The difference between a MOBA like League and MMO skin or costume that matters to me is that many of the League skins change the look of the spells and abilities. So not only am I getting a nice looking new skin for my champ, their abilities also change and look different, which to me is more valuable. I don't play that many MMO's but from the ones I did play, the cosmetics simply were not worth it. Sure, I'd look cooler but my abilities look the same with or without it. I don't know enough about game design, but if it is possible for skins in an MMO to change the look of abilities and skills, then I'd be waaay more interested in buying them.

From my experience, cosmetics in MMO's are most of the time just added decorations, like a hat or other gun. With league of legends skins they are trying to redefine a whole character concept.

Some MMOs also sell cosmetics specifically for certain skills or "themes" for your abilities, for example Path of Exile. Other MMOs with more abilities tend to sell these cheaper but since in PoE you often are only using just a few abilities per build I guess they can get away with charging more?

Its funny u mention that, ff xiv, as example, only sells house furniture and gear oriented cosmetics. No animations whatsoever. THAT BEING SAID, modders can completely change both the animations and the vfx of said skills to something completely different, I even remember seeing someone that changed the moveset of samurai to the animations of vergil from devil may cry. So the game allows for that sort of change but the developers never tried to dip into this sort of skill cosmetics market. Why? Is anybodies guess.

I haven't played a lot of multiplayer games. But in league Skins not only change the visual effects but also the sound effects and the sound effects play a big part in expressing the fantasy of a skin. Some skins make you feel like you are playing a different character. See High Noon Jhin a few years back. Also, the somewhat "cartoony" art style makes it easy for a Futuristic robot, a demon cowboy and a lady in a swimsuit be in the same game and nothing will feel out of place.

The thing about cosmetics in MMO is that it runs the risk of compromising some aspects of the game like visual progression. I'm sure there's plenty of cosmetics they can produce that aren't strictly gear related though.

Something I think would be cool is cosmetics like animations. Thats a big part of why legendary skins in League are so well regarded, the most important thing they change is the animations, from the way your character runs to how they swing a sword. I like the idea of those kinds of cosmetics in an MMO. It especially lets people who only play one character really pump up their main further by alowwing them to customize the way they run and jump and sword their sword. It has no gameplay effects, but it really changes how gameplay feels. It could be split up like Dota 2 customization aswell. So if you really like one of the axe animations you can buy for 2 dollars then you can just get that one new animation set. And if you want to spend a bit on your main you can mix and match different types of animation customizations, like you can maybe make your characetr run like hes drunk but fist fight like a shaolin monk, creating your own fantasy of a drunken fighter without that actually being a class in the game. Same with if you're a fan of berserkers you can maybe pay for an animation set when your character uses only one hand for his giant two-handed sword, and another which makes him sprint like a raging bull. Or on the flip side you can get an animation set that makes your warrior very graceful and fluid like a samurai or something like that. The class is the same but the amount of characetr fantasies you can turn that class into is greatly expaded. This is only enhanced by spell effects you might be able to buy aswell, just like with a LoL skin. You could really turn a handful of classes into a thousand class fantasies if you just pump out enough animations and spell effects people get to play with. I think it would sell like crazy and none of it has anything to do with progression. Armor and so on remains sacred. Though with armor I think theres things they can do aswell, like allowing people to buy alterations to armor they already have. But that would kind of force them to introduce a transmog system since buying an altered look of a gear you will eventually swap out kind of sucks. So what they can otherwise do is give people 2 sets of armor. The real gameplay armor and "casual clothes" roleplaying armor. If they had something like this they could sell roleplaying armor like suits from Piltover and stuff. But I personally think the animations thing would be enough. Especially since they could expand it further to voice lines and emotes aswell, two thinsg that league skins also get. What I hope they don't do is bring in a bunch of League skins lines. I really don't want to see someone running around in Shurima in full PROJECT sci-fi robot armor or a candy cane pink-bearded freljordian.

League of Legends style skins would be great for the MMO I think. By that I mean things you can buy that change the animations and spell effects of your character. Legendary skins in Leagye does all that, new animations, new efefcts, new voice lines, new everything. Thats what the MMO should do aswell, except for the actual armor of the skin. Armor I think should be just progression, but that doesn't matter if you can get all the other cool stuff. Like if you're playing a fox person you'd most liekly be mroe hyped about being able to give yourself 6 tails instead of one, and you can make them glow, and they her completely unique animations for everything you do in the game, and you can make your ears sharper and glowing and your eyes and the way you run and the way you swing a sword the way your character sounds. When you can change all that shit it you don't need the ability to buy a suit of armor aswell. The way your character moves is 100 times more important. It's basically like Arcana skins in Dota 2. It changes the base model, the animations, the effects, the voice lines but you can still slap all the other armor on top of that. I think it is also a genius way to increase the amount of class fantasies you can put in the game. For example if you play a warrior and you want to be berserker guy you can buy animations that make your character run like a raging bull while swinging his 2h sword with only one hand, but if you want to be more of a blademaster you can buy elegant animations that makes your character swing the sword like a paint brush. Thats one class fulfilling two class fantasies better than any class in wow ever has simply by letting you change the way your character moves. We know that Riot is capable of doing this because that is exactly what they league skins do. Gameplay wise Darius doesn't change when you put on his Basketball skin, and it doesn't change when you put on his God King skin, yet they both feel completely different and fulfill different fantasies. Thats the shit you should be able to do to your MMO character. They won't need to sell armor pieces. Though they could sell roleplaying armor, I wouldn't mind that. Like maybe everyone gets "casual clothes" that your character might wear in cities and stuff if you toggle it to automatically swap. They could sell a bunch of that stuff. The only reason why I don't want actual costumes is because I don't want a transmog system in the game. Though that too depends on how good the armor variety is. If armor changes based on what region you're from then thats good, no transmog required, but if every type of character shares the same armor like in WoW then I would like a transmog system because I think it looks stupid when characters don't look like they fit the lore. I don't want to see a Noxian wearing samurai armor.

In regards to WoW: They should add your party and raid team to the WoW loading screens, like the League of Legends loadings screen at the start of the match. You could then sell cosmetic borders and weird things to pimp the loading screen. Another thing is they should add a necromancer skin to Warlocks that just change all of their spells to fit Necromancers. Make it paid only, sure. People would buy it.

12:28 -> if it's just a one time thing, that would be perfectly fine. Everyone that's actually serious about the game will pay the one time inventory slot augment and then everything else will be only cosmetics for the rest of the game's lifespan. If there are new pay for power options coming out regularly and you absolutely need to get them to stay competitive in the game, that's where it becomes wrong, in my opinion.

To me the big difference between skins in League of Legends and costumes/skins in an MMO is that LoL has like 140 champions they can sell skins for while most people will only play 1 to 2 characters in an MMO (although there are psychopaths that have like 10 alts). Sure, no one will play and buy skins for every single champion, but most people will play a handful of champions and be enticed to buy skins for them. Then again, an MMO has other ways of selling cosmetics apart from just costumes, like mounts and pets for instance. So who knows, maybe it can work.

I think no one has issues with skins in LoL because like the guy in chat said, you don't earn the skins in LoL. Skins are purely cosmetic. There's almost 0 alternative to show off something you earned. The progression of LoL and the thing that drives players to PLAY LoL is not cosmetics. Cosmetics are huge driving factor for a variety of types of content in MMOs, which is why the game suffers when the monetization is so heavily modeled around cosmetics.

I kinda doubt people would be excited and not upset if riot just reused all their skins from league into their mmo. Also how would that theoretically even work, all of riots skins are based around individual champions, not an entire race. Plus people would want to be unique, especially in an MMO, no one would be up for the idea that everyone is wandering around looking the same with the same skins. I think the only things they can take cosmetically from league are the themes and concepts for cosmetics but they'd have to still make unique changes to keep people interested, in my opinion

playing warframe taught me a lesson on paying vs playing could i grind for 10 hours and get a new prime weapon? probably or could i just use 3 hours wage from my job to buy the weapon off the market chat? its all give and take, for someone who works 40 hours a week, it's almost always worth to just buy an item or upgrade with real money straight up because of the time you would be investing to get it for free just isnt available to you. now it changes with how many games you play and how often. Lets say if you only play Warframe, and have no quarrel with playing it all weekend long or all evening long, then spending for an item becomes less appealing. but if you play Warframe, Tarkov, Minecraft, COD, Overwatch, or whatever, and maybe cant play all weekend and evening long, then the decision to spend becomes alot easier. its the same philosophy as fast-passes in amusement parks. do you spend 80 extra dollars to go on rides constantly and repeatedly, or do you save the $80 and instead wait in the longer lines and go on less rides in a day

I dislike free to play games. A lot of the part of playing games for me, is progression, not making my character ‘stronger’ , but also look better. These days with things like Halo Infinite , you can already just buy the best looking thing in store, thats one entire aspect gone from the game. There’s also a thing where whenever a free to play game lacks basic features or has problems, people just say “but its free why even complain just play” . Sad that every game is basically like this these days. That being said i play Path of Exile basically every league and although thats not an MMO i guess it shows if the gameplay is there (most times) it can work. Idk.

@schooliscool4578
@schooliscool4578 8 ай бұрын
This sounds like a great system at first until you consider the fact that the game, upon launch, will have a sign saying "20 hours of playtime left". Idk about you but I would be scared of playing, I would try to be perfectly efficient with every minute, would be scared of afking/chilling and I'd feel my minutes running out, and would feel discouraged if I spent time and didnt achieve anything in-game. Furthermore, coming up with a fair amount of time in a sub model would be almost impossible, because if you're too generous people will literally just buy it once and play for the next 8 months on and off using only 1 month worth of sub money, and if they make it too small it just gets horrible for the player, there's really no winning for the company in this type of model. People who are hard addicted and wanna play all day every day would be forced to spend way more money than they do with this model. I do agree that a sub with a due date DOES feel like a job and isn't good, I'd rather flat out trust riot and buy the game for like 50$ or obviously ideally play for free and have the game be funded by skins. Most MMOs crumble because of monetization but if anyone can get it right, its the king of f2p; riot. If riot aren't able to monetize this game while keeping it f2p and not holding quality of life hostage then MMO's are most likely just a dead genre that won't be worth pursuing, riot is kinda the last hope.

I was glad to see that Greg and the team at Riot are so forthcoming about the upcoming MMO, but damn, I wish this interview was done by just about anyone else. This guys ability to interview and ask concise coherent questions is just nonexistent. This is the third time I've tried to watch this interview, I've quit halfway through solely due to the interviewer.

P2W is better than sub, as long as the things you can pay for are capped, and easily achievable. For example if you spend 10$ for 2 hours of grind, and the grind is 10 hours, then p2w is fine, its when p2w saves you 500 hours that the game isnt worth playing anymore. Plus comsetics are just going to be nuts anyway.

Bad take p2w is a major turn off for most people and I don’t think riot is stupid enough to risk it there’s a reason wow and ff14 are still the biggest mmos

Personally as someone that jumps between mmos, NOTHING beats a good sub mode. As much as he can say 'oh its cosmetic only' it is still a very finnicky thing to do in a f2p game. I give as an example phatansy star online 2 ngs. The game is f2p, it does have p2w elements but not only that, 99.99% of the ingame cosmetics are bought through gatchas. I keep hearing from my alliance members in that game how they love to not pay a sub but at the same time they spend 100usd every 2 weeks in gatchas to get cosmetics, which I'd like to remind u, all cosmetics are locked behind a pay wall. So u might grind and all but u will never look 'good' without e pending money. And like ppl in ffxiv say 'Glam is the TRUE end game'
@antsteng862
@antsteng862 Жыл бұрын
But the big problem is people who don’t have the money to pay monthly for a game as cosmetics is ALWAYS a choice regardless of peer pressure or just thinking it looks sick. I played through League since season 4 and I didn’t spend a single dime and I only got skins cuz they gave us loot boxes to get skins. I play Valorant now as well and I did spend on some skins cuz I thought it was sick. Games with f2p is always better at least in my opinion as my broke friends can hop on as well and we can all just have a good time

Adding on valorant also allows f2p players to pick up skins for guns in game so they can still enjoy skins without paying I say it’s a win win

F2P aren't really good for MMOs unless you really don't care about cosmectics. For a MMO to generate profit being F2P they'll have to invest really hard in monetization even if it's not "P2W" it's gonna be bad for a huge part of the playerbase. It's not up to me but I find a barrier of entry healthier for the game and it's community, when you have a P2P system only those really interested in playing will pay for it while also keeping some kids/teens out of the game
@f4ephilosophy691

Its 100% going to be F2P, Riot has had far to much success with the model (Val, and LoL) to quit now. Question is how will they handle it? Like Soda said a little P2W isnt a bad thing if the game is free, its like Path Of Exile, sure you dont have to spend money but there is a cost to entry for late game content where you pretty much have to have stash tabs.
@Frey_64
@Frey_64 Жыл бұрын
@@f4ephilosophy691 yeah, it all depends on gearing and crafting systems we might get some tipe of stash tab we pretty much need for endgame content. also going the cosmetic route with skills/abilities also changing its the way to go.

I hope the riot game is going to be with sub , why ? cause i dont want to buy skins for my charackter to make him look cool i want to beat the shit out of hard bosses to get the cool stuff and look good its more fun if you have the "Epic" looking gear when you earned it in game without paying for a good look

Sub will be the worst thing to have. I would rather buy it once and have it always then sub every month to play. Like the dude said when i pay and can't play that time its wasted money and if feels stupid. Also just because you don't want to buy skin's doesn't mean others won't. The amount if money some people spend on skins is huge. To the point that that 1% of thr player base spends as if all 100% spend like 5-10$ per month.
