I have a question regarding reactive fake service dogs. My SDIT was doing wonderful and was ignoring all dogs in the stores etc...then a fake dog tried to attack him twice at the same store. Now he is slightly reactive when a dog barks and lunges at him. He usually barks once and I get him focused on me and walk away. The times he was nearly attacked, he was cornered and we could not remove him and the owner refused to leave my personal space. This man is no longer allowed in the store, but I have to retrain him. How do I set him up for success? He is great with other dogs, knows all the doggie rules and is great, unless the dogs are lunging, barking, and trying to kill him. Lol help please.

Yeah no my vet was really against me taking my puppy out to socialize because he didn't have all of his shots. When I told her about him becoming a service dog she said I can live without him and the same for when it's hot to not take him outside. I feel like she didn't understand the service dog portion. Now he is 4 months and is really nervous around new people and dogs. I don't know how to properly socialize him any advice?

My SD puppy has started barking at literlally everything...I'm talking trees blowing in the wind, any music with violins or higher pitched noises, people talking on tvs. He was super quiert the first 3 weeks and now is a whirlwind of barking. Any advice? He just barks when he doesn't understand something it seems. He will come to me and give me all the attention and be quiet with treats. But only while I am giving him treats. If I stop periodically he turns right around and starts barking again

My pup im going to be getting is 14 weeks old, I've missed the socialization mark and im so scared she's going to wash out as a service dog. Luckily she's met a few other dogs, she also currently lives in a small town so she's not used to loud noises and stuff. Will this compromise her training to be a service dog. She is a GSD so they are quite confident dog naturally, I just dont want to set her up to fail as she's going to be coming to school with me from next year on and if she's not ready im not going to be able to go and I really just want to finish my education.

So when young you designate days for social outings where people are able to pet and puppy can play. Say it’s Monday Wednesday. Then on Thursday and saturdays you put the vest on before you leave or go in and it’s a work day training?

You can schedule it like that or you can just go day by day. When our puppies are wearing their vests they are not allowed to greet people. When they are not wearing their vest we sometimes let them greet people, but not always. The thing to remember is that you want to teach your puppy right from day one that he doesn't get to say hi to everyone he sees. In fact, he has to ignore most of them. We'll actually be going more in depth on this in our upcoming free video series "The First 30 Days," you can sign up for email notifications by following this link: myservicedogandme.mykajabi.com/p/the-first-30-days or watch for announcements on our Facebook page: facebook.com/My-Service-Dog-and-Me-192107304698266/

I think that’s very risky. Even if there aren’t a lot of dogs, parvovirus very hardy. It can be on peoples shoes, and ending up on the floor. Maybe I feel like this because I almost lost a puppy to parvo. She came home from the shelter with it. Ended up having to go into the hospital for 9 days. They offered me a new puppy, but I couldn’t. I wanted her.

I am very sorry to hear about your puppy. That is truly awful. As I said in the video, we work very closely with our vet, and she agrees with how we socialize our puppies, as has every vet I have worked with in the last 10 years. However, we are also in the midwest, and there are probably other parts of the country where the advice may be different. Here is a link to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's position statement on socializing puppies if you are interested in reading a little more about why we do things this way. But I always recommend working closely with your vet and doing whatever makes you and your vet comfortable. avsab.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Puppy_Socialization_Position_Statement_Download_-_10-3-14.pdf

So this isn't really on topic since he isn't a service dog and it's super long but you really seem to know what you're talking about! I'm working with an adult rescue dog who had little to no socialization as a puppy. He grew up on a farm where he was severely neglected and rarely if ever saw strangers. I live in the city and would love to be able to take him out in pet friendly public spaces, but he is fearful of strangers who get too close to him and is very protective of my house. Since I adopted him I've been taking him out and rewarding him every time he sees a stranger but he still barks and sometimes tries to lunge at a stranger who suddenly appears in his bubble. He also gets really stressed out at the vet and no groomer will touch him. I've been working with him for about 6 months and haven't seen much progress. Do you have any other recommendations for ways to help him? I've talked to my vet about anxiety meds and he says we should try training first but the only trainer willing to work with him in my area quoted me $700 for one session and seems to be overpromising. That's also way out of my price range.

Your videos are very informative and helpful in terms of training my service dog. I agree with most of your philosophies and training tips. However, I could never, ever consider taking an unvaccinated pup outside of my house or enclosed backyard. I work for a rescue and I have lost between 50-60 of my puppies from litters to Parvo and Distemper. Almost all of these dogs had never left my house since birth. Parvo and Distemper both entered my house at the same time and I don’t live in a high disease area. Especially with new research saying it can live in the ground for up to 10 years. I still love watching your videos, but I would advise others to try to find other ways around risking your dogs life. Such as the research that suggests vaccinating puppies every 2 weeks from 6-8 weeks on.
@myservicedogandme6 жыл бұрын
I agree, everyone needs to do their own research, work very closely with their vet, and take the health of the individual puppy into account when making this decision. I'm actually thinking of taking this video down a filming a more in depth explanation to make sure I've covered that part enough. As I said in the video, we work very closely with our vet, and she agrees with how we socialize our puppies, as has every vet I have worked with in the last 10 years. A lot of it is about balance. Even just taking a puppy to the homes of trusted friends or family members can make a huge impact on socialization as can taking conscious effort to provide socialization inside your own home. Here is a link to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's position statement on socializing puppies if you are interested in reading a little more about why we do things this way. But I always recommend working closely with your vet and doing whatever makes you and your vet comfortable. avsab.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Puppy_Socialization_Position_Statement_Download_-_10-3-14.pdf Show less 1 REPLY Hide replies

My Dog and Me, LLC Thank you for the extra information. I definitely agree with the importance of early socialization, I just personally would never take an unvaccinated pup out in public. I definitely agree with the aspect of taking them to a friends house and such, but also bringing the socialization into the home. I wouldn’t take the video down, you did state all of those important points in the video. I was just sharing my personal beliefs.

It is important to remember that many, many more dogs are euthanized or relinquished due to behavior issues (that might have been helped by appropriate early socialization) than are lost to distemper and parvo combined.
