What does it mean to be human?
In “Catholic Central: Being Human,” Kai and Libby explore what being a human being means, both in terms of science and as Christians. This includes the idea of being made in the image and likeness of God, our capacity for love, our need for community, the ways in which we create and communicate, and our eternal destiny.

Just finished a morning prayer session in tears, naming every last hardship I could think of, tossing them all at the foot of the cross - I think very often in my day to day work routine about human nature and our capacity to...weep and laugh. This video was exactly what I needed this morning because of the simple humor I found - helped me to laugh. Thank you for your ministry! Happy Thanksgiving - Matt, Michigan

Thank you for bringing our faith to young people through humor! I just subscribed to your channel having heard a segment on Relevant Radio. I was listening to this video in search of an intro into Catholic Social Teaching but was a bit concerned about the statement "Birth until Eternity." This could be confusing for young viewers who are told by secular media that pre-born babies are not human. Might you consider changing "Birth" to "Conception"? Respectfully, a humble catechist 🙏

Hi Anne, thank you for the sub and bringing this to our attention. You are absolutely right that God’s gift of life spans conception to eternity, and we did not mean to suggest otherwise. Our theme in the episode is what it means to be consciously human in the world, growing in our awareness of who and what we are as created beings and of the God above us, beside us and within us. Our phrase "birth to eternity" felt consistent with that dimension of human development. But your comment is insightful, and while we don’t have the budget to revise our episodes once they’re posted, we hope that each of our episodes will inspire viewers to see more of our series and with it a more complete view of our shared beliefs. Our episode called “Pro-Life,” for example, speaks explicitly to your point: “Unlike any other cluster of cells in our bodies,” Libby explains, “a fertilized egg is on a specific journey to become an individualized human being. And Catholics believe that is a holy creation, a growing child….” And you might recall that in our “Catholic Social Teaching” episode, Libby reiterates that “every human life has value and dignity,” emphasizing that Catholics are "called to protect life from its beginning in the womb all the way to natural death.” Meantime, God bless your crucial work as catechist, and thank you for supporting our ministry with yours.

An awesome piece of work! Can't imagine a better way to show the difference between a universe created by a loving God and the empty universe of the secularists where we're biological robots existing by meaningless chance. Every young Catholic should see this.

This was for kids. I’m 33 and on a spiritual journey. Where we come from ? Why we are here ? All that. I do think we are created in the image of that we call god and god is the real consciences? The ever eternal giver off life is us

Hi Ghostly, we are all on a spiritual journey - whether we realize it or not. You ask very good questions and these are questions that have been asked since the beginning of time. We certainly do not pretend to have all of the answers and you probably should not listen to anyone who claims they do, but as Catholics, we believe we come from God himself. He created us. He also gave us free will, which allows us to choose whether or not we want to do everything he asks of us. Why are we here? That is a tough one, but we like to think that we are here to learn to love. To use that free will and align ourselves with what God desires of us. God is Love and he wants us to experience him in every aspect of our lives and, as such, we need to learn to love. It is only when we learn to love that we can truly experience the kingdom of God that Jesus speaks about in the Gospels. We doubt that anyone can surrender completely to that Love, but we can certainly approach it and, with the way the world is today, we need it more than ever. The one comment we have to take issue with is where you say "The ever eternal giver of life is us". We believe that God is the ever eternal giver of life and that we are born in his image and likeness. We are not eternal, not at least in this form. We thank you for your questions and comments and pray for your continued spiritual journey.

Catholic Central thanks for your reply and god bless. Yeah it’s very confusing the now in the world. Me and my family have approached our church lately but haven’t heard much back from them since Coronavirus. It’s worrying but we pray everyday that things get better especially for people who are very vulnerable the now. My family and me hope you are all well And everyone watching or listening is safe. Peace ✌️

Hi Ghostly, thank you for your reply and may God bless you as well. If you are having problems with your parish, we would urge you to reach out and try to contact them again. Sometimes the people in the office are overwhelmed (and short-staffed) and things like this have a way of falling through the cracks. If you feel that they are indeed ignoring you, then please, please, please try to find a new parish. As you are probably well aware, all parishes have their own "personality" and you need to find one that fits you and your family. We pray for your continued health and safety.
