Sodium Ion extreme discharge test!!!!

In this video I will discharge a fully charged Sodium Ion cell down to zero volts or as low as it will allow. I will fully recharge it again at the recommended maximum charge current (in this case 1C) and complete another normal (0.5C) discharge to see if any adverse affects have occurred to the cell. I will monitor the temperature of the cell as well. This test should confirm that this is truly a Sodium Ion cell and not a cheap lithium ion cell relabelled as Sodium.

Hello again, it seems the batterys can perform very well in cold conditions maybe you can try put some in the fridge - like minus 20⁰c - and test how they perform as stated 90% capacity. Good luck 🍀

1634mAh to 1475mAh - this is about 10 percent loss of capacity after one cycle to zero volts! 9 more tests are needed to kill the battery completely! ;-)

Your math are wrong....10% each cycle will not lead to 0% in 10'cycles, far from it.

At the end of the video, you can see the second test was cut off at 1.5v. The first test, if you watch about frame-by-frame, you can see it is about the same, 1475mAh when the battery reaches 1.5v. Seems the same unless I'm misunderstanding settings on the equipment

I thought about to use it for my scooter - but in my opinion the drop of voltage is a way too much during cycling. The speed of the motor will be to low in my 48V scooter with a 16S but too high with a 20S

Yeah these sodium ion batteries need higher voltage controller like one that can support 120V max so you have enough voltage at end of discharge. Motors actually don't care if you run them at higher voltage because good motor controllers can limit rpm and boost battery current to higher phase amps and reduce high battery voltage to lower phase voltage.

on the bright side though, it won't starve to death due to low voltage. which mean you can leave it without charging as long as you want. the voltage drop maybe won't be a problem with more advanced BMS

Does it hurt to charge a sodium ion battery to 4.3 volts? I have a DIY power bank that usually takes 2 lithium batteries so it is set to turn off at 4.2 volts but I want to use 18650 sodium ion batteries that are rated at 4.0.

The battery load tester that I have is no longer available. The Chinese electronic market changes quite rapidly. I suggest perusing all the models available on AliExpress or Amazon and choose which one has the best rating and the features you're looking for.

It seems only the chinese are bringing this tech to the market so it makes me doubt a lot, what is the catch? why not other companies have developed such thing? All seems too good to be true, I think this might be a Li-ion battery with a diferent chemistry and maybe some Na-ion as well, some kind of hybrid.

Apparently sodium ion is old tech. Just not popular until recently. With further r&d it has the potential to get better but never will be as good as Lipo or lifepo4 but will have the advantage of being much cheaper.

It can't really. But due to the vagarities of the sodium ion chemistry, you're able to charge it 4.1 volts in absorption. It will then relax to 3.8v with its nominal at 3.1 volts. I know it's a very weird voltage swing. But keep in mind lithium ion charges to 4.2 volts with a nominal of 3.7. and lithium iron phosphate charge to 3.65 volt with a nominal voltage of 3.2. lithium ion and sodium ion have a straight discharge curve whereas lithium iron phosphate almost immediately drops down to 3.3/3.2 volts and hangs there the majority it's discharge cycle. So really what you're seeing here is just the weirdness of the chemistry

aww common it could be just a be fake lithium ion battery which usually has 1000mah+ unless u puncture it with nail you could never determine if its sodium ion or fake lithium ion

@diylithiumguy it's going to be challenging providing suitable power to the motor speed controller on the electric bike. I have a few ideas I'm going to experiment with to see how it works. I love that I cannot destructively over discharge these cells. I'm going to take advantage of that. I intended to have everything done by now but life got in the way.

@@diyelectrified1289 The sodium ion are great for solar, it makes it very easy to track state of charge etc. I think it'll open up more lifepo4 availability for motor vehicles / bikes etc

I bought from the manufacturer. They don't indicate much on the label that I could make use of. The charge/discharge profile falls in line with what is expected for sodium ion.
