC. BACK TO CHINA, ALIVE. The following emperor turned China back into isolationism after previous decades of openness and exploration. So in one way, this is a pretty fun alt-history to write about. Cause these treasure fleets are insane in both size and number. The fleet was basically a floating, multi-boat city, one could probably Noah it for a while with how well-rounded the personell were. The single ships themselves were massive (find a side-by-side view of a average European ship to the ships of this treasure fleet), and apparently, from Britannica, the first voyage, the one that only traveled SEA and the east coast of India, had 62 ships and 27,800 men. Zheng He's wikipedia for a quick read, of course XD

yeah if the idea that china somehow sent an expedition to a part of the American continent is based on the Zheng He expeditions it faces the rather large historical problem that every one of the trips was headed in the opposite direction... Not impossible that there was a Chinese visitor, and I think it's even quite likely that some Chinese/ Japanese fishing boats/ fishermen occasionally got blown off course and shipwrecked in the Americas and couldn't make it back, but an actual 2-way trip where a Chinese person could have informed people of the land on the other side of the pacific? Doesn't seem like it, Their technology would have made it possible, but the interest from the decision-makers who would have to put together the resources for an expensive voyage just doesn't seem to have been there, and of course the Chinese emperors lost interest in the fleet before it was able to build on Zheng He's work.

The China discovering America, come from the journeys of the Chinese admiral Zheng He, who led a number of expeditions in the early 15th century to Indonesia, India, Africa and (possibly) to America. It's certain that he went as far as Africa, since one of the things he brought back with him where giraffes. Whether he went to America though? Ehhhh? It's not been satisfactorily proven. Yet. Still, you should read up on him, he was an interesting dude.

@IONATVS
@IONATVS 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I think some of the founding fathers may have wanted such a thing and proposed the name with that in mind, but most of the founding fathers only cared about uniting the states of BRITISH America and probably would have resisted Mexico or other Latin American colonies annexations even had they wanted to join after their independence. So possibly, but certainly not openly.

I once saw a George Carlin video that states that the usage of the term "native Americans" is misguided, both because that group has roots in Asia, making them no more native to America than any other USA born person, and also because the term Indians refers to God, "dios", not India. Not that it's changes anything about the European arrival, morally speaking, in any way, of course. BTW, Brady's realization face regarding the East Indies is priceless!
@IONATVS
@IONATVS 3 жыл бұрын
By that standard, all humans would be “Native Africans” if you go far enough back. “Native American” and “Pacific Islander” are already fairly broad labels considering each are composed of many distinct ethnic, linguistic, and cultural groups, and while they may be sub-groups of the broader label “Asian,” having more specific labels is useful, especially if people aren’t willing to learn the hundreds of more specific native tribe and nation names. IMO “Native” has 3 reasonable definitions: either (a) the first people group (that we know of and is relevant to modern conversation) that lived in that land (ie native Americans in the Americas’ case) (b) the land from which a given people group arose based on our earliest historical records of them as distinct people groups (ie Beringia for the Native Americans, the central Asian steppe for the Turks, or Anglia, Saxony, and Jutland for the Anglo-Saxons) or (c) anyone born in that land, period. The word “native” derives comes from the latin word for “related to birth” so “native land” literally means “land of birth” so the last is the most literal interpretation, but the Romans did use it in both the other senses when talking about the birthplace of a “people” instead of a “person”.

@@IONATVS that is all very true, and there isn't a real clean way to separate peoples. It's just confusing. If a Pure endonym doesn't exist, you can still say other things. I'm not that history-savvy, but I'm guessing "first-arrival americans" would be more accurate. If we know, we can intersect time and place of arrival, like Domingo-15 would be for 15th century Santa-Domingo arriving European americans. (Google stumped me on the details regarding native Americans.) Of course, all of this is purely academic, I am not gonna get upset over inaccuracies that native Americans themselves don't

@@CaptainAmerica001 thanx for your assertion, here in Mexico there was talk of creating the first American nation by virtue of persevering a continuation of "Aztec empire". Which is funny enough, the viceroyalty New Spain saw it's self persevering such continuation, under the Spanish crown. currently historians are debating how much discontent there was about the identity of individuals, within the caste system. Most people who could afford to ignore it, simply went with the title Spanish American, or North American.

Hi neighbor!, Yeah Canadians I've known are sometimes a bit irritated by the name, but it doesn't seem to be a big deal for most of you most of the time. Latin Americans on the other hand often feel deeply insulted that we call ourselves Americans. Part of it is that the common English language means that I think Canadians have a better intuitive understanding of why both history and the English language make it difficult to call ourselves anything else. Spanish/ Portuguese speakers don't have that understanding and are more likely to think calling ourselves American is somehow meant to demean them and are taught from a young age that America refers to the entire continent (and that there is only 1 American continent, not 2)
