Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve) | Movie Review
Society of the Snow tells the true story of the 1972 plane crash involving members of the Uruguayan rugby team and their ordeal to survive the harrowing events, from the horrific crash itself to the weeks of being trapped on the mountain with no hope of being found and rescued. Eventually they resorted to consuming the dead bodies of their fellow plane passengers/team members in order to survive. La Sociedad de la Nieve is scheduled for release on January 4, 2024, on ‪@Netflix‬.

It wasn't cannibalism because they didn't kill them for eat. They ate those who were dead or were dying in time, so it's called antropofagy, which is very different.
@CynsCorner

You don't have to kill someone of your own species and eat them for it to be cannibalism. Cannibalism is simply the act of eating your own species. Whether or not you kill them yourself. Cannibalism noun 1. The eating of human flesh by human beings. 2. The eating of any animal by another individual of the same species.

@@CynsCorner The point of view of the definition of a word in the dictionary is etymological, semantic and general. The point of view of anthropology texts and books is more specific. The suffix "-ism" in cannibalism indicates a tendency, habit, active search or act repeated over time, so it fits worse to the Andean event than "anthropophagy", which represents a specific act of eating human flesh ( and includes other tissues such as bones or brains). In some way we could say that cannibalism is a way of life and anthropophagy an anecdotal life event. Instead of saying you're wrong for using 'cannibalism' I'd say you're being imprecise😅

Yes. That IS the definition of cannibalism. Your reaction to the accurate usage of the term is hyperbolic.

This was not a remake. This movie had the complete and entire collaboration of the survivors AND the family of the ones that died, which is something Alive didn’t have. The survivors have cameos in the movie. Carlitos Páez performs as his own father, he is the one that says the names of the survivors. Dr. Cannessa and Parrado are also in the movie.

I loved this movie and I also loved this review! Only to clarify: The director has stated in many interviews that he tried not to make the movie about any particular character, but about the bond between the survivors and the society they formed and how it worked, and also, and more importantly, about the people that died. Hence the choice to make a non survivor the main character. So that feeling you mention about not feeling connected to many of the characters is intentional. I had the same feeling when I watched for the first time and I also had a difficult time telling them apart. But everything made sense once I listened to the interviews.

Why are you asking why they didn't walk out sooner? Did you not watch the part of the film where three of them tried to walk out in October and they very nearly froze to death at night? This all happened in real life

They tried to go before but it was too cold. After they found the fabric in the tail of the plane they could made the sleeping bag to sleep during the trip.

The first venture out that they made was not to go find help, I believe. If I remember correctly, it was to try to find parts from the portion of the plane that had broken off to see if they could use anything.

This is by far the most eloquent, lucid and intelligent review I have seen... Baffled why you don't have more views... The movie is moving, tragic, and yet it is ultimately uplifting! I've seen it twice, and I know if you invest in it, it rewards you. The actual survivors, and those that did not make it, were incredibly courageous and resourceful. May the light of the many brighten your corner!

Thank you so much - that is very kind of you to say. Agree absolutely with the sentiment about how moving and tragic the film is while also being uplifting. It was a strange combination of emotions this film sparked in me. I feel nothing but admiration and awe for the survivors and what they were able to endure. They were indeed courageous.

I think the director and the survivors have said that the thing about not making some characters protagonists, it's intentional, to see them as a whole, the whole group is the protagonist, and for we to not get attached to one or two in particular and I like that about this movie (sorry I dont' speak english very well, I hope i explained myself)

Something that perhaps the film does not make so clear is the devastation of spending a night outdoors and in the cold. After the expedition to the Summit, Numa, Gustavo and Daniel were extremely exhausted and it took them several days to recover. The same thing happened after the final expedition to the tail of the plane where they were caught in a storm. Therefore, they knew that although they had to make an expedition to leave, at the same time, they had to wait for weather that would allow them to spend a night outside and still conserve energy to continue for several days.

It is interesting you did not get atrached to all the characters. I think that was the intention of the director. Let's remember, we see the movie through Numa's eyes, an outsider, the narrator. He did not know most of the passengers, he is not from the same school, he is not even part of the team. His friend dies at he beginning during crash. This is a very complex movie as human psychology is.

You made a great commentary/review of the movie and the history per se. (As an uruguayan my opinion might be biased) To anyone that is going to watch it try to get on the shoes of the characters, think that those depicted are your real friends, that you are living that crucible. At the end it can be an educating/humbling/inspiring movie for anyone, if it does that for you, try to show it to others.

About the comment that why the movie was released in January and not in October is because they want to release the anniversary of their rescue on December 22....the director wanted to have it on the big screen before going on Netflix. I am sure you can appreciate more on the big screen.

Thanks for your review. I found it very nice and inspiring. This is a Touching story. I must read the book. I had the pleasure to knew Javier Methol personally when I was working in the same firm he was a retired director. He was an special person, the kindest person you could know. I also knew some of the mothers of the people that didn't returned. They ruled a public library "Our sons" in memory of theyr children. One interesting fact of the movie is that Coche Inciarte, one o f the survivors died in July 2023 at 75, The film director flew to Uruguay and showed the draft of the film to him in a private session at the cinema before anyone else.

En algunas partes del mundo seguramente la película no toca como si lo hace en ésta parte del mundo, seguramente porque la cultura y la forma de vida es muy diferente, por ejemplo: en el río de la plata nos saludamos con un beso, eso es impensado en USA. All the acting and life in the fuselage, was filmed in some mountains in Spain, for practical and logistical reasons, the production is Spanish, and also being in the Andes is dangerous to stay many days there, but all the backgrounds you see in the movie, are real Andes, the same places where they were, the director went a couple of times to shoot a lot of backgrounds in the real place, the same the aerial shots are the real Andes, which then by CGI were added to what was filmed in Spain, so you are seeing an exact representation of how that place looks like, unlike Viven, the other movie with Ethan Hawke, which was filmed in Canada, nothing to do with The Andes, which is much more immense, is the largest mountain range on the planet, runs through all of South America from end to end.

If you liked this movie, I recommend EVEREST, based on a true story about a tragic event that happened in 1996, due to bad decisions by the guides who took groups of people up the mountain, in addition to delays in going up and down, there were many people. at that time going up and down at the same time, which caused traffic jams and delays, also due to bad luck and a storm that was downplayed, all of these factors caused a great tragedy. It is very good and very desperate too, many well-known actors participate such as: Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Robin Wright, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal @@CynsCorner
