Hearing Falcon tell off Andreas for his selfishness and deception makes me wonder how he came to be Sir Handel! How did he go from lecturing Andreas about looking after his passengers to purposely derailing himself and destroying his firebars? I know Andreas is the main focus here, but Sir Handel's seemingly inverted character arc is a big point of intrigue.

I think I have a theory about the firebars. If what we saw in Duncan Gets Spooked is true, something must have happened to the SkR's original number 7. Maybe that traumatised Sir Handel and he couldn't tell Peter Sam about it when he returned from the Taylynn Railway. It's a bit of a sketchy guess, but still.

I know he ended up being used for a boat, but I do hope we'll get to learn more about Andreas' ultimate fate. For all we know, he could still be out there, whether taken out of the boat and used in something else (BIG SPOILERS: Much like how Atlas was used as a replacement for the original steam boiler in the Old Mill) or had been preserved as a boat, rather than being scrapped. After all, any engine deserves a better fate than scrapping, and many, many years of being a steam launch probably would've mellowed even an engine like Andreas out.

The comparisons of Andreas to Duncan I'm seeing in the comments are very interesting and got me thinking about their similarities and differences. Fair warning, I'm thinking as I write. Andreas was a selfish, elitist snob. He looked down on everyone else, called Atlas names multiple times, and abandoned a passenger to prove his superiority by not being late. He objected to any goods work and refused to change despite getting multiple chances and even the threat of being sent away or turned into a generator. Duncan, like Andreas, can be abrasive and has occasionally exhibited prejudice against other engines (though his was less class-based like Andreas and more of a typical anti-diesel sentiment). He's also done some very selfish things like stranding his passengers on the viaduct. On the other hand, Duncan's been far more willing to change and learn from his mistakes. He made up with Rusty after the diesel helped him and admitted stopping on the viaduct was wrong after hearing Rheneas's tale. He's a hard worker who'll do any job despite his complaining, and for all his bluntness and occasional rudeness, he generally means well according to Peter Sam. He also has more of an excuse for his attitude; since he used to work in a factory and the roughness of the place rubbed off on him. Even his halting on the viaduct, while undoubtedly wrong and damaging to the railway's reputation, was more understandable than Andreas leaving a passenger behind given their respective motives. Duncan was protesting being (as he saw it) unfairly neglected after years of loyal service to the company. Andreas, by contrast, was just trying to prove his superiority over the other Mid Sodor engines. I think this says a lot about who each engine is. Andreas wanted to show that he was *better* than everyone else; Duncan wanted to be treated the *same* as everyone else. And again, unlike Andreas, Duncan later realized he was wrong and admitted as much to Skarloey. I suppose at the end of the day, Duncan's issues stem more from a short fuse and a strong, if often misplaced, sense of justice rather than arrogance like Andreas's problems. He has his flaws and often acts out in haste, but he still does his share of work and he's willing to recognize his mistakes if someone can show him why he was wrong. In short, for all his flaws, Duncan *tries* to be a good engine, whereas Andreas never did. And their respective fates, one living a happy life and the other sent away, could not be more fitting.

The Andreas-two parter was quite interesting. I certainly didn't expect Andreas being turned into a boat, I thought he was merely sent away. It also shows Falcon/Sir Handel's true personality, though he might be grumpy and inconsiderate at times, he isn't hot-headed and arrogant as Andreas was; and he never searches for problems or negative effects to the railway. The plot twist on Atlas was also something I didn't see coming, a railway (though apparently a small one) that was completely unknown to Charlie Hatt; and at Harwick, too. STMY has been going well and the stories are excellent. Well done! Keep up the good work!

Awesome. At first I thought the ending was anti-climactic, but then I realized the punishment fits Andreas. He complained about dirty work and commented on the ridiculousness of Stanley being turned into a pumping-engine, but then he got turned into a dirty maintenance boat. A cruel twist of irony, I must say. I can't wait to hear about Atlas and that tramway; that left me with so many questions! On another note, your narrating was improved so much. I remember your first episodes with rushed, nervous narrating, and then to now; you're calm, engaged, and you can really sense the emotions in the story through your voice. Keep it up, because this series is only getting better. Cheers!
@streamlinedengine9 жыл бұрын
Glad to see Falcon/Sir Handel display his wisdom side, and how Duke and Lily acted as the more senior character! The plot twisted so tightly at the end caught me completely off guard, that tramway up at Harwick wasn't mentioned in IoS by any chance? However, I must say I'm quite impressed by the MSR's extraordinarily good skill at converting engines, I mean Stanley to a pumping engine, Smudger a generator, and Andreas to a boat, perhaps that was why they failed in finance later. That wasn't quite a serious lie Andreas told, but it was crucial to define an engine's mentality and attitude: passengers were just a tool of keeping his reputation, and how they were treated did not really matter to him, meanwhile he felt perfectly easy to lie to everyone for this. But that raised another question: if Andreas only considered passengers as a tool to no importance, then why did he bother to lie?

Although we may never know what officially happened to Andreas, this is my theory: The MSR manager realizes that the last incident isn't Andreas' fault, so he decides to give him a final chance. Andreas is already a steamboat, and docked in America. Manager thinks he was scrapped, and requests that someone find him. Years later, he's found in a maritime museum and restored. By this time, his attitude is completely changed. He is sent to work on the Skarloey Railway as their number 11. He apologizes to Atlas and puts Duncan in his place when he starts acting cocky like he usually does.

Wow, that's quite a dramatic conclusion. I can't help be feel pity for Andreas and I suspect that's how you intended it. I could be wrong but I assume he was new, or at least not very old, when he arrived on the MSR and his initial conceitedness was much like that of Godred and 'Lord Harry' (now Patrick). He thought he was a cut above the other engines and as such felt he needed to show it by running on or ahead of time. So much so that he ignored a not-so-late passenger, and lied about it to his driver so that he didn't have to wait. After lying to his driver, he then continued the ruse in hopes that he would get away with it. As it so often does with such things, this bite him on the behind. This is something children and young adults generally have to learn, though sadly some don't. It led to something akin to the boy who cried wolf in that due to his past actions, when he was in fact innocent, no-one trusted him. An excellent bit of storytelling. Nice one. I do hope we get to find out what became of Atlas, and Andreas too.

The narrator said that Lily was a couple of minutes late, but then Lily herself says that Anderas would only be leaving one minute late.
@WildNorWester6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but connecting trains aren't scheduled for the exact same time. Otherwise there wouldn't be time for the passengers to go from one train to the other.

Oh yeah, that does make sense. Good point, Dan.

So the driver and guard jumped clear. Where's the fireman?

Really? I thought that was only true on the miniature engines.

2 things 1. is the route you used for the MSR the Arlesdale railway or is it a new route? 2. when Stanley spoke to Andreas is there an actual model for Stanley as a generator? Thanks Also Another Absolutely wonderful video

Hopefully we won't encounter anymore "#2s" that are converted into a different machine (Especially Edward). But as fun as this story was, how could Andreas become a boat? Would his frame become a hull or something like that?
@WildNorWester9 жыл бұрын
+icverano525 He's mounted in an already existing boat, and his cylinders adapted to drive the boat's propeller.

***** I see. That would be interesting to see in visuals, whether or not we do. :D

How Andreas can whistle without a driver and fireman?
@Damocles1789 жыл бұрын
Well that was quite interesting. I like how this deals with the harsh reality of constantly falling out of line and expecting another chance all the time. Admit-tingly I'm curious what Andreas looked like after being converted into a boat. I know that steam driven vessels did exist but where did you get the idea for Andreas to be converted? Was there a real life steam train that was converted into a Steam Launch? I've just never heard of such a thing. On another note it was quite a twist to have the trucks stand up for another engine. True trucks do take a shine to certain engines (As shown in Oliver Owns Up) but wow to actually see them stand up for one was something. Andreas fate at the end was sort of bitter sweet though he brought it all on himself it was the trucks that delivered the final blow and thus it wasn't entirely his fault he crashed through the buffers but I like wee twists like that as anyone can be a victim of circumstance. Andreas did provoke them but at the same time if they'd decided to push him for no reason at all (instead of standing up for Atlas); he would have ended up getting blamed anyway :)
@WildNorWester9 жыл бұрын
+Damocles178 Oh, the idea for Andreas ties into another idea that's yet to be revealed. Let's just say that 'Last Straw' will be a bit of a game-changer.
@Damocles1789 жыл бұрын
Ah sounds good; I look forward to that. It's nice to be able to handle these sort of things without becoming too bogged down in facts as facts can get in the way of a good story if overdone so I'm pleased to see you get the balance right. :)

For my case it’s the trucks fault that andreas crashed and caused the manager to send andreas away in disgrace from the msr
@elmasterdezoologia66412 жыл бұрын
The trucks actually gave Andreas the fate he deserved. They may be at fault, but I won't blame them.

Do you plan on doing a model of Stanley?
@connorflaherty1759 жыл бұрын
Lily using her philosophy that the people must be looked after is never going to get old, because, as Henrietta stated in TATHP, Sudrians look after their own, and Andreas is not a sudrian engine if he doesn't look after the sudrian people. I was thinking he would be scrapped, but at least he got what he deserved. And we can now safely say that Atlas is not the old mill, although I knew he would be voiced by Luke Ryan, but having the same voice actor doesn't mean they're the same character. Also, did you use a freeze frame at 13:33?
@WildNorWester9 жыл бұрын
+Connor Flaherty That's not a freeze frame. I can understand how it may look that way, though. If you look at Duke's smokestack, you can see the smoke going up.
