Continuing the journey of COVID coverage in Uttar Pradesh's hinterland, Barkha Dutt talks to crematorium staffs and volunteers at a funeral site in Varanasi. These are people who wash the bodies before they are cremated as per rituals. In these tough times, when most of the families are hesitant to cremate their own loved ones, who succumbed to covid, these volunteers risk their lives and help families to cremate the dead that too without a PPE suit. There's rampant discrimination in the local area against these crematorium staffs who told us that many boycott us in the society. "We are treated as untouchables by everyone around us", one of them tells Mojo Story. The social stigma that arises because of the work they do, creates a societal gap that makes it difficult for them to sustain their livelihood.
