Sofia Coppola Talks Teen Girls, Sexual Desire and Her New Film ‘The Beguiled’

No one has captured the pastel world of the trapped, bored and aimless on film like Sofia Coppola.
In this episode of VICE Talks Film, VICE's Hannah Ewens meets the writer and director at Claridge’s in West London to discuss her continuing commitment to showing the realistic life of teenage girls onscreen.
In her new southern gothic comedy, ‘The Beguiled’, starring Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell, a wounded enemy soldier is taken into a tiny all-girls school to recover and becomes the object of interest for all the women in the house. Here she discusses the dark film that she received Best Director for this year at Cannes - the second woman ever to win this prize - and the topics of sexual frustration, female communication and the intricate ways in which a woman's desire changes with age.

Sofia used to come to a restaurant in Chelsea where I worked as a maitre d' over a decade ago, and her vibe was always just phenomenal. Really down to earth; I just loved seeing her. I never told her how much I admired her work (or even that I knew who she was, though she knew I knew because the reservation was always under her name), but she would say hi to me the subsequent times she came, and there was always this look she would give me (she communicates a lot with her eyes), like "Hi, I remember you." She has this amazing quality to her that's so endearing, and I think all her films have that sort of finesse and humanity that's so lacking nowadays.

I think she seems to take much care is taken with developing the characters that they present both verbally and physically as very communicative and believable. I seriously love Lost in Translation. Its in my top 10. Admittedly I'm a bit quirky and have a top 10 that only makes sense to me.
