The difference is that they are native English speakers. I am a native Spanish speaker, and I can produce successfully any Spanish accent I want. Same thing with people like Nicole Kidman. She may be Australian, but she could do any English accent. There’s a difference. Sophia speaks Spanish.

Spanish accent from Spain is extremely difficult to imitate, very hard for any of us Latinamericans and for Spanish to imitate Latinamerica accent. Each and every country of Latinamerica have a different accent, just like English speaking countries have theirs. But in Mexico there are like 25 different accents within the same country and we ca not imitate each other. But Sofía Vergara can do any Spanish accent I suppose, she's an actress.

Omg I hear saying this and and I agree with her 1,000 % . I have 30 years in this country, went to HS here, and did two years in college, and I still have that accent. I already gave up, and I'm 50 years old. Now I say if you understand me, it is good enough. It was so hard for me to learn English, crying to sleep before I went to school until I got it, and I was so proud of myself. God bless America 🇺🇸 where i already made so many dreams come true!!!

That was a really stupid comparison he made. They didn't need to learn another language, Sofía had to. She had to learn to think in English which is essential in mastering another language, you can't be fluent in the language if you keep translating it in your head from your mother tongue. I bet neither Nicole nor Cate would be able to talk in Spanish without an accent if it was their second language. I know I stopped trying to pronounce it the proper way when speaking English because I roll my R and frankly, I don't care anymore. I will rather roll my R than try to break my tongue to make the correct R :)

What Howard doesn’t understand is that, Sophia’s first language is not English. Where as in Australia and Canada and all places where English is the first language it’s easy to adapt and American accent. And Sophia is unique cause of her exotic accent. Americans don’t realize how difficult it can be for some to mimic the American accent especially for Spanish speaking natives. It takes time and dedication to relearn how to articulate consonants and vowels in English and then mimic the intonation. I think the British accent is easier to mimic for a Spanish speaker. I feel for Sofia, but at this point I think her accent is her trade mark and at times it’s either exaggerated or she simply doesn’t care anymore. In any case, kudos to her. She is a great actress and entertainer and she is Colombian and that’s how Colombians sound like.

I will say two things first as many har pointed out Australian or British faking American accent is easier because it is the same native language. Second it is true too that some people has much better ear to catch up the melody behind a language and speak much closer to a foreign language than others. I am Colombian and I have lived in Norway 20 years. It still hurts when people pointed out how heavy is my accent. They don’t think I know it? sometimes I choose not to talk because is better to do not be criticized so often. To accept that people will never look at you in the same way you were look in your native language is not easy. Often they look at you as you are dumb.

She is a Caribbean girl. In the region we speak very fast. Spanish people often claimed they didn’t understand us Cubans when they visited Havana because we speak too fast. In Barranquilla where Sophia is from and The neighboring Cartagena they speak similar to Cubans and Puerto Ricans.

As an Australian it’s not fair to compare us with Spanish speakers. First of all we speak English so our enunciation for many sounds made by English words remains the same, and we have been exposed to American content from a young age (because we don’t have a strong Hollywood-like industry here) so it’s not too hard to pick it up. If I stayed in the US for may be 2 months I would probably pick the American accent very fast only because the language remains the same and it does not sound foreign to my ears.

It’s not the same from English to English accents than from a different language to an English accent. I speak Spanish, and I can change my accent in Spanish to other latin and Spain Spanish accent if I want, but I can’t do that in English. The same for English speakers, they can change their accent to other accent in the anglophone world, but when they speak Spanish, you can clearly hear the English accent.

It is not comparable, in Spanish there are only 5 vowel sounds, that is why it is so difficult for us to hear and differentiate the vowels in other languages.
