What do hymns, holy water, and incense have to do with defending human rights around the world?
As Kai and Libby explain in “Catholic Central: Catholic Social Teaching," we can’t all be missionaries or social workers, but the tenets of Catholic social teaching instruct us how to treat others - such as workers, family, friends or even strangers - and the environment, whether far away or in our own backyard.

I would have used this in my classroom if you had not chosen to perpetuate the idea that "Africa" is poor and needs saving. Also, it is a continent, not a nation. This was just a small part, but is makes it unusable in a diverse and/or culturally competent classroom setting.

Hi Martha. Thank you so much for pointing that out to us, we appreciate your feedback and apologize for the misrepresentation of Africa . We have since changed the video by removing this part and hope that you will now be able to use this in your classroom.

At 3:46, you say "responsibility without rights is Tyranny", you mean to say Anarchy or a similar word. Tyranny is defined as "cruel and oppressive government or rule."
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 2 ай бұрын
While the statement does not fully define the term "Tyranny" "responsibility without rights" could describe situations where individuals are expected to fulfill certain duties or obligations but lack the corresponding rights or freedoms to protect their own interests or well-being. This could be a form of tyranny. On the other hand, anarchy can be described as "Anarchy is a state of society without government or authority, characterized by a lack of centralized control or hierarchical structure, often leading to individual autonomy and decentralized decision-making." In a very broad brush stroke, no government or authority means no rights or responsibilities.

@@stefanieschoolaccount9534 Hi i just saw your comment: You should first try to have a discussion with them about how the relationship dynamics are toxic. They might be willing to work towards improving it and making it healthier. If not, then you must take care of yourself and unfortunately that means stepping back or walking away from this relationship. It might feel and be difficult at the time, but your future self will thank you for this!

Hi Mary Ann, yes, you are correct. We made a concerted effort on set to make sure that the word "Tenet" did not sound like "Tenant" unfortunately, the company that supplied the subtitles did not pick up on it. We have since corrected it and thank you for bringing it to our attention.

@Nebulous Have you read what the popes have said about communism? Rerum Novarum (1891) and Quadragesimo Anno (1931), plus Divini Redemptoris (1937), just to name a few. Of course the Church has written stuff against many patterns of capitalism. But with communism, it's too materialistic. Why favor it?

Nebulous and Me You, our problem with communism is its track record. On paper it paints a heartfelt picture. Karl Marx wrote: “From each according to ability, to each according to need.” It almost sounds like Marx must have read about the early disciples of Jesus: “All who believed were together and had all things in common. And they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.” (Acts 2:44-45.) For the disciples, this social and economic arrangement was voluntary. But Marxist-Leninist communism has always led to brutal dictatorship, from the Russian Revolution to today’s North Korea. Its leaders have killed millions and survival means blind obedience to the state. Under Communism human beings are tools of the system and the Party claims supreme authority over the individual. For Catholics this violates the “Dignity of the Human Person” which is given to us by God. Catholic Social Teaching fights for solidarity and economic justice without destroying our humanity and fundamental rights.

Life begins at birth, not conception! This is why I left the catholic church!!!!!!!
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 2 жыл бұрын
James, We are sorry you have left the Church because of its teaching about life in all its stages. It’s a bit like abandoning your whole family at the Thanksgiving table because of an argument between Aunt Freda and Uncle Steve. Catholicism is about being at that table, at the Feast, about the Presence of Jesus there, about being part of a centuries-long conversation in which you are asked to participate in light of your freedom of informed conscience ….. and we thank you for that participation in this forum. To state our own view, we agree with science that life begins at conception. Scientifically, the zygote and developing fetus are as “alive” in every biological and organic sense as a teenager, a fish or a flowering tree. Consciousness and biological autonomy are not necessary conditions for science to claim that an organism has life. The Church is in agreement with this view. Also, If the fetus weren’t a human life, its organs and tissue would not be harvested for medical research on the human organism. On a historical note, the Latin word Fetus means “baby,” and since time immemorial an expectant mother’s loss of a fetus is mourned far more than as a mere expulsion of lifeless tissue from her body. Non-scientists disagree on these matters for philosophical and political reasons, but the science and the Church stand by their view of what constitutes the beginning of life. Again, this does not mean that you should abandon the spiritual treasure that is the Church. We will pray for you, and hope that you will pray too, and stay, and like all of us will listen to others with respect and love.

@@CatholicCentralVideos You speak about respect and love but endorse the persecution of the LGBTQ+ community simply because they have the audacity to live their truths as a part of God's creation. Also, I didn't abandon anything. I chose to turn my back on an outdated, oppressive religious institution and forged my own path towards a church that has shown more love to ALL of God's creation than I have ever experienced in any Catholic church.
