There is also a method to keep the large eye needle on the thread... thread the needle with a comfortable length tail of thread passed the eye, then take a stitch or two directly through the cross section of the working length of the thread, ( somewhat near the needle) pull through.. while holding the tail alongside the working length, it forms a type of slip knot as the thread inverts on itself.
