A short clip showing how reactive sodium is. A small piece of sodium is dropped into a crystallization dish with water and a few drops of phenolphthalein. The indicator shows that a basic reaction is occurring in the water, and the gas formed is hydrogen.
2Na+2H2O→2NaOH + H2.
2 Sodium + 2 water → 2 sodiumhydroxide (base) + hydrogen gas.
More information about why metals in group one react violently can be found in Chemistry 9, the book available on Apple Books by Kaj Schmidt.
