when my former boyfriend first bought our sumatran water monitor, the ex thought he was just going to outright pick it up. sammy, that was our monitor's name, latched on, the ex flung his arm and sammy went flying. sammy ended up under the hood of our stove, thank God I wasnt cooking at the time. from that point, the ex didn't want anything to do with it. so one night, I filled up the tub with Luke warm water, put on my gloves and gently put my hand under him and carried him into the bathroom. he at first gave me some hissing and slight tail flicks, but never tried to bite me. I lowered him into the tub and he swam so much, he seemed to love that. that was our nightly ritual and I seemed to "tame him".. when I did all of the sudden my ex took credit for taming him and pretty much took sammy away from me. I do miss sammy very much, but I don't miss the claws 😂

Yes, selective breeding of temperaments. I think some of these t is genetic as far as reactiveness verses willingness to go right into Thinking mode where new ideas and behavior will be learned. Pre programmed instinct to Run verses willingness to think and make sense of a scenario. That appears quite genetic and inheritable

Bubblegum is stunning. What a sweetheart. Years ago a teen who lived nearby had a green iguana. He would bring his lizard down to visit with me. The kid had definitely socialized the iguana…what a cuddle bug. Very gentle with me ..I’m disabled by chronic severe pain…and would sit in my lap and get his scratches and massage from me. Fell in love. If I weren’t so ill I’d have a lizard but couldn’t take poor care of one. Grew up in the Southwest when lizards were plentiful…not as they are now…and the wild ones would interact with me. One big old horned lizard would appear as soon as I came out to play to get his petting. I was maybe 4 or 5 at that point. My father taught me how to handle them properly and gently.

Huge difference between back yard breeders 'for a living' vs actual enjoyers with intentions past the $
@wraith13206 ай бұрын
Yes. No one who is only doing it “for a living”-without any passion or goals beyond making a quick buck-should work with animals period, IMHO. 😔 There are plenty of ways to “make a living” or start a small business… they can pick something that doesn’t involve the welfare of entirely dependent, living, feeling beings.
@YochevedDesigns6 ай бұрын
I used to breed champion Australian Shepherds. I lost money on every litter. I never let them leave my house until they were at least 10 weeks old because those last two weeks are so important for building confidence and independence. They are leash trained and sit on command. They've had both sets of shots and been microchipped. Prospective owners and extensively vetted. The reason I stopped is because Assies are not for everyone, and there were too many at our local rescue. Now I work strictly with dog and cat rescue organizations. Mutt or show quality, every animal deserves the perfect home.

My old riding coach always had barn kittens out of her barn cats (she should have been spaying, I know). She always used grandchildren to tame barn kittens so she could more easily find homes for them; that early interaction was key, and made them much more adoptable.

Just a tiny reminder to new keepers that when you help with shed make sure you don’t rip it off and whatnot. If it’s not ready it can be painful to remove and then you’re losing trust with the animal. If you do it right the animal may even seek your assistance because they realize you can help.

We have a water monitor that we are the 3rd owner of. The original owner claimed that he got her from NERD he then sold her to a small local exotic pet store which is where we got her from. She is a very sweet girl. She never even tries to bite us at all. She even tries her best not to scratch me (she isn't so gentle with my husband 😂). We have had her home for 2 weeks today. Her name was Penny. But her name now is Nifty and she is absolutely precious. Anyway I say all of that just to that if it is true that she came from NERD than even though it took a string of events for her to end up with us.(she is how we where introduced to your channel) We thank you so much for facilitating the birth and initial care of our baby girl. ❤😊
