#sociology #alevelsociology #soced What is cultural capital? A concept often confused with cultural deprivation, cultural capital measures the value of an individual's cultural knowledge in a specific field according to Bourdieu. Based upon where and who an individual is with (the field), the value (capital) of their cultural knowledge (habitus) will vary. In many social institutions such as education, politics and the legal system, middle-class cultural knowledge has a high value and this places the working-class at a disadvantage. People often wrongly assume that the working class do not have cultural capital, but when located in working-class fields (e.g. some workplaces) working-class individuals will find their cultural knowledge is valued.
